Who are these options for?

Party organisers who want to control the sugar

If you prefer to make the drink yourself and decide how much sugar to add, 100% cocoa gives you control over the sweetness. Check the pack for any possible traces, too.

Parents serving several children in a hurry

An organic instant mix means less preparation when it’s time to serve. However, compare the ingredients, sugar content and allergens before choosing a product.

Organisers who know about allergies

Ask parents or guardians about any dietary restrictions before you buy. Then check the allergens and any possible traces listed on the chosen powder’s packaging, as well as the ingredients you’ll add to the drink.

What should you check before the party?

Pure organic cocoa

Choose this if: you want to decide how much sugar to add to each drink.

Bear in mind: you’ll need to measure and mix the cocoa, liquid and, if you’re using it, sugar separately.

Organic instant mix

Choose this if: you’d rather use a pre-sweetened mix to serve several mugs.

Check: sugar is already part of the recipe, and the recommended amount determines how much powder goes into each mug.

Criterion What to check Who it matters to
Organic certification Look for the Euro-leaf logo and an indication that the ingredients are organic on the product you choose. Check the ingredients list, too. If serving a powder made from organically farmed ingredients matters to you, certification comes before choosing a recipe. Around 25% of consumers would put this first.
Allergens and traces Ask about any declared allergies, then check the pack for allergens and possible traces, as well as the liquid you plan to add. If any of the children coming to the party have declared allergies, deciding what they can safely be served is the first priority. Around 31% of consumers would put this first.
Sugar in the drink Compare the sugars per 100 g of powder, then check the amount used and the ingredients added to each mug. If you want to decide how much sugar to add, consider the whole recipe, not just the powder. Around 25% of consumers would prioritise controlling the sugar.
Speed of preparation Check the amount recommended per mug and the preparation instructions before planning how to serve everyone. When you need to serve several mugs at once, a ready-to-measure mix may be more convenient. Nearly 19% of consumers would prioritise this ease of serving.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming “organic” means “low in sugar”

Organic certification doesn’t determine the sugar content. Auchan’s product pages list 67 g of sugars per 100 g for its organic instant mix and 66 g per 100 g for Poulain Bio.

Compare the “of which sugars” figures on the same 100 g basis. Then consider how much powder you use and what else you add to the drink.

  • Overlooking allergy risks because milk isn’t a main ingredient

Product pages for several organic powders warn of possible traces, including milk, gluten, eggs, soya and nuts. The liquid used to make the drink matters, too.

Ask about declared allergies before the party and check the packaging of the product you’re actually using. If a child has an allergy, follow the guidance provided for them.

  • Assuming Nutri-Score labelling is compulsory

The DGCCRF describes Nutri-Score as a voluntary label in France. If it’s not shown, you should still check the nutritional information.

If comparable products display the logo, use it as an additional guide, and check the ingredients and nutrition declaration as well.

Organic brands to know

Auchan Bio

Auchan lists two distinct products: 100% cocoa organic low-fat cocoa powder and an organic instant mix containing at least 32% cocoa.

  • The pure cocoa product page lists 1.9 g of sugars per 100 g of powder; the instant mix lists 67 g per 100 g.
  • Both products warn of possible allergen traces, so check the packaging for the one you choose.

Carrefour Bio

Carrefour describes its product as organic low-fat cocoa powder made from 100% cocoa, in a 250 g pack.

  • This product lets you make a drink and measure out the added ingredients separately.
  • The product page warns of possible traces of gluten, milk, eggs, soya and nuts.

Ethiquable

Auchan’s product page features a 425 g Ethiquable organic instant mix containing at least 50% cocoa.

  • The preparation instructions recommend 1 to 3 teaspoons with milk.
  • The cocoa content alone doesn’t tell you how much sugar is in a prepared serving. Check the nutritional information and the pack’s serving instructions.

Poulain

The 350 g Poulain Bio product described by Auchan is a sweetened powder containing at least 34% cocoa.

  • Its product page gives the composition as 66% cane sugar and lists 66 g of sugars per 100 g of powder.
  • Check the potential allergens listed for this product before serving it to a group of children.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nutri-Score compulsory on drinking chocolate powder?

No. The DGCCRF says Nutri-Score is voluntary in France. For pre-packed foods, the nutrition declaration is the place to start when comparing, in particular, the sugars per 100 g of powder.

Is organic hot chocolate always lower in sugar?

No. Organic refers to the method of production, not the amount of sugar. According to Auchan’s product pages, its pure organic cocoa contains 1.9 g of sugars per 100 g of powder, compared with 67 g per 100 g for its organic instant mix and 66 g per 100 g for Poulain Bio. With pure cocoa, the amount of sugar you add depends on your recipe.

What should I check if a child coming to the party has an allergy?

Ask parents or guardians about allergies and any guidance before you buy. Then check the packaging of the powder you’ll actually serve and the ingredients you plan to add. Auchan’s product pages for the products mentioned warn of various possible traces, so an ingredients list that doesn’t include milk isn’t enough to confirm that a drink is suitable for a child with an allergy.

How can I tell if a powder comes from organic farming?

Look for the Euro-leaf logo and organic labelling on the product you choose, then check its ingredients list. The Ministry of Agriculture explains that organic production is covered by European regulations. This certification alone doesn’t tell you about the sugar content or allergens.
