Who is this guide for?

People replacing a washing machine

You want to take repairability and reliability into account, while choosing a capacity, spin speed and energy consumption that suit your needs.

People choosing a dishwasher or vacuum cleaner

You want to look at the repairability criteria for the model you are considering, without overlooking the features you need for everyday use.

Households deciding whether to repair or replace

Your appliance has broken down, and you want to find out whether it can be repaired and whether the repair qualifies for the Repair Bonus before buying a replacement.

What to check before replacing an appliance

First, identify the appliance’s exact category. A model’s score is only useful when choosing once you have checked its detailed criteria and how well it suits your needs.

What matters What to check Who this is for
Washing machine durability Check the durability index for the exact model, including its repairability and reliability components. Compare capacities that suit your household. If I’m replacing my washing machine, I want to consider its reliability as well as how easy it is to repair; around 31% of consumers prioritise washing machine durability.
Dishwasher or vacuum cleaner repairability Confirm the model’s category, then check its repairability score and the criteria covering documentation, disassembly and spare parts. When choosing a dishwasher or vacuum cleaner, I want to understand the repair options before comparing features; around 31% of consumers put the repairability of these appliances first.
Repair or replace Check the warranty, whether the breakdown is eligible and whether you need to use an approved repairer before comparing the cost of a repair with a new appliance. If something breaks down, I’d rather know whether an eligible repair could let me keep my appliance; around 23% of consumers prioritise weighing up repair against replacement.
Category of another appliance Identify the exact product type and check which regulatory index, if any, applies to its category. If I’m considering another type of appliance, I want to know which information applies before interpreting a score; identifying the category is the priority for around 15% of consumers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Looking for a repairability index for a new washing machine

According to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, the durability index replaced the repairability index for household washing machines in France on 8 April 2025.

For the model you’re considering, check the durability index and look at its repairability and reliability components separately.

  • Treating the score as a promise of how long it will last

The indices bring together defined criteria; they don’t predict whether a particular appliance will break down or the outcome of a future repair.

Compare models that meet the same needs by looking at the detailed criteria, then consider their features and, where applicable, their energy label.

  • Replacing a broken appliance straight away

According to the Ministry of the Economy, eligibility for the Repair Bonus depends in part on the appliance not being covered by a warranty, the breakdown being eligible and the repair being carried out by an approved repairer.

First check your appliance’s warranty cover and the conditions that apply to its breakdown, then have the repair assessed before making a decision.

  • Assuming no index means a poor result

The categories covered by the indices don’t include every household appliance. So, the absence of an applicable index isn’t enough on its own to judge a model’s durability.

Check the exact regulatory category. If it isn’t covered by an index, compare the available information on spare parts, documentation and features that matter for your needs.

Frequently asked questions

Which index should I check for a new washing machine in France?

Check the durability index for the household washing machine. According to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, it has replaced the repairability index for this category since 8 April 2025. The score out of 10 combines repairability and reliability criteria; check the exact model reference before comparing appliances.

How can I check the criteria behind a score?

Look up the calculation parameters for the appliance’s exact model reference rather than relying on its overall score alone. For the durability index, ADEME says you can view the calculation details on France’s public data platform; also check the specific variant you’re considering.

Can I get the Repair Bonus before replacing my appliance?

You may be able to if the appliance and breakdown are eligible, the appliance is no longer covered by a warranty and the repair is carried out by an approved repairer, according to the Ministry of the Economy. Check the conditions for your appliance before deciding to replace it.

Does a high score guarantee that an appliance won’t break down?

No. A repairability or durability score summarises regulatory criteria; it doesn’t guarantee how long an individual appliance will last. Compare the detailed criteria and everyday features of models that meet your needs.
