What to look for when preparing meals with minimal supervision
Start with the types of dishes you prepare, then compare the genuinely usable capacity, cleaning requirements and available space.

What to check |
Your needs |
| Cooking with minimal supervision |
Compare the programmes, time and temperature settings, keep-warm function and delayed start, where available. Pressure cooking is not available on a conventional slow cooker or rice cooker. |
I want to be able to start dinner and then get on with something else. In August 2024, 61% of the 1,020 adults surveyed in France by OpinionWay for Lustucru said they spent 30 minutes or less preparing dinner on a weekday evening. |
| Usable capacity |
Check the usable capacity or filling limits in the manual and recipes. Read the portion guidance in the context of the dish being prepared: rice, soup, dishes with sauce and steamed food cannot be compared directly. |
I want to avoid a bowl that is too small for my meals without buying a capacity I will not use. The nominal capacity alone does not determine the number of portions. |
| Maintenance |
Check the bowl, lid, steaming basket and other accessories separately for dishwasher compatibility. A removable bowl and included accessories can also reduce the amount of handling required. |
After frequent use, I prefer cleaning not to create extra washing-up or require multiple transfers between containers. |
| Space and functions |
Measure the appliance with its bowl or lid in place, as well as the available height beneath cupboards. Choose chopping, blending or kneading functions only if they form part of your usual meals. |
I want to keep my worktop usable and avoid paying for versatility that would go unused. |

Frequently asked questions
Does a bowl advertised as 6 L always allow you to prepare 6 L of food?
No. The nominal capacity refers to the bowl, but the permitted volume depends on the safety margin and the recipe. Que Choisir Ensemble gives the example of a 6 L Cookeo limited to a maximum cooking capacity of 4 L: check the manual and the limits for the programme being used.
What should you check to make cleaning easier?
Check the bowl, lid, steaming basket and accessories separately. Their dishwasher compatibility may vary from one part to another, even on the same appliance.
Is a cooking food processor necessarily better suited to a family?
No. It adds functions such as chopping, blending and kneading, but the usable capacity may be lower than the bowl’s nominal capacity. The Cook Expert Connect reviewed by Magimix states a usable capacity of 2.5 L for a 3.5 L bowl: base your choice on the quantities you prepare and the steps you actually need.
How should you dispose of an electrical appliance at the end of its life in France?
A multicooker, slow cooker, rice cooker or cooking food processor falls under the waste electrical and electronic equipment stream. France’s Ministry for Ecological Transition states that a collection and recycling system exists for household WEEE in France; use a suitable collection point.
