Homes without a usable external vent
If there is no suitable external duct, look for a hood designed for recirculation. Check the model number of the required filter or kit and the maintenance instructions before choosing a model.
If your home has a dedicated external duct that is compatible with the instructions, extraction mode vents cooking air outside. Otherwise, choose a hood designed for recirculation and check which filter is compatible with its model number: filtered air is returned to the room, and the filters need regular maintenance. You can then choose the hood’s shape to suit your hob’s location.

Extraction may be an option if the duct and air supply meet the requirements in the instructions. This mode directs extracted air outside, which is especially worth considering if removing steam is a priority for you.
A hob beneath a cabinet, against a wall or on an island won’t suit the same type of hood. In an open-plan kitchen, also compare the extraction rate and noise level in the mode and at the speed you expect to use.
First work out which mode is possible in your home. Then compare models in that mode before choosing their shape and filters.
Consider this if: you can use a dedicated external duct in accordance with the instructions, and venting cooking air outside is a priority.
Bear in mind: you’ll need a suitable air supply and must meet the duct installation requirements. A shared air outlet should not be mistaken for a dedicated duct.
Consider this if: suitable external extraction isn’t possible and the hood supports recirculation.
Bear in mind: filtered air is returned to the kitchen. The charcoal filter compatible with your model needs to be maintained or replaced as directed in the instructions.
| Criterion | What to check | What I need |
|---|---|---|
| Suitability for your home | Whether there is a dedicated external vent or the model supports recirculation; installation requirements in the instructions. | I want to rule out hoods that won’t work with my kitchen setup. |
| Cooking air | The mode in which the specifications are given; the grease filter and, for recirculation, the compatible charcoal filter. UFC-Que Choisir tests the two modes separately in its test protocol. | Steam is a concern when I cook frequently. I’ll check whether air can be vented outside rather than assuming both modes work in the same way. |
| Extraction rate and noise | Extraction rate and noise level in the mode you plan to use, at comparable speeds; the size of your kitchen and whether it opens onto the living area. | In an open-plan kitchen, I want to be able to use a suitable speed without relying solely on the stated maximum figure. |
| Recirculation filters | The model number of the compatible filter or kit, whether it’s included, availability, and replacement or regeneration instructions. | If I choose recirculation, I want to be able to maintain the specific model I buy. |
| Hob location | Dimensions and installation requirements for a built-in, wall-mounted or island hood; the modes permitted for that setup. | My hob needs a hood that suits its location. I don’t want its appearance to determine how it is installed. |
A wall-mounted, built-in or island hood won’t, by itself, solve the problem of having no external vent.
First check which mode is possible in your home, then look at the hood styles and accessories compatible with it.
In France, Article 14 of the order of 24 March 1982, published on Légifrance, states that a motorised hood cannot be connected to a shared mechanical or natural-draught air outlet system.
Ask a professional to identify the outlet in your home before considering an extraction hood. Don’t assume it is suitable for a connection.
UFC-Que Choisir’s test protocol measures extraction rate with a charcoal filter in recirculation mode and without one in extraction mode. So a figure on its own may not reflect the setup you’ll use.
Compare extraction rates and noise levels in the same mode and at comparable speeds, taking your kitchen layout into account.
In recirculation mode, the model number of the charcoal filter or kit, as well as its maintenance requirements, can vary from one hood to another.
Note down the exact model number of the accessories you need and check the instructions for replacement or regeneration guidance.
Siemens offers recirculation kits and filters. Check which ones are suitable for your hood’s model number.
Electrolux France provides information on maintaining recirculation filters, which you can check for each model number.
Roblin offers wall-mounted, built-in and island hoods, along with information on both operating modes.
These 60 or 90 cm hoods are listed as suitable for extraction and recirculation. Compare them based on your hob’s location, the mode available in your home and the accessories required.

Designed for a hob against a wall, this model is listed as suitable for extraction and recirculation. It has a stated extraction rate of 580 m³/h and three speeds. Check which filters are needed for recirculation, along with the installation dimensions.

This 90 cm wall-mounted hood is worth considering for a recirculation installation. It has a stated extraction rate of 650 m³/h and four speeds, including a booster function. Check which filters are compatible with this model and how to maintain them.

This 60 cm model is listed as suitable for extraction and recirculation, and includes an active charcoal filter. It has a stated extraction rate of 400 m³/h and three speeds. The product description says it must be installed by qualified professionals. Check the installation requirements and filter maintenance instructions in the manual.

This 90 cm angled hood is listed as suitable for extraction and recirculation. It has an extraction rate of 620 m³/h, a noise level of 59 dB and four speeds. If you plan to use recirculation, check which filter or kit is compatible and whether it’s included.
In France, no: Article 14 of the order of 24 March 1982, published on Légifrance, covers shared mechanical and natural-draught air outlet systems. Have the outlet in your home identified before planning any connection.
It offers a different way of operating, but it doesn’t vent air outside: the air passes through the filters and is then returned to the room. If external extraction isn’t possible, check that the hood supports recirculation and that its charcoal filter is compatible.
How often depends on the filter and how much you use it. Electrolux states that its OdourClean Standard ECFB01ST filter lasts 4 to 6 months. For other filters, follow the instructions for the filter and the hood’s maintenance guidance.
Before choosing an extraction hood, check the air supply and the instructions for the appliances concerned. Electrolux warns that extraction without a suitable air inlet can affect a fuel-burning appliance that relies on room air, such as a stove, fireplace or gas water heater.
