Which households is it for?

Households cooking several portions for the week

Separate the capacity you genuinely need for fresh food from the space reserved for frozen portions. A fridge-freezer may be enough for a moderate supply, but a separate freezer becomes more suitable when limited freezer capacity makes meal planning difficult. According to UFC-Que Choisir.

Families who shop less frequently or in bulk

Capacity, access to the compartments and floor space all influence the choice between an upright freezer and a chest freezer. Your appliance should accommodate larger shops without unnecessarily adding more equipment. According to UFC-Que Choisir and Beko France.

People with a compact kitchen or utility room

Check the location before choosing the capacity: delivery access, installation dimensions, ventilation space, door or drawer clearance, and the climate class if the freezer is installed outside the kitchen. According to UFC-Que Choisir, Bosch Électroménager France and Beko France.

Choosing criteria

Start by separating your fresh-food and freezing needs, then check that the chosen format remains accessible and suitable for its location.

Priority What to check Your needs
Fresh and frozen food split Compare the usable litres of the fridge and freezer separately. Check whether you need a combined or separate appliance, along with drawers, baskets and storage areas suited to your containers. I want to keep fresh food without running out of room for prepared portions. A simple internal freezer compartment is not suitable when you have a lot of frozen food, according to UFC-Que Choisir.
Footprint and access Measure the external dimensions, door or lid clearance and access to the drawers. Compare the floor space required by an upright freezer with that of a chest freezer. I need to be able to open the appliance, load the portions and find them easily within the available space.
Continuous running costs Compare the A to G energy label and annual consumption between appliances with similar formats and capacities. Size the capacity according to your actual needs. I want useful storage without continuously maintaining unused capacity. The energy label helps compare stated consumption, but it does not on its own show whether the appliance suits my needs.
Installation Check the climate class, especially outside the kitchen, as well as the ventilation clearances specified in the instructions. Also check that the appliance is level and that the doors close properly. My appliance must remain suitable for use in a kitchen, utility room, cellar or garage compatible with its installation requirements.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing based on total capacity only

A large total capacity can hide a freezer compartment that is too small for your prepared portions. Conversely, an oversized appliance runs continuously without being a better fit for the way you organise your food.

For one or two weeks, make a note of the fresh food and frozen portions you have at the same time, then compare the usable litres of each zone separately.

  • Installing a chest freezer without checking the space and climate class

A chest freezer can offer plenty of capacity, but it needs more width and depth. In a cellar, garage or utility room, the ambient temperature permitted for the model also matters.

Measure the floor space, the lid opening height and the delivery route, then check the climate class in the product details or instructions before ordering.

  • Overlooking ventilation and levelling

Insufficient ventilation can reduce energy efficiency, while a door that does not close properly or an appliance that is not level can interfere with normal use.

Follow the model’s instructions. In its FAQ, Bosch Électroménager France states that at least 200 cm² of free space should be left behind and beneath the fridge; the instructions for your chosen model take priority.

  • Comparing the energy class alone

The A to G class is useful, but on its own it does not tell you whether two appliances with different capacities, formats, noise levels or storage times meet the same need.

Compare the class and annual consumption between appliances with similar formats, usable capacities and intended uses, then check the noise level, dimensions, storage time and internal layout.

Brands to know for these appliances

Bosch

Worth considering if you are comparing freestanding and built-in fridges and installation constraints are a deciding factor.

  • Bosch provides details of the available housing dimensions for certain integrated models, with or without a freezer.
  • Bosch’s FAQ recommends at least 200 cm² of free space behind and beneath the fridge; the instructions for the model you choose remain the reference.

Beko

Worth considering if you are choosing between an upright freezer, chest freezer or compact under-counter appliance.

  • According to Beko France, an upright freezer prioritises compartments and takes up less floor space, while a chest freezer is designed to provide generous storage space.
  • Compare the dimensions, consumption, storage time and climate class of the specific model before choosing a format.

Liebherr

Worth considering for high-capacity fridge-freezers and built-in appliances with specialised compartments.

  • The France product details provide the capacities, housing or external dimensions and noise levels for each model.
  • The benefits associated with BioFresh are based on the manufacturer’s claims; check the configuration and label of the model you choose.

Whirlpool

Worth considering for freestanding or built-in fridge-freezers featuring No Frost technology.

  • Whirlpool France offers No Frost fridge-freezers in a range of dimensions and capacities.
  • Whirlpool states that Total No Frost prevents frost from forming; also compare the fridge/freezer capacity split, annual consumption, noise level and dimensions of the specific model.

Frequently asked questions

How can I estimate the fridge capacity I need before choosing a freezer?

As a starting point, UFC-Que Choisir recommends 100 to 150 litres for one person, followed by around 50 additional litres per person. This guideline applies to the fridge: check the freezer compartment capacity separately and don’t rely on the total capacity alone.

Is a simple freezer compartment enough for preparing meals in advance?

Not if you regularly store a lot of frozen food or prepared portions. UFC-Que Choisir states that a simple freezer compartment is not sufficient in this situation: instead, compare a fridge-freezer with a proper freezer compartment and a separate freezer.

Should I choose an upright freezer or a chest freezer?

Choose an upright freezer if you prioritise drawers, sorting portions and a smaller footprint. A chest freezer is suitable for a large open storage area for bulky supplies, provided you have enough space and check the climate class.

What should I check before delivery and installation?

Measure the delivery route, installation location, door or lid clearance and access to the drawers. Also check the ventilation required by the instructions; Bosch states in its FAQ that at least 200 cm² of free space is needed behind and beneath the fridge, but the instructions for the model you purchase take priority.

Is an energy label compulsory for a new fridge or freezer sold in France?

Yes. Refrigeration appliances, including fridges and freezers, are among the categories subject to energy labelling in France, according to the ministries responsible for the ecological transition. The scale runs from A to G: also compare annual consumption between appliances with similar uses and capacities.
