What to compare
For a multi-storey home, start with what makes cleaning most difficult: carrying the appliance, finishing a cleaning session, storing it on each floor or automating cleaning on accessible floors.
| What matters |
What to check |
Who it matters most to |
| Stairs and carrying |
Weight in the configuration you’ll carry; handle and nozzle suited to steps. |
If I often carry the appliance between floors, I check how heavy it feels in my hand and whether the tools are suitable for reaching the steps. Carrying is the top priority for around 36 % of consumers furnishing a multi-storey home. |
| Coverage in one session |
Battery life with the intended brush and mode; accessible sockets and the reach of a cylinder vacuum. |
If I want to clean several floors in one go, I compare real-world battery life or cable reach with the location of the sockets. Cleaning without interruption is the top priority for around 29 % of consumers in this situation. |
| Storage on each floor |
Space for the appliance; room for charging or storing the cable and consumables. |
If there’s room for an appliance on each floor, keeping one close to hand can save trips up and down. I also check that there’s enough space and consider the upkeep of several units. This arrangement is the top priority for around 21 % of consumers. |
| Automated floor cleaning |
Multi-storey mapping and cliff detection on the specific model; a manual solution for the stairs. |
If accessible floors make up most of my cleaning, a robot can automate some of the work, but it won’t climb the stairs. Automating floor cleaning is the top priority for around 14 % of consumers. |

Frequently asked questions
Can a robot clean every floor and the stairs on its own ?
It can’t clean the stairs: a robot won’t climb them. If you have a model that supports multiple maps, you’ll need to move it between floors. Check that the specific model also has cliff detection.
Do you need to move a robot’s dock to each floor ?
Not necessarily. For the models covered by its multi-map instructions, Roborock Support Center says to move the robot on its own after creating the maps. Check your model’s manual before using this method.
What should I compare to reduce the upkeep of several appliances ?
Compare the dust containers or bags that need emptying or replacing, how easy the filters are to access, and the batteries and parts compatible with each model. France’s repairability index provides information on how repairable different categories of vacuum cleaners are; it doesn’t tell you how well they can clean stairs.
What legal protection applies when buying a vacuum cleaner from a business in France ?
The legal guarantee of conformity applies to new, second-hand and refurbished goods sold by a business to a private individual, subject to the legal conditions. The Ministry of the Economy distinguishes this mandatory guarantee from an optional commercial warranty.
Which index should I look for on a vacuum cleaner sold in France ?
According to the DGCCRF, the repairability index applies in particular to corded and cordless battery-powered household vacuum cleaners, as well as robot vacuum cleaners. As of October 2026, the Ministry of the Economy says the durability index covers certain other categories, including televisions and washing machines. Don’t confuse it with the index that applies to vacuum cleaners.
