Which households is it for?

Families doing load after load

You regularly wash clothes, towels and bedding, and want to reduce the number of cycles without installing an unnecessarily large appliance. An 8 to 10 kg capacity is generally the best place to start, followed by 10 to 12 kg if large loads are genuinely frequent.

Households washing duvets and blankets at home

You want to wash bulky textiles regularly without using an external service. A 12 to 15 kg capacity becomes worthwhile when these thick items are frequently put in the machine and you have enough installation space.

Households switching between small and large loads

You have substantial family laundry loads, but also wash sportswear, delicates or smaller quantities. Look for documented load-management features and compare the consumption figures shown on each model’s energy label.

Key buying criteria

Start with the loads you actually wash, then check the comparable figures on the energy label and the installation requirements before opting for a larger drum.

Priority What to check Your needs
Usable capacity Capacity in kg of dry laundry for cotton or Eco 40-60; maximum load for synthetic, wool, jeans and duvet programmes; instructions in the manual. I want to avoid running multiple cycles while keeping a drum suited to my usual laundry loads. For a household of 3 to 4 people, Que Choisir indicates that an 8 to 9 kg capacity is generally sufficient; 10 to 12 kg makes more sense when large loads are a regular occurrence.
Water and electricity kWh per 100 Eco 40-60 cycles; litres per cycle; how load adjustment works on the specific model. I compare like-for-like indicators rather than assuming that a larger drum will use less. Load detection is worth considering if you often wash smaller loads.
Noise and spin cycle Decibels and noise class on the label; spin-drying efficiency class; duration of the Eco 40-60 programme. The washing machine runs frequently and I want to minimise disruption during the spin cycle. A good spin-drying efficiency class is also useful if clothes are dried indoors or put in a tumble dryer.
Durability and maintenance Durability rating out of 10; details of the score; filter access; warranty terms and spare-parts availability. My appliance will be used heavily, so I want to be able to maintain it and keep it running for longer. In France, the ministry responsible for ecology states that the durability rating has applied to washing machines since 8 April 2025.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing capacity based solely on the number of people

The stated capacity does not apply to every type of textile: the maximum loads for synthetic, jeans and wool programmes are lower than those for cotton or Eco 40-60. A large drum therefore will not necessarily solve the problem of smaller loads sorted by fabric.

For a few weeks, note how often you have full laundry baskets, bedding, towels, duvets and delicate cycles. Then check the load table in the manual, particularly for the duvet programme.

  • Assuming that an XL washing machine always reduces consumption

A large capacity does not automatically mean lower consumption: an appliance that is too large and frequently underfilled may use more water and electricity than necessary.

Compare the kWh per 100 cycles and litres per cycle shown on the energy label. Increase the capacity when large loads are usual; if smaller loads are more common, look for a standard capacity or documented load-management features.

An oversized drum that is rarely full can increase water and electricity consumption over time.

  • Overlooking the actual footprint and delivery access

Large-capacity front-loading machines are often still close to 60 cm wide, but their depth, door opening, packaging and access route may prevent installation.

Check the product and packaging dimensions, door clearance, access to the room, water inlet, drainage and access to the filter before ordering.

An access route that is too narrow can complicate delivery or require changes to the installation space.

  • Comparing only the purchase price

In a family household, a washing machine is used heavily. The durability rating and information about spare parts help you assess the maintenance options beyond the commercial warranty.

Compare the displayed durability rating, its breakdown, the warranty terms and the spare-parts availability information for your chosen model.

Brand guide

Bosch

Worth considering for 10 kg front-loading washing machines with features for managing smaller loads, depending on the specifications of the model in question.

  • For the WGB254A0FR, Bosch lists Active Water Plus and a 10 kg drum.
  • The specifications, availability, energy label and warranty must be checked for the model you ultimately choose.

LG

Worth considering for some large-capacity front-loading models with relatively compact dimensions.

  • LG’s F14R50WHS product sheet lists an 11 kg capacity, dimensions of 600 × 850 × 565 mm, load detection and a duvet programme.
  • These figures apply specifically to the F14R50WHS and do not automatically describe other LG washing machines.

Samsung

Worth considering for 11 kg front-loading models with connected tracking or energy-management features, provided the household has the necessary digital set-up.

  • Samsung’s product sheet for the WW11DG6B25LE model lists a width of 600 mm, a height of 850 mm and a depth of 600 mm.
  • Connected features may require Wi-Fi, an app and an account; compare the energy label across models.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 10 or 12 kg capacity wash any duvet?

No. The capacity in kg refers to a standard load of dry laundry, mainly associated with cotton or Eco 40-60. Check the manual for the duvet programme and maximum permitted load, as well as the duvet label: a thick duvet may still be too bulky even if its weight appears suitable.

What measurements should I take before ordering a family washing machine?

Measure the installation space, doors, hallways and lift, then check the model’s width, height, overall depth and door clearance. Front-loading machines are commonly around 60 cm wide and 85 cm high, but their depth varies according to the capacity and model.

Which figures on the energy label should I compare?

Compare the energy class from A to G, kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, Eco 40-60 duration, spin-drying efficiency class and noise. These indicators relate to the reference programme and do not, on their own, describe the consumption of your quick, delicate or intensive cycles.

Is the repairability rating still the right benchmark for a new washing machine in France?

For washing machines, the durability rating replaced the repairability rating on 8 April 2025, according to the ministry responsible for ecology. This score out of 10 takes repairability into account, along with criteria relating in particular to reliability, spare parts, maintenance and resistance to wear.

Can I have my old washing machine taken away free of charge?

Yes. The DGCCRF states that retailers must take back used equipment free of charge; when buying a new appliance, the collection of an equivalent appliance is specifically provided for. Check the practical arrangements for collection, particularly for an online order and home delivery, before completing your purchase.
