Which households is it for ?

Busy households wanting espresso without technical steps

You make coffee frequently but prefer a compact, quick and easy-to-use machine to manually adjusting the extraction. Capsules and pods are the first options to compare once you have checked which consumables the machine accepts and how much they cost to use. UFC-Que Choisir distinguishes these machine families for this type of home use.

Coffee lovers who want to choose their coffee and take part in the preparation

You are happy to measure, tamp, rinse and descale in order to retain greater control over the coffee used and the extraction. A portafilter machine makes sense if this preparation time genuinely forms part of your routine.

Heavy coffee drinkers prepared to maintain a more complex machine

You make several coffees regularly and want to use coffee beans with automated preparation. A bean-to-cup machine may suit you if the available space, noise, initial investment and cleaning cycles are compatible with your household.

What to look for

Start with how often you prepare coffee and which drinks you serve, then compare the consumables, footprint and maintenance tasks you are prepared to take on.

Priority What to check Your needs
Simplicity and space Type of portioned preparation, actual dimensions, tank capacity and number of consecutive cups. I want to prepare espresso quickly without juggling lots of settings or taking up too much worktop space.
Running costs Type of capsule or pod accepted, beans or ground coffee, water filter, descaler and cleaning products required. I want to avoid a machine that is inexpensive to buy generating excessive recurring household costs later. UFC-Que Choisir says that capsules can increase the overall bill and that the calculation also depends on how often the machine is used.
Drinks and control Available drink sizes, whether you can use ground coffee or beans, available settings and any milk system. I am looking for a machine suited to the drinks I actually prepare : a short espresso, a longer coffee or a milky recipe.
Maintenance Descaling alerts, access to the coffee-grounds container and drip tray, cleaning the brewing unit, steam wand or milk system. I want a realistic rinsing, cleaning and descaling routine suited to the water in my home and the number of coffees prepared.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a capsule machine for its low price without calculating consumables

Capsule prices can push up running costs over the course of many coffees, and many machines remain tied to a specific capsule type. UFC-Que Choisir highlights this dependence on a particular consumable format.

Before buying, check the exact system accepted, the price and availability of the coffees you will actually drink, then factor these into how often you use the machine.

Also budget for the products needed for descaling.

  • Assuming a grinder is automatically economical

A grinder requires a larger initial investment, and its value depends on the number of coffees made, how long you use it and the maintenance consumables required. UFC-Que Choisir states that, in its comparison, the advertised cost per cup is two to three times lower than that of a pod espresso.

Choose this machine family if your consumption and willingness to maintain the machine make it a sensible option, rather than basing your decision solely on the price of coffee beans.

Depending on the model, maintenance may include filters, descaler and cleaning time.

  • Underestimating maintenance because the machine is automatic

Limescale can affect the circuits, nozzles, temperature and extraction pressure. Bean-to-cup machines also require the containers to be rinsed and, depending on the model, the brewing unit and milk system to be cleaned.

Compare the alerts, manual descaling steps, access to the containers and brewing unit, and milk-system cleaning if you prepare milky drinks.

Descaling, cleaning the containers and maintaining the milk system are tasks to build into your household routine.

  • Buying pods or capsules without confirming which consumables are accepted

Formats are not interchangeable as a matter of course : a commercial name or similar shape is not enough to prove compatibility. UFC-Que Choisir states that most brands accept only one type of capsule.

Check the product page and the manual for the exact model before stocking up on consumables.

Brand guide

Nespresso

In France, the Original range is presented for ristretto and espresso, while Vertuo covers formats from espresso to mug-sized drinks.

  • Nespresso offers several sizes and recipes across its Original and Vertuo systems.
  • Check the exact capsule ecosystem : according to UFC-Que Choisir, most machines accept only one type of capsule.
  • Descaling is still necessary and must follow the model’s instructions.

Philips SENSEO

In France, Philips is associated with SENSEO machines for soft pods and provides dedicated descaling instructions for them.

  • Philips support provides detailed descaling procedures with cycles and rinses.
  • Pod compatibility, capacity and features vary by model.
  • Check the product page and manual for the machine you are considering instead of inferring its specifications from the SENSEO name alone.

De’Longhi

The brand offers traditional portafilter espresso machines and automatic bean-to-cup models, with different maintenance procedures for each.

  • De’Longhi provides separate procedures for portafilter and grinder machines, with descaling alerts on Magnifica S.
  • The frequency and tasks depend on the model and water hardness.
  • The brand states that using products or methods not intended for the machine may cause faults not covered by its warranty.

JURA

JURA offers automatic speciality coffee machines with grinders, supported by maintenance programmes for coffee, water and, on some models, milk.

  • The brand offers guided procedures for routine maintenance.
  • JURA’s statements about maintenance are part of its own communications and do not allow the reliability of each model to be compared with that of a competitor.
  • Compare the alerts, filters, required products and milk system of the model you are considering.

Frequently asked questions

Can coffee capsules be sorted for recycling in France ?

Yes. For aluminium or plastic capsules, ADEME advises using the recycling bin, bag or container for paper and packaging. For paper capsules, check the material and the relevant local guidance, particularly for composting or food-waste collection.

How often should an espresso machine be descaled ?

There is no single schedule for every model. UFC-Que Choisir gives an average of descaling every two to three months, depending on water hardness and frequency of use ; for its traditional espresso machines, De’Longhi recommends monthly or every two months in very hard water, and every three to six months in soft water. Always prioritise your model’s alert and instructions.

Can you ignore the descaling alert or use vinegar ?

No : an alert means you should follow the procedure specified by the manufacturer. Nespresso warns that vinegar can damage the machine, while De’Longhi states that using an unsuitable descaler or incorrect procedure may cause faults not covered by its warranty.

What should you do with an old electric coffee machine when replacing it in France ?

A coffee machine falls under the waste electrical and electronic equipment collection scheme. In France, when buying an equivalent new appliance, the retailer must offer to take back the old equipment free of charge under the conditions set out in the Environmental Code, including for distance sales. Check the take-back arrangements when placing your order or arranging delivery.
