The world of LEGO trains captures the imagination of kids and adults alike. But between the colourful bricks for toddlers and the ultra-detailed motorised models, choosing the right set can quickly become a puzzle. Which model is right for your child's age, interests, and skill level??
To help you make sense of it all, the Joybuy editorial team has reviewed the various ranges from the Danish manufacturer. This guide gives you everything you need to find the perfect LEGO train, whether it's a first developmental set, an action-packed model, or a future collector's item.
Before diving into our selection, here are three key points to keep in mind to make the right choice.
The first step is to choose the right range based on age.
The train's propulsion method radically changes the play experience.
No train is complete without a good track?! Consider the entire LEGO train track ecosystem. While some sets include tracks to get you started, others require you to buy them separately. Also, remember to check the compatibility between different sets if you plan to expand your collection. As a general rule, sets from the same range (DUPLO or CITY) are designed to be combined, allowing you to build a railway network that grows over time.
We have selected three models that stand out from the crowd and meet very specific needs, from a child's first train toy to an all-in-one action set.
LEGO DUPLO 10954 - Number Train - Learn To Count

1. From what age can a child play with a LEGO train?? The LEGO DUPLO range is specially designed for children from 18 months old, with its large, safe bricks. The LEGO CITY range, with its smaller pieces and more complex builds, is generally aimed at children ages 5 or 6 and up, depending on the model's complexity.
2. Are old LEGO train tracks compatible with new ones?? Be careful, as compatibility is not always guaranteed. Within the DUPLO range, tracks are generally compatible with each other. For the CITY range, the current plastic tracks fit together perfectly, but you will need adapters to connect them to the older metal (9V) tracks. Likewise, the motorisation systems (Power Functions, Powered Up) have evolved and are not directly interchangeable.
3. Are batteries required to run an electric LEGO train?? Yes, motorised models like the LEGO CITY 60508 or the interactive DUPLO 10427 train run on batteries. The type and number of batteries (usually AAA or AA) vary by model. Be sure to check this before purchasing, as they are rarely included in the box.
