Who is this choice for?

A student who prioritises certification

You’re looking for wild-caught fish with the MSC label, rather than a general promise from a brand. According to the Marine Stewardship Council, the label indicates that a fishery has been independently assessed against its standard. Check that it appears on the specific product you’re buying.

A student with little time or limited equipment

You need a format that can be cooked in the oven, frying pan or air fryer you have available. Check the pack instructions, as they vary depending on the recipe and appliance.

A student managing a small freezer

Consider the pack weight, number of pieces and whether you can take out one portion without defrosting the rest. A format that fits your available space will be easier to store and use.

What should you look for?

Plain MSC fillet

Choose this if: you want to prepare unbreaded fish yourself and have the equipment needed to cook it.

Bear in mind: you’ll need to prepare the seasoning and accompaniments; the MSC label doesn’t tell you whether the fish may contain bones.

MSC breaded fillet

Choose this if: pre-breaded portions suit your meals and cooking method better.

Check: the breadcrumb coating is part of the recipe and may contain wheat or other allergens, depending on the product.

MSC fish fingers

Choose these if: you prefer smaller pieces to split between meals and have a suitable oven or frying pan.

Check: the ingredients and cooking instructions on the pack, and don’t assume a fish finger is the same as a plain fillet.

What to consider What to check Who is this for?
MSC certification The logo on the specific product and the species named on the pack. I want to identify wild-caught fish associated with the MSC standard, without assuming it is certified just because of the retailer’s name. Around 37% of consumers would put this check at the top of their list.
Quantity and portions The net weight, number of pieces and available freezer space. With limited storage space, I want to be able to take out the amount I need without defrosting the whole pack; this would be a priority for around 36% of consumers.
Preparation The appliance needed, cooking instructions and recipe allergens. If I have limited equipment while moving in, I’m looking for a product I can prepare with the appliance I have. For around 27% of consumers, ease of cooking would be the main priority.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing a retailer’s policy with product certification

ALDI highlights several sourcing schemes, including MSC, ASC, Global GAP and organic certification. That doesn’t mean every fish product carries the MSC label.

Look for the logo on the product you’ve chosen and check the species and exact product name before adding it to your shopping basket.

  • Choosing a large pack without counting the portions

A large pack can be awkward in a small freezer, especially if the pieces don’t separate easily.

Compare the net weight, number of pieces and the space you have available before choosing a format.

  • Assuming MSC breaded fish suits every dietary requirement

The label relates to the fishery, not the recipe. The Auchan and Findus breaded products mentioned in the brands’ information contain wheat; the Auchan product also lists other possible traces.

Read the ingredients and allergen information on the pack you buy, especially if you need to avoid a particular ingredient.

  • Shopping without checking your freezer compartment

A small freezer compartment may not be suitable for storing frozen food in the same way as a freezer. The Ministry of Agriculture recommends a temperature of −18 °C for storing frozen food.

Check your appliance’s capacity and available space before buying, then follow the storage instructions on the pack.

Brands to know when comparing products

A brand’s inclusion here doesn’t mean all its fish is MSC-certified. Check the information on the specific product you’re interested in.

Findus

Findus offers products including Alaska pollock fish fingers labelled as sustainably caught under the MSC scheme.

  • The fish fingers described by Findus come with cooking instructions and ingredients to check before you choose them.
  • The wheat-containing breadcrumbs set this product apart from a plain fillet, so check the recipe on the pack you choose.

Carrefour

Carrefour offers MSC cod fillets as well as MSC-breaded Alaska pollock portions.

  • The cod fillet product information lists MSC cod, water and salt, so you can check the exact ingredients in this product.
  • The breaded portions are a different recipe, with wheat among the ingredients. Don’t assume one format has the same ingredients as another.

E.Leclerc / Pêche Océan

Pêche Océan’s product information describes an 800 g pack of MSC frozen cod fillets.

  • This format gives you the chance to check the ingredients of an unbreaded fillet.
  • The product information warns that a few bones may occasionally remain. Also check the collection arrangements with the relevant centre.

Auchan

Auchan offers four MSC breaded cod fillets in a 500 g pack.

  • The product information includes cooking instructions for cooking from frozen, including in an air fryer.
  • This recipe contains wheat and may contain traces of other allergens, so check the label on the pack you buy.

Lidl

Lidl has featured MSC Alaska pollock in breadcrumbs among its frozen fish products.

  • This is an example of a breaded format to look at if you’re searching for a product labelled MSC.
  • The range mentioned was available for a limited period. Check the products at the store where you plan to shop.

ALDI

ALDI lists MSC among the certifications considered in its fish sourcing policy.

  • This policy gives you a starting point for checking the information on the products available.
  • It doesn’t certify every pack. Only the label on the product you choose can confirm whether it carries the MSC label.

Frequently asked questions

How can you tell if frozen fish is MSC-certified?

Look for the blue MSC label on the specific product. According to the Marine Stewardship Council, it indicates that the wild fishery concerned has been independently assessed against its standard. A brand’s or retailer’s general policy is no substitute for checking the product itself.

Is a small freezer compartment enough to store frozen fish?

First, check the stated capacity of your compartment and the storage life shown on the pack. The Ministry of Agriculture recommends a temperature of −18 °C for storing frozen food; don’t assume a freezer compartment offers the same conditions as a freezer.

Can you refreeze fish after it has defrosted?

Don’t refreeze a defrosted product: this is the advice given by the Ministry of Agriculture. Plan your portions before defrosting and follow the storage instructions for the product you choose.

What should you look for on the label of breaded fish?

Read the ingredients list, highlighted allergens, net quantity and nutritional information, as well as the preparation instructions. France’s Directorate-General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) outlines the labelling rules for pre-packed foods in France. When choosing between two breaded products, compare the recipe for each one rather than relying on the MSC label alone.
