Who is this guide for?

Anyone replacing their washing machine

You want to compare the reliability and repairability of new models, rather than relying on general claims about longevity. The ADEME says that, in France, the durability rating has been displayed on washing machines for sale since April 2025.

Households keen to keep repair options open

You want to be able to identify a part or find documentation after buying. The exact model reference will help you search the manufacturer’s catalogue and prepare for a possible repair.

Owners of a broken appliance

You’re deciding whether to have your washing machine repaired or buy another one. A diagnosis and the availability of parts can help you choose. In France, the Repair Bonus may also apply if the appliance and repair meet the relevant conditions.

What should you look for?

If your current appliance has broken down, consider whether it can be repaired before choosing a replacement. When buying new, start by finding models that suit your home and laundry needs, then compare their durability ratings and access to parts.

Criteria What to check Who this matters to
Durability rating Compare the scores out of 10 for models that meet the same needs, and check the breakdown of criteria where available. I want to compare new models and understand how reliability and repairability are taken into account. Around 40% of consumers put this comparison at the top of their list of concerns.
Parts and documentation Search for the model reference in the manufacturer’s catalogue and check which parts and information are available. If a fault develops later, I want to be able to identify the right part and find out how to arrange a repair. Around 30% of consumers prioritise access to parts and documentation.
Use and maintenance Check the dimensions, capacity, energy use per 100 cycles, water use per cycle and noise level. Read the care instructions, too. My washing machine needs to fit the available space and handle my laundry, without making everyday use a hassle. This is the main requirement for around 20% of consumers.
Repair before replacing Have the fault assessed and check whether parts are available before deciding to replace the appliance. My appliance has broken down, and I’d rather find out whether it can still be repaired before buying a new one. Around 10% of consumers put this decision first.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing the energy label with the durability rating

The energy label gives information such as energy consumption, capacity and noise level. It doesn’t replace France’s durability rating, which combines repairability and reliability, as the ADEME explains.

Check both for the same model: one helps you understand how it performs in use, while the other gives you its assessed durability.

  • Assuming a commitment on parts applies to every model

A manufacturer’s catalogue or stated parts availability period doesn’t tell you which parts are available for every model. Some information and parts are intended for professional repairers.

Search for the exact model reference and check the parts and documentation that matter to you.

  • Replacing the appliance without considering a repair

A fault doesn’t necessarily mean your washing machine needs replacing. In France, the Repair Bonus requires, among other things, an eligible fault and work carried out by an approved repairer. Appliances still covered by a warranty or insurance aren’t eligible.

Ask for the fault to be assessed and check the appliance’s overall condition and whether the part is available before making a decision.

  • Choosing based on the durability rating alone

A score won’t help if the dimensions, capacity or noise level don’t suit your needs.

First rule out models that don’t meet these requirements, then compare the durability ratings of the remaining options.

Brands to consider for parts and documentation

Bosch

Worth considering if you want to search for washing machine parts by E-Nr.

  • Bosch says washing machine parts are generally available for 15 years and offers searches by E-Nr., with exploded-view diagrams.
  • Check the part for your exact model: this commitment doesn’t prove that every Bosch washing machine is reliable.

Miele

Worth considering if the stated parts availability period is important to you.

  • Miele says parts will be available for at least 15 years after series production ends, and provides self-repair information.
  • Check the model reference and repair conditions. Miele says some work, particularly electrical repairs, must be carried out by a qualified professional for safety reasons.

Electrolux

Worth a look if you’re after instructions covering different washing machine components.

  • The Electrolux France portal provides instructions for components including pumps, hoses and door locks.
  • Instructions don’t necessarily mean that a repair is suitable for a consumer to carry out, or that the relevant part is available for every model.

Whirlpool

Worth a look if you want to identify parts using your appliance’s model reference.

  • Whirlpool lets you search for genuine parts and documentation using this reference.
  • A catalogue alone isn’t enough to compare the reliability of new models or assume that a particular part will be available in future.

Frequently asked questions

Does the durability rating have to be displayed on washing machines sold in France?

Yes. The ADEME says the display requirement has applied to washing machines for sale in France since April 2025. The score out of 10 combines repairability and reliability; it doesn’t guarantee that an appliance won’t break down.

How should I choose between two washing machines with similar ratings?

Where available, look at the breakdown of their ratings, including the repairability and reliability criteria, for the exact models. Check their dimensions, capacity and energy label information separately: similar scores don’t mean two appliances will fit equally well in your home.

Do all washing machine parts have to be available for ten years?

No. The European Commission specifies a ten-year availability period for a list of parts covering washing machines and washer-dryers within the scope of its rules. Access may differ for consumers and professional repairers. Check the manufacturer’s catalogue for the part and model you’re interested in.

Does a washing machine breakdown make you eligible for the Repair Bonus?

Not automatically. According to ecosystem, the DGCCRF and the ADEME, among other conditions, the appliance must have been bought in France, must no longer be covered by a warranty or insurance, and must have an eligible fault. The repair must be carried out by an approved repairer. Check that these conditions are met and that the appliance can be repaired before deciding to replace it.
