Which choice is right for you?

Hosts who pay attention to ingredients

If you’re bringing confectionery to share, check the ingredients and allergens for the exact product, especially if one of your guests has an allergy. For relevant prepacked foods, check the nutrition declaration too.

Shoppers looking for a chocolate and nougat gift

If you want to give both types of confectionery in one selection, look for a product name that explicitly mentions both. The word ‘selection’ alone doesn’t tell you what’s inside.

Shoppers looking for something to share

If quantity matters for your evening, compare the net weight of the options you’re considering with the number of people who’ll be sharing the confectionery.

What should you check before choosing?

For a charcuterie night, first decide what you’re looking for — chocolates and nougat, or nougat on its own — then check the label and size of the product you choose.

What mattersWhat to checkWho is this for?
Ingredients and labelling Ingredients list and allergens for the exact product; nutrition information per 100 g where a declaration is required. If one of my guests has an allergy, I need to be able to check what’s in the gift box before serving it. Around 42% of consumers put ingredients and labelling at the top of their list of concerns.
What’s in the selection Explicit mention of chocolates and nougat, or of the types of nougat you’re looking for. If I’m also giving chocolate, I don’t want to come away with a bag of nougat alone; around 33% of consumers say this specific choice of gift is their priority.
Size for sharing Net weight and the quantity you need for the number of guests. When several people are sharing the confectionery, I first check whether the size suits the occasion. Quantity is the priority for around 25% of consumers.

Common misconceptions to avoid

  • Ruling out a gift box because it has no Nutri-Score

According to the DGCCRF, Nutri-Score is voluntary in France, so the absence of the logo doesn’t mean that a product is non-compliant. A nutrition declaration is a separate requirement for relevant prepacked foods.

If a Nutri-Score is shown, consider it alongside the nutrition information per 100 g and the ingredients list, rather than using it as your only deciding factor.

  • Assuming every selection contains chocolate

Product names listed at Carrefour include both a mix of chocolates and nougat, and selections of nougat alone. None of these names is enough to confirm that a product is suitable for someone with an allergy.

Choose a product name that confirms it contains the confectionery you want, then check the ingredients and allergens on the packaging of the exact product.

Brands to know

Chabert & Guillot

Carrefour lists a selection of chocolates and soft Montélimar nougat in a 250 g metal tin.

  • The product name confirms that the selection contains both types of confectionery.
  • Check the ingredients, allergens and nutrition information for the tin you choose before giving it as a gift.

Le Roy René

Carrefour lists a 200 g bag containing white and black nougat.

  • Both types of nougat are named in the product title.
  • Don’t choose it for its chocolate content without checking the ingredients; check the allergens on the exact bag too.

Maison Jonquier

Carrefour lists a 200 g bag of assorted nougat.

  • The net weight makes it easy to compare with other sizes you’re considering for sharing.
  • Check the varieties, ingredients and allergens before choosing it for a specific gift.

A nougat option on Joybuy

For an evening when you want to share nougat, this Joybuy selection features 250 g of soft nougat.

Ong Xen Vietnamese soft nougat, 250 g

Consider this if you’d like to share nougat rather than give a selection of chocolates and nougat. Before serving, check the packaging for information about peanuts, sesame and possible traces of cereals containing gluten. Its firm, sticky texture calls for particular care around young children and older people because of the risk of choking.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nutri-Score compulsory on a box of chocolates or nougat in France?

No. The DGCCRF states that Nutri-Score is voluntary. The nutrition declaration is separate: it has been compulsory for relevant prepacked foods since 13 December 2016.

What should you check if a guest has an allergy?

Read the ingredients list and allergen information on the packaging of the exact gift box. European rules require allergen information for prepacked foods; a brand or product name alone isn’t enough to determine whether it’s suitable.

Is a good Nutri-Score enough to choose a gift box?

No. If a Nutri-Score is shown, you can take it into account, but also check the nutrition information per 100 g, ingredients and allergens for the product you’re planning to give.
