Buying priorities
Start with the recipes you usually make, then check the genuinely usable capacity, the space available and which tasks you still want to handle yourself.
| Priority |
What to check |
Your needs |
| Cooking with minimal intervention |
Programmes compatible with your recipes; time and temperature settings; keep-warm function where provided by the model. |
I want to be able to start a compatible recipe and then get on with something else while it cooks, without having to serve it immediately afterwards. |
| Usable capacity |
Maximum volume permitted for each mode; fill line; stated portions and restrictions for pressure-cooked recipes. |
My portions need to fit in the pot with the necessary safety margins, without choosing an oversized appliance for my usual meals. |
| Preparation or cooking only |
Chopping, blending, weighing or kneading functions; sauté function; stirring steps still required by your recipes. |
If I often prepare ingredients, I can consider a cooking robot. If I mainly need to cook, I would rather avoid functions I am unlikely to use. |
| Cleaning and size |
Exact parts that are dishwasher-safe; dimensions and weight; number of lids and accessories to store. |
The appliance must be easy to keep within reach or store, without becoming too awkward to move after every meal. |

Frequently asked questions
Can you leave the house completely while a multi-cooker is cooking?
No, not as a general safety rule. A multi-cooker reduces the need for intervention during a programmed cooking cycle, but it must be placed on a stable, dry, heat-resistant surface; follow the fill lines and the model's manual. For pressure appliances, the manufacturer's instructions take priority over the idea of cooking completely unattended.
How do you choose the right pot capacity?
Start with your usual portion sizes and the type of dishes you make, then check the permitted volume in the manual. A nominal 6 L pot does not necessarily let you prepare 6 L: Que Choisir states that a 6 L Cookeo may be limited to 4 L depending on the recipes and safety margins.
Can a programmable slow cooker replace a pressure multi-cooker?
Not necessarily. A programmable slow cooker is suitable for planned, gentle cooking; Crock-Pot states that the TimeSelect can programme mealtimes and keep food warm. A pressure multi-cooker adds modes such as pressure cooking, sautéing and steaming, which are useful if you also want to brown food or vary your cooking methods in the same pot.
Is a cooking robot useful if I already own a multi-cooker?
It is most useful if you regularly spend time chopping, blending, weighing, mixing or kneading. If you only need to automate cooking and already have a suitable food-preparation appliance, take stock of your existing equipment before adding another appliance and its accessories.
Can the French repairability index be used to compare multi-cookers?
Not generally. In its list of categories covered, published in January 2026, the French ministry responsible for ecological transition cites smartphones, laptops, electric lawnmowers, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners and pressure washers, but does not include multi-cookers. For this type of appliance, check the manuals, access to spare parts and the repair solutions offered by the brand instead.
