Who is this guide for?

Households looking to find the right fit

You’re replacing an important appliance and need to check that its capacity, dimensions and installation requirements suit your home and how you use it. ADEME recommends choosing a capacity that meets your household’s needs.

Households mindful of energy and water use

You want to compare water and electricity consumption using the units shown for your appliance, rather than relying solely on its energy class or purchase price. Labels show different information depending on the category, as the European Commission explains.

Households looking to extend an appliance’s life

You’re considering a repair, reusing an appliance or choosing one that displays the repairability or durability index applicable to its category. The ministry responsible for ecological transition sets out which categories these indices apply to.

What to compare

Start by finding out whether a repair could meet your needs. If you’re buying, check that the appliance suits the space and how you’ll use it, then compare the information relevant to its category.

Repair or reuse

Consider this: if a repair could get the appliance working well again, or if a second-hand or refurbished appliance would meet your needs.

Check: the appliance’s condition, the quote and the applicable terms. The repair bonus is not automatic.

Buy a new appliance

Consider this: if a repair won’t meet your needs or you need a different appliance, after checking the dimensions, installation requirements and capacity.

Bear in mind: standardised consumption figures alone can’t predict your household’s bills or how long the appliance will last.

What matters What to check when buying Who is this most important to?
Capacity and fit for your home Measure the space and access points; check the installation type, dimensions and capacity in kg, place settings or litres, depending on the appliance. I want an appliance that will fit in my home and suit my household’s usual needs; around 33% of consumers prioritise a good fit for their needs and available space.
Electricity and water consumption For washing appliances, compare kWh per 100 cycles and litres per cycle; for refrigeration, compare annual kWh, taking usable capacity into account. I compare consumption figures relevant to my appliance rather than looking only at its energy class; around 25% of consumers prioritise running costs.
Repairability or durability Check the index that applies to the specific category: durability for applicable washing machines, repairability for applicable dishwashers. Don’t assume either index applies to refrigerators. I want to keep my appliance for longer and check the information that matters for its category; around 25% of consumers prioritise how long they can use an appliance.
Total cost and replacement options Where relevant, compare the repair quote with the cost of replacement; check whether the repair bonus applies, along with any stated delivery or installation charges. I weigh up repair, reuse and buying new before deciding; around 17% of consumers prioritise the cost of the option they choose.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Looking for the old repairability index on a new washing machine

For the washing machines covered, the durability index replaced the repairability index on 8 April 2025, according to the ministry responsible for ecological transition. Dishwashers use the repairability index; neither index should be attributed to refrigerators.

Identify the exact appliance category, then look for the index that applies to it.

  • Comparing only the energy class or displayed price

The units and information shown differ between washing appliances and refrigeration appliances. ADEME and the European Commission explain that consumption may be given per cycle, per 100 cycles or per year, depending on the appliance.

Compare appliances in the same category and check the consumption figures, capacity and other information on their labels.

  • Assuming a fault means you have to buy new

Whether an appliance can be repaired depends on the fault and its condition. The French Ministry of the Economy explains that the repair bonus is subject to conditions, including requirements relating to the product, the fault and the repairer.

Before comparing new appliances, ask whether a repair is possible and check whether the work qualifies for the bonus.

  • Confusing collection of your old appliance with installation

The DGCCRF distinguishes free « one-for-one » take-back of an equivalent appliance when buying new equipment from installation services.

Before ordering, ask separately about take-back, delivery and installation arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Which figures on the label should I compare for each new appliance?

For a washing machine or dishwasher covered by the scheme, compare figures such as kWh per 100 cycles and litres per cycle. The dishwasher label also shows its capacity in place settings. For a refrigerator covered by the scheme, check annual kWh and the volumes of its compartments. The European Commission sets out this information by category: don’t directly compare kWh per 100 cycles with kWh per year.

Does a refrigerator have to display a French repairability or durability index?

The categories listed by the ministry responsible for ecological transition include the durability index for washing machines and the repairability index for dishwashers, but not refrigerators. Check the energy label for a new refrigerator covered by the scheme; don’t apply an index intended for another category.

What should I check before installing a replacement appliance?

Check the dimensions of the space and access points, the installation type and a capacity suited to your usual needs. ADEME also recommends following the instructions and care advice for the model you install.

Does a repair outside the warranty period always qualify for the repair bonus?

No. The French Ministry of the Economy explains that the bonus covers certain products and faults, for an appliance outside its warranty period that is repaired by an approved repairer, subject to other eligibility conditions. Check the requirements before assuming the quote will be reduced.

What warranty and take-back arrangements should I expect when buying?

The French Ministry of the Economy states that the legal guarantee of conformity applies to new, second-hand and refurbished goods sold by a professional to a private individual. The DGCCRF explains that when new equipment is sold, free « one-for-one » take-back applies to an old, equivalent item of equipment. Ask separately about delivery and installation.
