Runny nose, allergy attack, or just feeling under the weather? The paper tissue is that small square of softness that saves the day. Yet, faced with fully-stocked shelves, making the right choice can be difficult. From ply count to composition and format, every detail matters when hunting for the perfect tissue: one that won't irritate your nose or disintegrate at the first sign of use.
As the Head of Product Curation at Joybuy, my mission is to guide you. This buyer's guide gives you all the key insights to choose your tissues based on essential criteria: softness, strength, and intended use.
Before diving into our selection, let's review the key points that will help you find the ideal tissue for every situation.
The first criterion to examine closely is the number of layers, or plies, that make up the tissue. A standard model usually has two or three.
The skin on your face, especially around the nose, is particularly fragile. Frequent nose-blowing can quickly lead to irritation. For tissues for sensitive skin or baby tissues, it is therefore essential to opt for pure and gentle compositions.
Packaging is another point not to be underestimated.
Finally, the choice between scented tissues and unscented ones comes down to personal preference. If you have reactive skin or are sensitive to smells, an unscented version remains the safest choice.

1. What is the real difference between 3-ply and 4-ply tissues? The difference mainly comes down to strength and absorbency. A 4-ply tissue is much denser. It absorbs more and is far less likely to tear or fall apart when wet, making it more reliable for a heavy cold. A 3-ply tissue, on the other hand, offers an excellent compromise for everyday use, with generally sufficient softness.
2. Are tissues with lotion really suitable for sensitive skin? Generally, yes. The lotion leaves a very thin protective film on the skin to limit irritation from repeated friction. However, those with extremely sensitive skin or allergies to certain components (fragrances, preservatives, etc.) should check the ingredient list. For a baby tissue or if in doubt, a simple, lotion- and fragrance-free tissue made from high-quality pure cellulose wadding remains the safest bet.
3. Can you flush paper tissues down the toilet? No, this is a very bad idea. Unlike toilet paper, which is designed to dissolve quickly in water, tissues are treated to be more resistant, including to moisture. They are therefore likely to clog your pipes or public sewage systems. The only proper place for a used tissue is the bin.
