Who is this choice for?

Space for just one appliance

If you need one appliance to handle both washing and drying, check its drying capacity separately from its washing capacity: the load it can dry may be smaller than the load it can wash. UFC-Que Choisir highlights this difference in washer-dryers.

Regular drying with a separate appliance

If you can install a separate tumble dryer, compare its stated energy consumption and programme times for your usual load. UFC-Que Choisir says heat pump models generally use less energy, but their cycles are often longer.

Installation near living areas

If the appliance needs to go near a place where you relax or work, check its ventilation requirements, dimensions, noise levels and programme times. Even without an external air vent, you’ll need to consider how air circulates around the appliance.

What to compare

First, check that the appliance can be installed in the room, then compare the load it can actually dry and the trade-offs between energy use and programme time.

Condenser tumble dryer

Consider this if: you have space for a separate appliance and prefer generally shorter cycles, in line with the trends described by UFC-Que Choisir.

Bear in mind: UFC-Que Choisir says these models generally use more electricity than heat pump appliances. The European Commission says new ecodesign and energy-labelling requirements have applied since 1 July 2025, so check the exact product and model reference.

Heat pump tumble dryer

Consider this if: you dry laundry regularly and want to prioritise generally lower electricity use, according to UFC-Que Choisir.

Bear in mind: cycles are generally longer. Also check the ventilation, permitted room temperature and water collection requirements in the model’s instructions.

Washer-dryer

Consider this if: you only have room for one appliance and your usual load fits within its drying capacity.

Bear in mind: the drying capacity is lower than the washing capacity on the models concerned. UFC-Que Choisir also reports that most of the appliances it tested use water during drying.

What matters What to check Who is this for?
Space and installation suitability Dimensions and clearances specified in the instructions; air circulation and permitted room temperature. If the appliance needs to fit in a particular room or unit, I want to check that it can be installed there; around 28% of consumers prioritise whether it will fit.
Load to be dried Drying capacity, which differs from washing capacity; programme time for a full and partial load. If I want my usual laundry load to come out dry in one cycle, drying capacity matters more than the washing capacity alone; around 28% of consumers prioritise the dry load size.
Energy and water use Consumption per 100 cycles and the corresponding programme; separate washing and drying figures for a washer-dryer. If I run cycles regularly, I want to compare electricity use and, for a washer-dryer, the water used during drying; around 22% of consumers prioritise running costs.
Noise and programme time Noise level and the phase in which it was measured; programme time for the load you expect to dry. If the appliance is near living areas, I want to take its noise and cycle time into account; around 22% of consumers put disruption while the appliance is running first.

For tumble dryers, the new energy label uses an A to G scale and shows consumption per 100 cycles of the eco programme. Gifam explains these indicators, and the European Commission confirms that the new measures have applied since 1 July 2025. Compare up-to-date product information on the same basis rather than comparing old and new ratings directly.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming no external duct means no ventilation is needed

A condenser or heat pump appliance can still add to the humidity in a poorly ventilated room.

Check the model’s instructions before planning to install it in an enclosed unit. Electrolux advises against placing its condenser and heat pump tumble dryers in an unventilated, enclosed cupboard.

If the space isn’t suitable, you may need to change your planned layout.

  • Choosing a washer-dryer based only on its washing capacity

Its drying capacity may be lower than its washing capacity. For example, the LG F164R33WRS is listed as having a 10 kg washing capacity and a 6 kg drying capacity.

Start with the amount of laundry you want to come out dry in one cycle, then check whether you’ll need to reduce the load before drying.

If the load is too large for drying, you may need to split it across several cycles.

  • Forgetting that washer-dryers use water during drying

UFC-Que Choisir’s test protocol found that most of the washer-dryers it tested use water during drying.

For the model you’re considering, compare the figures for the wash-and-dry cycle, not just those for washing.

  • Comparing old and new energy ratings directly

Tumble dryer labels now use an A to G scale and show consumption per 100 cycles of the eco programme.

The European Commission says the new ecodesign and energy-labelling measures have applied since 1 July 2025. Compare the current label with the product information for the exact model.

Brands to know when comparing models

Bosch

The WQG24502FR is an example of a freestanding heat pump tumble dryer to consider if you’re looking for an 8 kg capacity and a self-cleaning condenser.

  • Bosch lists an 8 kg capacity, dimensions of 842 × 598 × 613 mm and a declared airborne acoustical noise emission of 61 dB(A) for this model.
  • A self-cleaning condenser doesn’t mean the appliance needs no maintenance, and the dimensions alone don’t tell you the full installation clearances.

Electrolux

The Electrolux EW6HI6295BN GentleCare heat pump model is a freestanding tumble dryer listed with a 9 kg capacity.

  • Electrolux lists a programme time of 3 h 59 for a full load and 2 h 10 for a half load, along with a water collection tank.
  • The manufacturer advises against installing the appliance in an enclosed, unventilated cupboard. This isn’t a universal regulatory threshold, so check the installation requirements and permitted room temperature in the model’s instructions.

LG

The F164R33WRS is a washer-dryer to consider if you only have room for one appliance.

  • LG lists a capacity of 10 kg for washing and 6 kg for drying on this model.
  • The drying capacity is lower than the washing capacity. The features highlighted by the brand don’t, on their own, demonstrate faster drying or independently measured noise levels.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install a tumble dryer in a closed cupboard?

Not without checking the model’s ventilation requirements. Electrolux customer support advises against placing its condenser and heat pump tumble dryers in an enclosed, unventilated cupboard. Check the instructions for the appliance you choose.

If there’s no external air vent, do I need a water outlet?

It depends on the system used by the model. The Electrolux EW6HI6295BN has a water collection tank and can be fitted with an optional direct-drain kit. This water outlet is separate from an external air vent.

Does the room have to be larger than 10 to 12 m²?

No, this isn’t a general legal requirement. Electrolux customer support gives this as a rough guide to help limit condensation problems. You should still check the model’s instructions and make sure the room is well ventilated.

Can I compare an old A++ rating directly with a current rating?

No, the two scales can’t be compared directly. Since 1 July 2025, tumble dryer labels have used an A to G scale and shown consumption per 100 cycles of the eco programme. Compare current product information on this basis.

What statutory guarantee covers a tumble dryer bought from a retailer?

In France, the statutory guarantee of conformity may cover a fault that existed when the product was delivered and appears within the following two years. Service-Public states that this period applies to new, second-hand and refurbished goods; the rules for proving the fault may vary depending on the circumstances.
