What should you check before choosing?
Start by measuring the space and checking the room needed to open the machine. Then compare the features that matter in everyday use. A model that fits the available width could still obstruct a walkway or make it difficult to reach your washing.
| What to consider |
What to check |
What I need |
| Dimensions |
Compare the model’s dimensions with the available width, depth and height. Allow room to access the connections too, and check the installation diagram. |
If width is my main obstacle, I’ll consider a top-loader. If it’s depth, a slim front-loader may work if it fits the available width. |
| Opening |
Check the clearance above a top-loader or the space in front of a front-loader’s door. Make sure a door, shelf or worktop won’t get in the way when you load the machine. |
I want to load the washing without blocking the walkway or having to move things around the machine. |
| Capacity |
Compare the stated capacity with your usual laundry loads and the dimensions of each appliance. The models mentioned here have different capacities, but the number of kilograms alone shouldn’t determine your choice. |
The machine needs to handle my household’s usual laundry loads and fit the space available. |
| Noise |
Compare the stated spin noise levels in dB(A) using product specifications that report the same measurement. Follow the instructions for installation and levelling too; the figure alone won’t predict the vibrations you’ll feel. |
If the machine is near a living area, I want to compare specific models rather than rely on a promise of quiet operation. |
| Durability |
Consider the model’s durability index alongside its everyday features. According to the French ministry responsible for ecology, this index has replaced the repairability index for washing machines in France since 8 April 2025. |
I want to consider reliability and repairability without overlooking the dimensions or access to the washing. |
| Bathroom installation |
Have the location and electrical circuit checked before buying. Promotelec advises taking into account the zones around the bath or shower, earthing and a 30 mA residual-current device. When assessing the location, wardrobe doors are considered open. |
If the machine is going in my bathroom, I want to make sure it can be installed safely there before choosing its dimensions. |
A guide to brands and their models
These models give you examples of formats and features to compare; they don’t represent every washing machine made by each brand.
Whirlpool
The TW621CSSENSEWASHFR top-loader is an example of a narrow appliance.
- Whirlpool lists this model as 40 cm wide, with a 6 kg capacity and a spin noise level of 76 dB.
- The brand describes a feature that stops the drum in an upright position, as well as a soft-opening lid. Still, check the instructions to see how much overhead clearance the lid needs.
Beko
The BTL1WFP10652FR top-loader lets you consider a 6.5 kg capacity in a format that’s 40 cm wide.
- Beko lists dimensions of 40 × 60 × 90 cm and a spin noise level of 78 dB(A) for this model.
- Check the clearance above the lid and compare the stated noise level with those of the other models you’re considering.
Electrolux
The EW6T5137AG top-loader is a 7 kg model to consider if that capacity suits your household’s laundry loads.
- Electrolux says its SensiCare feature adjusts the cycle length to suit the weight of the load.
- This feature doesn’t remove the need to check the dimensions, lid clearance and noise level of the model you choose.
Bosch
The WGE03207FR front-loader is a useful comparison if there’s enough width and clearance in front of the appliance for a door.
- Bosch lists an 8 kg capacity and a maximum spin speed of 1,200 rpm for this model.
- Check its installation dimensions and make sure the door can open before deciding whether it will fit in a narrow room.
Haier
The THASN466TM5-S top-loader is another 6 kg model to compare for size.
- Haier lists dimensions of 405 × 600 × 860 mm and a spin speed of 1,400 rpm for this model.
- Haier’s description of Night & Day mode alone doesn’t tell you how noisy the machine will seem in your room. Check the model’s specifications and installation instructions.
A top-loading washing machine option on Joybuy
This top-loading model is an option to consider if width is a key concern in your room. Check its dimensions and make sure the lid can open in your chosen location. It isn’t a front-loader like the models mentioned above.

Candy TCA464TM4-S ProWash 500, 6 kg top-loading washing machine
Loading from the top may appeal if you’d rather not bend down in front of a door. The model name indicates a 6 kg capacity, a spin speed of 1,400 rpm, a B energy rating, an Inverter motor, Wi-Fi and 17 programmes. Before choosing it for a narrow room, check its installation dimensions and the clearance needed to open the lid.

Frequently asked questions
Is a top-loading washing machine always suitable for a narrow room?
No. It may work if width is limited, but you’ll also need room for its depth and to lift the lid. If depth is the main obstacle, consider a slim front-loader, while leaving enough space in front of the door.
How much clearance do I need to open the machine?
Leave space in front of a front-loader’s door or above a top-loader’s lid. The clearance required depends on the model and its surroundings, so compare your measurements with the installation diagram before buying.
Can you install a washing machine in a bathroom?
Check the location and electrical circuit before installation. In France, Promotelec advises that the machine should be earthed, protected by a 30 mA residual-current device and positioned outside zone 2. If it’s in a cupboard, assess the zones with the doors open. Have the specific situation checked if the machine is near a bath or shower.
Can the decibel rating predict vibrations?
No. The stated noise level can help you compare models on a like-for-like basis, but it doesn’t tell you on its own how much vibration you’ll feel at home. You should also follow the instructions for installation and levelling.
Which index should you check for a new washing machine in France?
Check the durability index. According to the French ministry responsible for ecology, it has replaced the repairability index for washing machines since 8 April 2025. It provides information about reliability and repairability, but you should still check the dimensions, noise level and installation requirements.
