Which option is right for you?
Start by considering how much space you have. Then compare the drying capacity and installation requirements to narrow down your options.
Space for just one appliance
A washer-dryer combines both functions in one appliance. It’s a good fit if its drying capacity is enough for your usual loads, or if you can take some of the washing out after the wash cycle. UFC-Que Choisir points out that drying capacity is lower than washing capacity.
Room for two appliances, side by side or stacked
A separate heat pump tumble dryer lets you dry clothes without an external vent, according to UFC-Que Choisir’s guide to condenser dryers. If you’re planning to stack the appliances, check that they’re compatible and can be installed safely. UFC-Que Choisir advises placing the tumble dryer on top of the washing machine, not the other way round.
A listing for a conventional condenser dryer
This technology doesn’t require an external vent, but a listing won’t necessarily tell you when the appliance was first placed on the market. According to the European Commission, only heat pump tumble dryers can be newly placed on the EU market from 1 July 2025. Ask the seller to clarify the status of the model on offer.
What should you check before choosing?
Start with the available space and the size of the load you need to dry. Then compare cycle times, energy and water use, and noise for the cycles you’ll use.
Heat pump tumble dryer
Consider this if: you have space for a separate appliance and no external vent.
Bear in mind: you’ll need a dedicated space or a compatible stacking setup, with the clearances specified in the manual.
Washer-dryer
Consider this if: you only have floor space for one appliance and your loads are within its drying capacity.
The trade-off: after a full wash load, you may need to take some clothes out before starting the drying cycle, as UFC-Que Choisir explains.
Conventional condenser dryer
Check carefully: if a listing is for an appliance whose status and date of first placement on the market the seller can confirm.
Worth noting: the EU rule in force since 1 July 2025 for newly marketed tumble dryers limits this option if you’re buying new.
| Factor |
What to check |
Consider your needs |
| Installation |
Measure the height, width and depth, then check the door opening, connections and clearances specified in the manual. If you’re stacking the appliances, make sure they’re compatible. |
I only have a cupboard or one floor space available: depth and access to the door matter just as much as width. |
| Drying capacity |
For a washer-dryer, check the washing capacity separately from the wash-and-dry capacity. UFC-Que Choisir notes that the latter is lower. For example, Bosch lists the WNG24402FR as having a 9 kg washing capacity and a 6 kg wash-and-dry capacity. |
If I wash a full load, can I dry it all in one go, or will I need to take some of it out? |
| Cycle times |
Compare the cycle time for the programme and a load size that match your needs. Also check the load size and fabrics allowed for any quick programme. |
If I do laundry often, I want to know how long the appliance will be in use, especially if I plan to wash and dry without transferring the clothes. |
| Electricity and water |
For tumble dryers with the new energy label, Gifam gives electricity use in kWh per 100 cycles of the eco programme. For a washer-dryer, check the water and electricity figures separately for the cycle you’re interested in. |
If I dry clothes often, I want to compare like-for-like cycles rather than relying on the stated capacity alone. |
| Noise |
Check the stated noise level for each model and which cycle it relates to. UFC-Que Choisir’s washer-dryer tests assess noise at different stages, including drying. |
If the appliance is near a living space, I’ll take account of the noise during the stages when it’ll be running in my home. |
Which branded models can you use as a guide?
These examples show the features of specific models. They don’t represent every model from each brand or confirm that the models are available on Joybuy.
Bosch
Two Bosch France product listings show the difference between a separate tumble dryer and a washer-dryer.
- According to Bosch France, the WQG24502FR heat pump tumble dryer has an 8 kg capacity and measures 842 × 598 × 613 mm.
- The WNG24402FR washer-dryer is listed with a 9 kg washing capacity but a 6 kg wash-and-dry capacity, so the load must be within the latter limit when you dry it.
Vedette
The SLV38C is an example of a conventional condenser tumble dryer listed by E.Leclerc.
- The E.Leclerc listing gives this model an 8 kg capacity and a stated noise level of 69 dB.
- If you’re considering buying one, ask the seller to confirm when it was first placed on the market and its status under the EU rule in force since 1 July 2025.
AEG
The L9WSB162C is an example of a heat pump washer-dryer, featured in an archived UFC-Que Choisir test listing.
- The listing gives this specific model a 10 kg washing capacity and a 6 kg drying capacity.
- UFC-Que Choisir notes that the L9WSB162C is no longer sold, so its specifications shouldn’t be assumed to apply to another AEG model.

Frequently asked questions
Does a condenser tumble dryer need an external vent?
No. A condenser tumble dryer, including a heat pump model, doesn’t need an air vent to the outside, as UFC-Que Choisir explains. However, check the manual for the model’s clearances, installation requirements and instructions for handling condensed water.
Can you wash 9 kg and then dry it all in a 9/6 kg washer-dryer?
No, not in a wash-and-dry cycle designed for 6 kg. Bosch lists the WNG24402FR as having a 9 kg washing capacity and a 6 kg wash-and-dry capacity. After washing 9 kg, you’ll need to take some of the load out and dry it separately.
Can you stack a tumble dryer on top of a washing machine?
Yes, if both appliances and their installation are suitable for stacking. UFC-Que Choisir specifies that the tumble dryer must go on top of the washing machine, never the other way round. Check the manuals before planning the stack and the space needed to access it.
How can you compare the energy use of two tumble dryers?
Compare the appliances using the same cycle and energy-label information. Gifam says that the new tumble dryer energy label shows electricity use in kWh per 100 cycles of the eco programme, as well as the programme duration. Also check the corresponding capacity to see whether the cycle suits your loads.
What should you check if a listing says a conventional condenser dryer is new?
Ask when the appliance was first placed on the market and confirm the status of the item being sold. According to the European Commission, only heat pump tumble dryers can be newly placed on the EU market from 1 July 2025. The listing alone won’t tell you when the appliance on offer was placed on the market.
