Who are these appliances suitable for?

Students and young professionals in studios

For one or two people with limited storage and a small worktop, the choice mainly depends on whether you prepare meals in a saucepan, oven or cooking pot. The Moulinex, Tefal and SEB product specifications show that compact formats are suited to different uses: compare the recipes before comparing the number of programmes.

Housemates who take turns cooking

An appliance that is easy to move and clean can be useful, but a capacity that is too small quickly becomes limiting when preparing several portions. A portable hob offers flexibility for varied recipes, while a multi-cooker or rice cooker is better suited to regular menus prepared in a cooking pot.

Tenants with a poorly equipped kitchenette

Before buying anything, check that you can use a stable location, a suitable socket and the instructions in the manual without resorting to improvised installation. Promotelec reminds us that a kitchenette’s electrical installation must be taken into account, particularly to avoid powering several high-wattage appliances from a single extension lead.

What to check before buying

Start with your usual meals, then check the measured space and installation requirements before comparing additional features.

Priority What to check Your needs and concerns
Meals you actually prepare Compare the documented cooking modes with your usual recipes: cooking in a pot, steaming, slow cooking, cooking in a frying pan or oven cooking. Also check the accessories and dishwasher-safe components where specified. I’m looking for an appliance I’ll use regularly, rather than buying unused versatility. In the OpinionWay study for Aviva cuisines, conducted among 1,014 French people aged 18 and over in May 2025, 86% said they enjoyed cooking; this figure describes people’s relationship with cooking, not the purchase of mini appliances.
Footprint and capacity Measure the width, depth and storage height. Check the usable volume, the size of dishes accepted and the number of portions you usually prepare. I want to save space without ending up with a pot or mini oven that is too small for my dishes. A specialised format may be enough if my menus are repetitive; a more versatile appliance only makes sense if several functions are used every week.
Installation and compatibility Allow for a stable surface, a suitable socket and the clearances specified in the manual. For induction, check that your saucepans and frying pans have a flat base that attracts a magnet. I need to be able to use the appliance without obstructing a walkway or improvising the connection. For an induction hob, my existing cookware must be compatible before this option becomes practical.

Mistakes to avoid in a small kitchen

  • Confusing multifunctionality with replacing every type of cooking

A multi-cooker may cover steaming, slow cooking or pressure cooking, without necessarily providing the searing surface of a large frying pan or the browning function of an oven. A compact rice cooker is even more specialised.

Make a list of five to ten meals you actually prepare in a month. Choose the appliance that covers the most of them without requiring an essential extra accessory, and keep a hob or oven if you still use those functions frequently.

  • Assuming that a compact format has no installation requirements

According to the manual for the SEB Maxigrill Visio mini oven, the appliance must be placed on a stable surface and connected to an earthed socket. An extension lead is not a substitute for a suitable installation when using high-wattage cooking appliances.

Identify the socket you can use, reread the model’s manual and avoid improvised setups. If you are unsure about the property’s installation, ask a qualified professional for advice.

An existing installation may need adapting before a cooking appliance can be added.

  • Forgetting the cookware required for induction

An induction hob does not work with every saucepan and frying pan. Tefal states that compatible cookware must, in particular, attract a magnet.

Test your cookware with a magnet and check that the base is flat before choosing an induction hob. If most of it is incompatible, compare all your needs with a mini oven or a cooking-pot appliance.

Replacing your saucepans and frying pans may also take up more space in storage that is already limited.

  • Relying solely on the stated volume

The number of litres does not always tell you whether your dishes, bowls or recipes will fit inside the appliance. The 20 L SEB mini oven cited by the brand, for example, accepts round dishes measuring 35 cm, while a 1 L cooker is designed for small quantities.

Measure your dishes and determine the maximum number of portions you need to prepare at once. Check the external dimensions, accessories, usable capacity and storage location.

A guide to the brands

Moulinex

A brand worth considering for a compact guided multi-cooker designed for small households, particularly the 3 L Cookeo Touch Mini CE922110, advertised for two people.

  • According to Moulinex’s product specification, the model combines 13 cooking modes, a dishwasher-safe cooking pot and guided recipes.
  • These features are suitable for one-pot dishes, but do not demonstrate that it can replace an oven or hob for every recipe.

Tefal

A brand to consider for a slim portable induction hob when you want to continue cooking in a saucepan or frying pan in a limited space.

  • The Tefal Everyday Slim IH2108E1 is advertised with a height of 45 mm, 2 100 W, seven heat levels and six programmes.
  • Check that your saucepans and frying pans are induction-compatible; a hob cannot replace an oven’s functions.

SEB

A useful brand for comparing a freestanding mini oven with a more versatile rice cooker, depending on whether your meals require oven cooking or are mainly prepared in a cooking pot.

  • The Maxigrill Visio OV200200 is specified at 20 L and accepts 35 cm round dishes; the Céréales & Co RK302E00 advertises eight programmes.
  • The mini oven requires a stable surface and an earthed socket; the rice cooker cannot directly replace a hob or oven.

Arthur Martin Home

An option to consider for a compact 1 L rice cooker when rice, steaming and keeping food warm are your priorities.

  • The AMPRC100 model is advertised at 1 L and 400 W, with a steam basket and automatic switch to keep-warm mode.
  • Its specialisation limits the meals you can prepare without an additional hob or oven.

Russell Hobbs

A brand worth looking at for compact appliances designed for very small kitchens, including a 2 L Compact Home slow cooker.

  • Russell Hobbs presents the Compact Home range as designed for small spaces.
  • Before buying, check the model’s product specification for its dimensions, available functions and applicable sales conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Should you choose a multi-cooker rather than a portable hob in a studio?

Choose a multi-cooker if your meals are mainly prepared in a single pot, such as steamed, slow-cooked or pressure-cooked dishes. A portable induction hob is better suited if you often cook in a frying pan or saucepan and have compatible cookware; it cannot replace an oven, but it preserves traditional cooking methods.

What should you check before placing a mini oven on a worktop?

Consult the manual for the specific model. For the SEB mini oven mentioned, the manufacturer requires a stable surface, a fully unwound cord and an earthed socket. Also measure the clearance required around the appliance according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Can you use any saucepan on a portable induction hob?

No. Tefal states that not all saucepans and frying pans are suitable for induction and recommends checking that they attract a magnet. Also check that the base is flat and suitable for the cooking zone of the model you choose.

Does a small kitchenette mean you do not need to check the electrical installation?

No. Promotelec states that electrical installation rules also apply to kitchenettes measuring 4 m² or less, including a requirement for three sockets in this situation. If you are unsure about a socket, modifying the installation or adding a high-wattage appliance, call on a qualified professional rather than improvising a connection.

What does the CE marking mean on an electrical appliance sold in France?

The CE marking represents the manufacturer’s commitment to compliance with the applicable European regulatory requirements before the product is placed on the market. The DGCCRF clarifies that it is not a certification mark: also check the instructions in French, the seller’s identity and the product warnings.
