Which appliance suits each need?

For dishes cooked in a pot

If you mainly cook soups, slow-cooked dishes or steamed food, a multicooker can bring several of these tasks together. Moulinex’s Cookeo models include pressure cooking and steaming; for a crispy finish, check which model you’re considering and whether you’ll need an additional accessory.

For roasting or browning in a limited space

A basket-style air fryer is suited to hot-air cooking, while a mini oven lets you cook on a rack or baking tray. The models shown by Philips and Tefal come in different formats, so check the usable size of each basket or the oven cavity before you choose.

For less washing-up after cooking

Saving space matters less if every meal leaves you with lots of parts to wash. Check whether each part—the pot, baskets and trays—is dishwasher-safe. Moulinex and Philips list these specifications for specific models.

What should you look for first?

Start with the cooking tasks you do most often, then see how they fit with the space you have and the portions you prepare. Keeping two small appliances may still be more practical if a pot and a rack meet different needs that one model can’t cover.

Multicooker

Worth considering: for pressure cooking, steaming and slow-cooked dishes prepared in a pot.

Bear in mind: you may need a separate accessory for crispy cooking. Moulinex says the Extra Crisp accessory for the Cookeo Wi-Fi 9-en-1 is sold separately.

Air fryer

Worth considering: for hot-air cooking, particularly if two baskets let you cook a main and a side separately.

Bear in mind: the total capacity doesn’t tell you what size dish will fit in each basket.

Mini oven

Worth considering: if you mainly use a rack or tray for toasting, reheating or cooking flat dishes.

Bear in mind: sizes vary considerably. Tefal’s models range from a toaster and mini oven to a 39 L countertop oven.

Small specialist appliances

Worth considering: if your usual cooking requires both a pot and a rack, and none of the appliances you’re considering can handle both suitably.

Bear in mind: you’ll need room to store and clean several appliances.

What to consider What to check Who is it for?
Cooking in a pot Whether the model offers pressure cooking, steaming or slow cooking, and whether its capacity suits your portions. If I mainly make slow-cooked dishes and want to set the cooking programme, combining these tasks in one pot matters more to me than browning. Around 30% of consumers are said to prioritise cooking in a pot.
Roasting and browning Cooking modes and the usable size of the baskets, rack or tray. To brown a main and a side, I look for a cooking method that suits each one. These cooking methods are said to be the priority for around 30% of consumers.
Space and portions External dimensions, clearance for the door or drawers, and the size of dishes the appliance can accommodate. When my worktop is narrow, I want to be able to open the appliance without having to reduce my usual portion sizes. Around 20% of consumers are said to make their choice mainly according to available space and the amount of food they prepare.
Cleaning Which accessories are included and exactly which parts are listed as dishwasher-safe. If several parts need washing after every meal, I’m less interested in combining functions. Ease of cleaning is said to come first for around 20% of consumers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming ‘multi-function’ means ‘for every meal’

A multicooker, air fryer and mini oven don’t offer the same modes. A pot designed for slow cooking won’t necessarily meet your needs for toasting or browning.

Make a note of the cooking tasks you do most often, then check the mode, portion size and suitable dish for each one.

For the Cookeo Wi-Fi 9-en-1, Moulinex says the Extra Crisp accessory required for air-frying is sold separately.

  • Comparing litres alone

The stated capacity doesn’t tell you how much room there is for a dish or how much space the appliance takes up when its door or drawers are open.

Measure the space available and compare it with the appliance’s external dimensions, then check the usable dimensions against the dishes you usually cook.

  • Assuming all accessories are dishwasher-safe

Any dishwasher-safe claim from Moulinex or Philips applies to certain pots, baskets or trays, depending on the model.

Check the manual to see which parts are included and how to clean them. Don’t assume that removable parts include the electrical base.

  • Forgetting about your old appliance

In France, household appliances are covered by the collection scheme for waste electrical and electronic equipment, as outlined by the ministry responsible for ecological transition.

Before replacing an appliance, find out whether your retailer offers take-back when you buy a similar item, or where your nearest suitable collection point is.

Brands to consider for different needs

Moulinex

Moulinex’s Cookeo models are primarily designed for cooking in a pot, with stated capacities of 3 L and 6 L, depending on the model.

  • The specifications for the models mentioned include pressure cooking, steaming and parts listed as dishwasher-safe.
  • According to Moulinex, hot-air cooking with the Cookeo Wi-Fi 9-en-1 requires the Extra Crisp accessory, which is sold separately.

Philips

The Philips air fryers featured here include dual-basket models designed to cook different foods separately using hot air.

  • Philips describes synchronised cooking for its dual-basket range.
  • Steam functions, basket dimensions and cleaning features vary by model, so check the exact product reference.

Tefal

The Tefal appliances featured here meet different needs, from toasting to cooking on a rack or in a countertop oven.

  • Tefal’s Toast’n Grill is designed for toasting, reheating and cooking certain flat dishes, while its 39 L XL Cook is designed to cook two dishes at once.
  • These two formats differ in both capacity and the space they take up, so measure your available space before choosing.

Magimix

The Cook Expert Connect combines food preparation and cooking for anyone looking to bring these tasks together.

  • Magimix states that the Original model has a usable capacity of 2.5 L.
  • Its stated weight of 11,14 kg makes it worth checking whether you have a permanent spot for it on your worktop, rather than assuming it’ll be easy to move.

Frequently asked questions

Can a multicooker replace a microwave or an oven?

It can handle some reheating and cooking tasks, but not necessarily everything these appliances do. The pot-based functions described by Moulinex differ from the rack-based cooking options presented by Tefal. Check your recipes and the functions of the model you’re considering before getting rid of an appliance.

How should I compare capacities in litres?

First compare what each cooking space can hold, then look at its volume: a pot, a basket and an oven cavity are all shaped differently. Check the usable dimensions against your dishes or ingredients, the portions you plan to cook and the appliance’s external dimensions.

Are all the parts of a multi-function appliance dishwasher-safe?

No. This only applies to specific parts and models. Moulinex lists the pot and steam basket as dishwasher-safe on one 6 L Cookeo model; Philips gives the same guidance for removable parts of its Double Basket 3000 Series. Check the manual for your exact model and never put the electrical base in the dishwasher.

What should I do with an old appliance in France?

Take it to a collection scheme for electrical and electronic equipment rather than putting it in your household rubbish. The ministry responsible for ecological transition also outlines in-store take-back options. Ask the retailer which conditions apply to your purchase.
