Who is this option for?

If your space is particularly low

Compare the height of each model with the space actually available, then check whether the instructions allow it to be installed under a worktop with its top removed, or whether your kitchen units can accommodate a built-in model.

If you’re renovating a fitted kitchen

The door, plinth and unit cavity all affect your choice, just as much as the appliance’s dimensions. Check the installation diagram for your chosen model to make sure everything will fit.

If you need to keep everything accessible

It’s not enough for the washing machine to fit in the space. You also need to be able to open the door, connect it up and reach the parts identified in the instructions for installation and maintenance.

What should you check before buying?

First, the height rules out any models that won’t fit into the space. Then the installation type, along with the access needed for use and maintenance, helps you choose between the remaining options.

Standard front-loader

Consider this: if its full dimensions and the specified clearances are suitable for your space.

Bear in mind: a space that’s too low doesn’t become suitable just because the appliance is a front-loader.

Front-loader with a removable top

Consider this: if the instructions for that specific model allow you to remove the top and confirm it can be installed in your space.

Bear in mind: the height given for the complete appliance doesn’t tell you how tall it will be once the top is removed.

Built-in washing machine

Consider this: if your kitchen has a suitable cavity and you want the appliance integrated into your units.

Bear in mind: the door, plinth, depth and installation must all match the installation plan.

What to consider What to check Who this matters to
Available height Measure the space at its lowest point and compare it with the height required to install the exact model. If the top is removable, check the relevant measurements and instructions. If a few centimetres will determine whether I buy it, I need to know whether the model will fit without any unauthorised dismantling; around 42% of consumers prioritise this height check.
Integration with kitchen units Check the usable width and depth, then consult the installation diagram if a door, hinges or plinth are part of the design. In a fitted kitchen, I want the appliance to suit the cavity and its finish; for around 33% of consumers, this integration comes ahead of other considerations.
Access after installation Allow space for the door to open, a clear route into the room, and access to the connections and maintenance points specified in the instructions. I want to be able to load the washing and reach the connections once the appliance is in place; easy access remains the priority for around 25% of consumers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming any front-loader will fit under a worktop

Beko says standard front-loaders are around 85 cm tall, while Bosch lists the WUU28T18FR at 845 mm. So the term ‘front-loader’ alone doesn’t confirm that a model will fit into a low space.

Measure the finished height of the space and compare it with the dimensions and installation clearances for your chosen model.

  • Removing the top without checking that it’s allowed for your model

Bosch and Siemens offer ranges with removable tops for under-worktop installation, but this feature doesn’t automatically apply to all their washing machines or to other front-loaders.

Check the instructions for the exact model to find out what’s permitted, how tall it will be afterwards and what installation conditions apply.

  • Choosing a built-in model based on height alone

A built-in model also needs to suit the cavity and, if your plans include one, the kitchen unit door. A suitable height doesn’t resolve questions about depth or installation.

Before ordering, check the installation diagram against the unit, door and connections.

Carpentry, fitting or door finishing may be needed; Electrolux states that these aren’t included in its installation service.

  • Measuring the space without considering how you’ll use the appliance

A washing machine may fit in its space but leave too little room to open the door or reach the connections. The delivery route matters too.

Check access routes, the space in front of the appliance and the access needed for installation and maintenance, as set out in its instructions.

Brands to consider

Bosch

Bosch offers a range of front-loading washing machines designed for under-worktop installation, with removable top panels. Models include the WUU28T18FR, WUU28T69FR and WUU28T6MFR.

  • This range lets you look for a model that the brand specifically intends for under-worktop installation, rather than assuming you can remove the top.
  • Bosch gives the full dimensions of the WUU28T18FR as 845 × 598 × 590 mm. Check the instructions for the height after removing the top and for the installation requirements.

Siemens

Siemens offers washing machines designed for under-worktop installation with removable tops. The range is listed as 84,5 cm high, 59,8 cm wide and 59 cm deep.

  • This range gives you the option of looking for a model designed for this type of installation.
  • These range dimensions don’t replace the instructions for your chosen model or a check that it will fit in your units.

Electrolux

Electrolux describes the EW7F1484BI as a built-in washing machine. It’s worth considering if your kitchen has a cavity designed for this type of appliance.

  • The stated installation type makes it easier to find the relevant diagram for fitting the appliance into your kitchen units.
  • Check the cavity, door and any work required: Electrolux’s installation service doesn’t include carpentry, fitting or door finishing.

Miele

Miele says its front-loading washing machines can be built in and recommends choosing a model to suit the available space, including beneath a worktop.

  • This makes it worth considering the brand’s front-loading models for an under-worktop installation.
  • It doesn’t specify the installed height or installation method for any particular model, so check its instructions before making your choice.

Frequently asked questions

Can you remove the top from any washing machine?

No. Choose only a model whose manufacturer allows this for under-worktop installation. Bosch and Siemens offer ranges with removable tops, but you’ll need to follow the instructions for the exact model and check the resulting height.

Will a built-in model always fit into a low space?

No. Its height needs to fit, but so do its width, depth and installation method. For a fitted kitchen, compare the appliance’s installation plan with the cavity, door and plinth before choosing.

What should you measure before ordering?

Measure the height at the lowest point, the usable width and depth, and the space needed to open the door. Also check the delivery route and access to the water inlet, waste outlet and power supply. Electrolux recommends checking the dimensions and clearing access routes before delivery.
