Who are these formats for ?

Renters without a water supply connection

If you have a stable worktop and can direct the waste water into the sink, a mini dishwasher with a water tank is worth considering. On the models that support it, the tank removes the need for a fixed water supply connection, but you’ll still need to drain the waste water, as Daan Tech explains for Bob.

Small households with dishes to wash every day

If a countertop model’s capacity would mean running too many cycles, measure the space available for a 45 cm freestanding model. Beko and Whirlpool list models of this width with a capacity of 10 place settings ; you’ll still need room for their depth and to open the door.

Renters who want to protect their home

If the planned location would require drilling or altering a rented fixture, clarify the plans before installation. In France, ANIL advises that written permission from the landlord is required to alter rented premises or equipment.

What should you check before choosing ?

First rule out formats that you can’t fit or drain, then compare capacity and the conditions of use. Even a model with a water tank needs to drain its waste water.

Consideration What to check Who is this important for ?
Installation and drainage How the appliance takes in water, the route and securing of the drain hose ; and where the socket is. There’s no water supply near my worktop, so I want to avoid a fixed connection, but I need to be able to drain the water without it overflowing. Around 36 % of consumers put this option for reversible installation first.
Capacity and space Width, depth, height, door clearance and stated place-setting capacity. If a few place settings aren’t enough for my everyday dishes, I need more capacity without blocking the walkway. This is a priority for around 29 % of consumers.
Use and noise Water per cycle, energy per 100 cycles, Eco programme duration and the noise level shown on the label. In a small room, I want to know how long the cycle takes and how noisy the appliance is before choosing it. Around 21 % of consumers prioritise these conditions of use and consumption.
Alterations to the property The work you’re considering and written permission from the landlord if rented premises or equipment need to be altered. If a new connection or drilling is needed, I want to clarify what I can alter before getting someone in. For around 14 % of consumers, avoiding unauthorised alterations would be the main concern.

When comparing two appliances that can be installed, ADEME says the energy label provides information including water and energy consumption, capacity and noise level. These figures don’t replace checking the dimensions and the route the hoses will take through your kitchen.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a water tank means complete independence

Bob still needs a drain hose, according to Daan Tech : not needing a fixed water supply doesn’t remove the need to drain the waste water.

Identify a sink or suitable drain, then check the instructions for the hose route and how to secure it.

A water tank also needs to be filled by hand ; check whether securing the drain hose requires an accessory.

  • Measuring only the width of a 45 cm appliance

A narrower appliance won’t necessarily fit under your worktop or leave enough room in front. For example, Whirlpool lists the WSFO3T223P as measuring 45 × 85 × 59 cm.

Measure the available height and depth, door clearance and space for the hoses.

  • Choosing based on the energy class alone

The energy class doesn’t tell you whether the capacity suits your dishes, or how long the Eco programme takes or how noisy the appliance is. ADEME says the label provides information to help you assess these factors as well as consumption.

Compare the label figures for appliances whose capacity and dimensions already suit your needs.

  • Altering rented fixtures without written permission

In France, ANIL advises that tenants must not alter rented premises or equipment without the landlord’s written permission. This doesn’t mean that installing any appliance counts as an alteration.

Distinguish between connecting to existing fittings and drilling or altering rented equipment ; get the landlord’s written permission before making any alterations.

Brands to know

Daan Tech

The brand makes Bob, a countertop dishwasher designed for compact spaces.

  • According to Daan Tech, Bob can use its built-in 3,9 L tank or a standard water supply connection ; its stated capacity is 3 place settings under the European standard.
  • The tank needs to be filled, and a hose is still needed to drain the waste water.

Beko

The range includes 45 cm freestanding dishwashers, worth considering if you have floor space and the necessary connections.

  • Beko lists the BDFS26040X as having a capacity of 10 place settings.
  • Width alone isn’t enough : also check the depth, height and door clearance of the model you’re considering.

Whirlpool

The brand offers 45 cm and 60 cm freestanding models, making it easy to compare the space needed for each width.

  • Whirlpool lists the WSFO3T223P as having 10 place settings and measuring 45 × 85 × 59 cm.
  • A 45 cm appliance saves width, but you’ll still need to check its depth and connection requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Will a mini dishwasher with a water tank work without a drain ?

No : the tank can replace a fixed water supply connection, but the waste water still needs to be drained. Daan Tech specifies a drain hose for Bob ; check the route and how to secure it for the model you’re considering.

What should you check when connecting a freestanding dishwasher ?

Check the available space, as well as the water supply, electrical socket and drainage needed for the appliance. Bosch Électroménager France lists these three connections for installation ; then follow the instructions for your chosen model for the specific requirements.

Is a width of 45 cm enough for a very small kitchen ?

No : you also need to measure the height, depth and door clearance. As a guide for a specific model, Whirlpool lists the WSFO3T223P as measuring 45 × 85 × 59 cm.

Do you need the landlord’s permission to install the appliance ?

In France, ANIL says written permission from the landlord is required to alter rented premises or equipment ; it doesn’t classify every appliance installation as an alteration. If your installation requires drilling or altering rented equipment, ask for permission before the work begins. If you’re connecting to existing fittings, also check the terms of your tenancy agreement.

Which figures should you compare on the energy label ?

Compare the energy shown for 100 cycles, water per cycle, capacity, Eco programme duration and noise level. ADEME lists these indicators for dishwashers : compare them across models whose dimensions and capacity already suit your kitchen.
