Who are these formats for?

For entertaining on Pancake Day

If you’re putting caramels out on the table for everyone to enjoy, a 300 to 450 g bag could save you opening several smaller packets. Carrefour and E.Leclerc both list products in this weight range. The number of portions you’ll get depends on your guests.

For preparing portions to hand out

If you’re giving sweets to guests or adding them to lunch boxes, distinguish between small caramels sold together, individually wrapped pieces and actual mini bags. The word ‘mini’ on its own doesn’t tell you how each portion is packaged.

For comparing labels

If ingredients or allergens matter to you, check the exact product before choosing a format. Nutritional values per 100 g also make it easier to compare bags of different weights. If there’s no Nutri-Score, you should still read the rest of the label.

What should you check before buying?

First decide whether you’ll serve the caramels in a shared bowl or as separate portions. The bag’s weight, the size of the sweets and their packaging each answer a different question.

What to consider What to check Who is it for?
Quantity to share Compare the net weight and type of caramel. Carrefour’s 300 g bags and E.Leclerc’s 450 g bags are two examples of quantities you could serve at the table. If I’m putting out a bowl of caramels after pancakes, I want a quantity that suits my guests and I’m happy to serve them myself. Around 40% of consumers would prioritise this kind of sharing.
Portions to hand out Look for clear wording that says the pieces are individually wrapped, come in mini bags or includes the number of bags. ‘Mini’ may only describe the size of the sweet. When I’m preparing lunch boxes or handing sweets to guests, I look for portions that are easy to give out individually. Around 30% of consumers would put this need for separate portions first.
Product label Check the ingredients, allergens and nutritional values per 100 g for the exact product. You can use the Nutri-Score if it appears on the packaging. Before choosing an assortment, I want to know what’s in it and be able to compare its nutritional information. Around 30% of consumers would make checking the label their top priority.

Common mix-ups to avoid

  • Expecting every bag to have a Nutri-Score

According to the DGCCRF, displaying the Nutri-Score is voluntary in France. Its absence doesn’t mean a caramel has a less favourable nutritional profile.

If it is shown, consider it alongside the nutritional information and ingredients list. To compare two products, check their values per 100 g.

  • Assuming a large bag or ‘minis’ means a multipack

A bag of sharing caramels doesn’t necessarily contain pre-portioned sweets. Conversely, an assortment of mini bags may include several types of confectionery rather than just caramels.

If you want to put a separate portion in each lunch box, check both that the sweets are individually packaged and exactly what’s in the assortment.

  • Assuming all caramels have the same ingredients

Recipes and assortments vary. E.Leclerc lists hazelnut and soya in its 450 g Confiseo assortment. An Auchan product listing for Werther's Original chocolate-coated caramels warns that it may contain hazelnut, almond and peanut.

If you have an allergy or need to avoid an ingredient, check the label on the product and format you plan to serve, including any ‘may contain’ warnings.

Brands to consider by format

Carambar

Carrefour lists several Carambar formats, including 200 g bags of mini soft caramels and a 320 g bag of caramels.

  • The mini format could be suitable for handing out smaller sweets.
  • ‘Mini’ doesn’t confirm that the sweets are individually wrapped. Minis Mix is a variety assortment, not a product made up exclusively of caramels.

Confiseo

E.Leclerc lists a 450 g bag of soft caramels in vanilla, coffee, hazelnut and chocolate flavours.

  • This weight could work well for serving from a shared bowl.
  • According to the E.Leclerc listing, the assortment contains hazelnut and soya. Check the ingredients for the people you’re serving.

Carrefour Original

Carrefour lists a 300 g bag of assorted caramels.

  • The net weight gives you a useful guide when planning how much to share at the table.
  • A sharing bag doesn’t necessarily mean the sweets come in separate wrappers.

Auchan

The Auchan products reviewed include 175 g fresh cream caramels and 200 g Guérande salt caramels.

  • These are two distinct recipes whose labels you can compare.
  • According to Auchan, the Guérande salt product contains 59 g of sugars and 0.8 g of salt per 100 g. These values don’t apply to the brand’s other caramels.

Werther's Original

Werther's Original bags feature in the caramel ranges listed by Auchan and Monoprix.

  • The range gives you different formats and recipes from the brand to compare.
  • Some products are chocolate-coated assortments. For the assortment listed by Auchan, check the warnings about tree nuts and peanuts in particular.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nutri-Score compulsory on caramels sold in France?

No. The DGCCRF says that displaying the Nutri-Score is voluntary in France. It is separate from the nutrition declaration required for pre-packed foods under the applicable rules. To compare caramels, check the nutritional information for the exact product, whether or not it has the logo.

How can I compare two bags of different weights?

Check the net weight to work out how much you’ll be serving, then compare the nutritional values per 100 g on the same basis. A smaller bag doesn’t, on its own, tell you what the caramels contain.

Are ‘mini’ caramels ready to put in a lunch box?

Not necessarily: ‘mini’ may refer to the size of the sweet without saying how it’s wrapped. If you want separate portions, look for clear wording that says the pieces are individually wrapped or come in mini bags, and check that the assortment contains the caramels you want.

Which allergens should I check in a caramel assortment?

Read the ingredients and any ‘may contain’ warnings on the label of the specific assortment. E.Leclerc’s listing for Confiseo 450 g mentions hazelnut and soya, among other ingredients. An Auchan listing for an assortment of chocolate-coated Werther's Original warns that it may contain hazelnut, almond and peanut. These details don’t apply to every product from these brands.
