Whether you're a budding artist, a fine arts student, or a passionate hobbyist, one thing is certain: the right tools make all the difference. But when faced with a maze of shapes, sizes, and bristle types, choosing the right paintbrush set can quickly become a headache. Our mission: to give you the keys to finding a versatile, high-quality kit that matches your technique (oil, acrylic, watercolour) and your budget.
To make the right choice, a few technical criteria need to be examined closely. These are what will dictate your brushes' performance once they're in your hand.
The type of bristle is crucial: it determines the brush's ability to hold paint (the "load"), as well as the mark it will leave on the canvas or paper.
A good beginner's kit should include several shapes to handle any situation.
Starting with a complete set is often the smartest move: it's more economical and much simpler. The paintbrush set with a carrying case is a must-have for students and artists on the go, as it protects the bristles during transport and helps keep your supplies organised.

A good habit: clean your brushes as soon as your session is over. For water-based paints (acrylic, gouache, watercolour), a little lukewarm water and mild soap will do the trick. For oil paints, a solvent is essential (turpentine or an odourless substitute), followed by a final rinse with soapy water. The final touch: reshape the bristles with your fingers and let them dry flat or, even better, hanging upside down to preserve the ferrule.
Natural bristles (like hog bristle or squirrel) have a scaled structure that gives them superior water and paint retention. This is why they are preferred for traditional techniques. Synthetic bristles (nylon, polyester), which are smoother, are less absorbent but much more resistant to wear and solvents. Easier to maintain, they offer very precise control, making them favourites for acrylic brushes.
That's a very bad idea! The solvents used for oil paint are very harsh and can destroy the delicate bristles of your watercolour brushes. Conversely, even a tiny residue of oil can "pollute" your water-based colours and ruin your washes. To ensure the longevity and performance of your materials, the golden rule is simple: one set of brushes per technique.
