Who is this choice for ?

DIYers tidying up after small jobs

To collect ordinary dust and small rubble, compare the hose, the right bag or filter and how easy the machine is to empty, rather than relying on a general claim about power. Which? and Kärcher France describe these uses for specific models.

People switching between water and debris

If you need to vacuum dry dirt and then small amounts of water, check that both uses are supported and follow the model’s instructions for the filter and bag. Bosch DIY France and Einhell France specify different set-ups depending on the model.

People looking after a patio or garden

For leaves, check the hose’s reach and diameter. A blower can gather them together before you collect them. Which? highlights the benefits of a wider tube and hose for leaves or small rubble.

What to check

What you need What to check Who it matters most to
Ordinary fine dust Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the filter and bag, and whether replacements are available. Identify the type of dust. After small jobs, I want to collect ordinary fine dust without confusing it with hazardous dust. Around 33 % of consumers prioritise this.
Small rubble and capacity Check which types of debris are permitted in the instructions, the hose diameter, tank capacity and available storage space. If I need to collect small rubble without emptying the tank repeatedly, I compare the hose and tank capacity. Around 25 % of consumers prioritise collecting larger volumes of debris.
Small amounts of water Check that the machine is explicitly designed to vacuum liquids, and follow the model’s instructions for the filter, bag and emptying procedure. If I also need to vacuum up small amounts of water, I want to know how to prepare the machine for this. Around 25 % of consumers put wet pick-up first.
Leaves and outdoor access Check whether the exact model has a blower, as well as the length of the cable and hose. For looking after a patio or garden, I want to gather leaves and reach the area that needs cleaning. Around 17 % of consumers prioritise outdoor cleaning.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming “fine dust” means every type of building dust

A bag designed for ordinary fine dust, or a wet and dry function, does not prove that the machine is suitable for toxic or carcinogenic dust.

Identify the material before choosing. If you suspect asbestos, don’t treat the residue as ordinary household waste.

  • Comparing tank capacity alone

The hose diameter also matters when collecting small rubble or leaves. A larger tank can be more cumbersome to move and store.

Compare the intended debris, hose, capacity you need and available space together.

A tank that’s too small may need emptying more often; one that’s too large can make storage difficult.

  • Thinking the blower collects leaves

The blower gathers leaves together, but doesn’t put them in the tank.

Choose this function to gather leaves outdoors, then make sure you collect them. Don’t use it to scatter dust from building work.

Gathering leaves together is no substitute for collecting them.

Brands to know for these uses

Kärcher

The WD range includes wet and dry vacuum cleaners. The WD 3 P V-19/4/20 is presented for dust, small rubble, small amounts of water and workshop jobs.

  • For this model, Kärcher France mentions a power tool socket and recommends a filter bag for fine dust on the relevant WD 3 to WD 6 models.
  • Kärcher says its WD vacuum cleaners are not suitable for directly vacuuming ash. This information applies to the models mentioned, not the whole brand.

Bosch DIY

The UniversalVac 15 is presented for dry and wet materials, DIY jobs and keeping accessories stored on the machine.

  • Bosch DIY France says the UniversalVac 15 has a cartridge that lets you switch between wet and dry vacuuming without changing the filter.
  • This model-specific feature doesn’t remove the need to follow the instructions, and it doesn’t demonstrate that the machine is suitable for hazardous dust.

Einhell

The French product page for the TC-VC 1812/1 S describes a wet and dry vacuum cleaner with a 12 l stainless steel tank and a blow-out connection, for use in a workshop or garage.

  • Einhell says this model comes with a foam filter for liquids, as well as a collection bag and a filter bag for dry dirt.
  • Compare the 12 l capacity, cable and available space with your needs. These specifications don’t describe the whole range.

Vacmaster

Cleva Europe lists Vacmaster among its brands. Joybuy France’s product page describes the VQ1220SC as a 20 l wet and dry vacuum cleaner with a tool socket and blower function.

  • The VQ1220SC specifications, including its 20 l tank, are as stated on the retailer’s product page.
  • This information is not an independent test or a check of every limitation in the instructions. Distinguish the VQ1220SC from the VQ1220PF.

Frequently asked questions

Can a wet and dry vacuum cleaner pick up any renovation waste ?

No: “wet and dry” doesn’t mean the machine is approved for every material. The INRS distinguishes, among other things, toxic and carcinogenic dust. If debris may contain asbestos, don’t treat it as ordinary household waste; find out how it should be handled.

Do you need to change the filter before vacuuming water ?

The procedure depends on the model. Bosch DIY France says the UniversalVac 15 has a wet and dry cartridge that doesn’t need changing, while Einhell France states that the TC-VC 1812/1 S comes with a foam filter for liquids. Follow the instructions for the model you choose and check how the bag should be set up.

Can you vacuum ash with a Kärcher WD ?

No. Kärcher says its WD wet and dry vacuum cleaners are not suitable for directly vacuuming ash. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for a machine designed for this purpose.

Does the blower replace vacuuming leaves ?

No: it gathers the leaves together but doesn’t collect them in the tank. Make sure you pick them up afterwards, and don’t use the blower to scatter dust from building work.
