Shopping online without nasty surprises: the essential checks

Shopping online lets you quickly compare products for the home, leisure, car, food and even skincare. But a well-presented product page isn't always enough to make the right choice. A flattering photo, a vague promise or a price that doesn't include essential accessories can hide significant drawbacks.

Before you hit 'add to basket', three pitfalls deserve extra attention:

  • Relying on a highlighted feature without checking its limits: top speed, battery life, compatibility or claimed capacity must be measured against how you'll actually use it.
  • Overlooking dimensions and connections: the diameter of a filter, a TV's VESA standard, plug type or overall size can make a product unusable.
  • Forgetting about safety and maintenance requirements: rechargeable batteries, food items, biocidal products and heavy appliances all need specific precautions.

What to check before buying online

1. Compatibility, dimensions and installation

For car tools, measure the part you need before ordering. The WORKPRO filter wrench shown here fits filters from 70 to 110 mm. That's far more useful than a vague claim of compatibility with "most vehicles".

The same caution applies to a television. Make sure you check:

  • the screen's diagonal size and weight;
  • the VESA standard, given in millimetres;
  • the type of wall and the wall plugs required;
  • the depth available behind the set.

A TV wall mount that works with a 65-inch screen doesn't automatically suit every TV of that size. The Samsung 65-inch model shown below uses a VESA 200 × 200 mm fixing, while the wall mount featured accepts formats including 200 × 200, 400 × 400 and 600 × 600 mm. You must check this match before buying.

2. Battery life, power and running costs

For electric children's toys, the recommended age never removes the need for adult supervision. The Neuleb vehicle runs on a 12 V rechargeable battery, offers three speed settings and claims a run time of over 60 minutes on its product page. Charging takes around 8 to 12 hours and must be done with the supplied charger, out of the child's reach.

For an electric yoghurt maker, power isn't the only thing to consider. Fermentation time, pot capacity, automatic shut-off and ease of cleaning will often make more difference day to day. The H.Koenig ELY70 comes with seven 160 ml pots, offers programming up to 15 hours and has dishwasher-safe pots.

3. Ingredients, labelling and precautions

For Asian snacks and original crisps, check the allergen list, salt content, whether sweeteners are present and the best-before date. Some products contain soya, wheat, sesame, milk or molluscs. Items containing aspartame must also carry the statutory warning for people with phenylketonuria.

For a hand sanitiser, check what the product is for, the concentration stated on the label and any hazard pictograms. The Mercurochrome sanitiser shown contains 48.7 % ethanol by mass and is flammable. Use it only as directed on the label, away from naked flames and avoiding contact with eyes.

Finally, Korean skincare products that contain acids – such as certain lactic acid and salicylic acid pads – require you to read the ingredient list carefully. Testing on a small area and stopping immediately if irritation occurs are sensible precautions. These products are not a substitute for medical advice.

Frequently asked questions before buying online

How can I check whether a product is compatible with my setup?

Note down the measurements given in your appliance or vehicle manual, then compare them with those on the product page. For a TV wall mount, check the VESA standard, the maximum supported weight and the type of wall. For a car tool, measure the part you need to replace before making your choice.

What does using a rechargeable or electric appliance really cost?

Add up the purchase price, electricity consumption, any necessary accessories and maintenance costs. A programmable yoghurt maker can reduce the amount of handling, while a battery-powered toy means you have to follow the charging cycles and storage conditions. Consumption will mainly depend on how long and how often you use it.

How should I store food and skincare products ordered online?

When you receive them, check the packaging condition, the date shown and the storage instructions. Original crisps and Asian snacks should generally be kept in a cool, dry place. After opening, some foods need to go in the fridge. For Korean skincare products, close the container carefully and follow the storage instructions on the packaging.
