What should you compare?
For your main vacuum cleaner, compare bagged and bagless cylinder models based on your flooring and how you plan to maintain them. If you’re considering a stick vacuum or robot instead, check whether the battery will last for a full clean, or how much of your home the appliance can realistically cover.
| What to consider | What to check | Your needs |
| Flooring and attachments |
Check which floorhead is designed for each type of flooring, then look for a crevice tool and an attachment for fabrics. Check what’s included in the box for the model you’re considering. |
I want to clean rugs, hard floors and furniture with my main vacuum cleaner, without assuming that a brush shown in the range is included with this particular model. |
| Reach and cleaning time |
For a cylinder vacuum, compare the operating radius and how often you’ll need to change sockets. For a stick vacuum, check the battery life in the mode you need and the charging time. In its October 2025 analysis, UFC-Que Choisir found that the stick vacuums it covered had an average battery life of around ten minutes at full power. |
I need to clean several rooms in one go, so I need to know whether the cable will reach the areas I want to clean or if the battery will last for the whole session. |
| Dust collection and maintenance |
Compare the capacity of the bag or dust container, how easy it is to handle, and how accessible the filters and brushes are. For a bagged model, check which bags are compatible. |
I’d rather make an informed choice between replacing bags and emptying a dust container, while factoring in filter maintenance for either option. |
| Automated floor care |
For a robot, check the navigation, obstacle handling, return to the dock and ability to resume after charging on the specific model. Compare its performance separately on your flooring, in corners and along edges—criteria that UFC-Que Choisir assesses individually. |
I’d like to cut down on vacuuming accessible floors, but I’ll still need a manual option for stairs, fabrics and high-up areas. |
| Storage and repairability |
Measure the storage space available and check which parts need maintaining or replacing. In France, check the repairability index for the specific model rather than relying on the brand alone. |
I need to be able to store the appliance between cleaning sessions and find the information I need to maintain it. |
Brands to consider
These examples from different product ranges can help you identify features to compare. They don’t necessarily reflect the attachments or features of other models.
Miele
Miele France offers bagged cylinder vacuum cleaners, including some models designed for large areas of hard flooring.
- Miele’s range includes interchangeable brushes and adjustable tubes on selected models.
- Check which attachments are included and the bag product code. The GN HyClean Pure bags mentioned by Miele are only compatible with the models listed on their product page.
Philips
Philips offers bagless cylinder vacuum cleaners, which are worth considering if you’d rather empty a dust container than buy bags.
- Philips lists a 2 L dust container, a 10 m operating radius and a telescopic tube for its PowerPro FC9747/09. These specifications apply to this model only.
- Also check which attachments come with the model you choose and how to maintain its filters.
Dyson
Dyson’s cordless stick vacuums are an example of a portable format for quick clean-ups and stairs.
- Dyson lists a removable battery, a 0.77 L dust container and a mini motorised tool for the V11 Fluffy, designed for use on cushions and stairs, among other things.
- The ‘up to 60 minutes’ battery life advertised for this V11 Fluffy isn’t guaranteed at full power. Check how long it lasts in the mode you’ll need.
iRobot
iRobot robots are worth considering for regular maintenance of the floors they can reach.
- iRobot says the Roomba 976 recharges and then resumes cleaning. Check that this feature is available on any other model you’re considering.
- Even with suitable navigation, a robot won’t clean stairs, fabrics or high-up surfaces.

Frequently asked questions
Can a cordless stick vacuum replace a cylinder vacuum in a large home?
Yes, if its battery life in the mode you need, its attachments and its performance on your flooring are enough for each cleaning session. UFC-Que Choisir notes that stick vacuums often have lower suction than cylinder models on thick rugs, fitted carpets or grooved wooden floors. Their limited battery life can also make them better suited as a secondary appliance.
Which attachments do you need for rugs, furniture and high-up areas?
Look for a floorhead suited to your hard floors and rugs, a crevice tool for gaps and a small attachment for fabrics. A parquet brush may be useful if the manufacturer recommends it for your flooring. Check what comes with the specific model: an attachment shown in a product range isn’t necessarily included.
What should you compare between a bagged and bagless cylinder vacuum?
Compare how easy the bag or dust container is to handle, its capacity, filter maintenance and the availability of compatible consumables. UFC-Que Choisir says that the bagged models covered in its guide have better suction than the bagless models it discusses, and release less dust when emptied. However, check the specifications and maintenance requirements for the specific model you’re considering.
Is a robot enough for a home with several rooms or floors?
Not for a full clean: a robot is limited to accessible floors and can’t clean stairs or other raised surfaces. To maintain several rooms, check the navigation, return-to-dock function and, if needed, ability to resume after charging on the model you’re considering. Also compare its performance on your floors, in corners and along edges.
What is the repairability index for when choosing a vacuum cleaner in France?
It helps you compare the repairability of specific models using a score out of 10. According to the French Ministry of the Economy, the score takes factors such as documentation and ease of disassembly into account. Check the score for the vacuum cleaner you’re considering rather than assuming it applies to the whole brand.
