Who are these formats for?

Anyone looking for a quick organic meal

You want a ready-prepared portion of rice to heat up for lunch or dinner, rather than a large bag of dry rice. The single-serve options featured by Auchan and Carrefour come in 220 to 250 g pouches.

Anyone checking the ingredients in a plant-based recipe

You’re looking for a meat-free recipe, but want to check the ingredients, including whether it contains soya, any listed allergens and how much salt it contains. An ‘organic’ label doesn’t replace checking the ingredients.

Anyone who prefers to put their own meal together

You want to save time preparing the rice while choosing your own vegetables, seasoning and other ingredients. A pouch of plain heat-and-eat rice meets a different need from a ready-cooked recipe.

What should you check before buying?

When shopping for organic rice, first work out whether you want ready-cooked rice, plain heat-and-eat rice or dry rice in cooking pouches. Then compare the preparation time, ingredients and instructions for storing an opened pouch.

What to consider What to check Who it matters to
Preparation and portion size Check the number of portions, net weight and preparation instructions: an express pouch can be reheated, while a pouch of dry rice needs cooking. When I’m short on time at lunch, I look for a portion I can heat up without having to cook the rice. Around 42% of consumers would put this need for speed and a single-serving portion first.
Recipe ingredients Read the ingredients and allergen information, then compare the nutritional details, particularly the salt per portion in ready meals. If I’m looking for a meat-free recipe or need to avoid a particular ingredient, what’s in it matters more than how quickly I can prepare it. Around 33% of consumers would prioritise this suitability for their dietary needs.
Customisation and leftovers Decide whether you’d rather season plain rice yourself or buy a prepared recipe. If you open a pouch and don’t finish it, follow its storage instructions. I prefer to choose what goes into my rice and think about whether I’ll be able to finish the rest after opening. For around 25% of consumers, having control over the meal and leftovers would be their main priority.

Common mix-ups to avoid

  • Assuming a single serving is a complete meal

A pouch might contain plain rice to serve with something else, or a recipe that already combines several ingredients. The Auchan examples include tomato rice, rice with soya and vegetables, and a chicken recipe.

Check what’s in the pouch and decide what else you’d like to have with your meal, rather than relying on the portion count alone.

  • Choosing a product just because it’s organic

Organic production alone doesn’t tell you whether a recipe contains meat or an allergen, or how much salt it contains. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, organic farming is governed by European regulations; you still need to check the ingredients of each product individually.

Read the ingredients, any listed allergens and the nutritional information for the product you’re buying.

  • Confusing express pouches with cooking pouches

The express pouches featured by Auchan and Carrefour are described as ready after one to two minutes of heating, depending on the product. The dry rice cooking pouches featured by Auchan take around 10 to 11 minutes to cook.

If you can’t cook the rice, check that the packaging clearly says it’s already prepared and follow the heating instructions.

  • Assuming every opened pouch keeps for the same length of time

Instructions vary by recipe: the guidance given for Céréal Bio, Jardin BiO étic and Bjorg doesn’t specify the same time after opening for each one.

Refrigerate an opened pouch and use it within the conditions and timeframe stated on its packaging.

Brands to consider

Céréal Bio

Auchan features a 220 g express pouch of organic Mediterranean-style ready-cooked rice, described as one portion.

  • The product details say it can be heated in the microwave or in a bain-marie.
  • The recipe warns that traces of allergens may be present and lists 0.98 g of salt per pouch. Check the label to make sure it suits your needs.

Jardin BiO étic

Auchan features a 220 g express pouch of organic rice with vegetables and chicken.

  • The recipe already includes chicken and vegetables, making it an option if you’re looking for this type of ready meal.
  • It isn’t suitable if you’re looking for a meat-free option. The label also warns that traces of gluten, soya and sesame may be present. Once opened, it should be kept chilled and used within two days.

Bjorg

Auchan features a 250 g express pouch of organic wholegrain rice with soya and vegetables.

  • The ingredients make it clear that this is a ready-prepared plant-based recipe, rather than a pouch of plain rice.
  • The recipe contains soya. Once opened, the instructions say to refrigerate it and use it within 48 hours.

Alnatura

Carrefour features a 250 g pouch of plain organic basmati rice, which is ready in two minutes.

  • With plain rice, you can choose what ingredients and seasoning to add.
  • You’ll need to provide the other parts of the meal. If the ingredients matter to you, check the list and nutritional information on the pack.

Frequently asked questions

How can you check whether ready-cooked rice is organic?

Check the organic claims and the EU organic logo on the packaging of the product you’re considering. The Ministry of Agriculture explains that organic farming is governed by European regulations; this label doesn’t replace checking the ingredients and allergens.

Is organic ready-cooked rice always meat-free and free from allergens?

No. Recipes contain different ingredients. The Jardin BiO étic rice featured by Auchan contains chicken, while the Bjorg recipe contains soya. Check the ingredients and allergen information on the exact product before choosing.

How long can you keep a pouch of rice after opening?

Follow the timeframe and storage instructions on the pouch you’ve bought: there isn’t one standard length of time for all these recipes. The guidance given for Jardin BiO étic and Bjorg is two days and 48 hours respectively when kept chilled after opening.

What’s the difference between a use-by date and a best-before date?

A use-by date should not be exceeded. A best-before date relates, among other things, to how long a product keeps its quality when the packaging is intact, according to the Directorate-General for Competition Policy, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control. In both cases, follow the product’s own instructions once it’s opened.

What should you look for on the label before buying a portion of ready-cooked rice?

Start with the product name, net quantity, ingredients and allergen information, then check the nutritional values and the date shown. The Directorate-General for Competition Policy, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control highlights the importance of the ingredients list, allergen information and nutrition declaration on prepacked foods.
