Who is this guide for?

You’re replacing an integrated appliance

If you’re keeping your kitchen and its cabinet door, measure the housing space and check how the door panel is attached and how the dishwasher door opens before comparing programmes.

You’re planning a kitchen with a seamless look

A fully integrated model can help maintain a uniform look across your cabinets. Choose the appliance, cabinet door and hinges together at the design stage to make sure the door opens properly.

You have a narrow housing space

The available width determines which size you can consider. Then compare the stated capacity of 45 cm models with the amount of washing-up you usually have.

What should you check before buying?

For a fitted kitchen, start with the cabinet space and door-fitting system, then choose the control-panel style and a capacity that suits your needs. These priorities apply whether you’re replacing an appliance or planning a new installation.

Consideration What to check What matters to shoppers
Housing space, cabinet door and hinges Measure the usable width, height and depth. Check the cabinet door and its fixing system against the installation diagram for the exact model. If I’m keeping my cabinets, I want the door to open without catching and the appliance to fit the space; around 36% of shoppers put this compatibility first.
Control-panel integration Choose between controls concealed along the top edge of the door and a visible control panel. Check which part of the appliance needs a cabinet door fitted. A seamless cabinet front matters more to me than having the controls permanently visible, or I’d rather be able to see the control panel. This integration choice is a priority for around 29% of shoppers.
Width and capacity Check whether the housing space can accommodate a 45 cm or 60 cm model, then compare the stated place settings of the models you’re considering. When kitchen space is limited, I need to balance the available width with the amount of washing-up; around 21% of shoppers make this their priority.
Installation work Check who will supply and fit the cabinet door, adapt the cabinetry and carry out the necessary connections. When replacing an appliance, I want to know who’ll take care of the door panel and any adjustments so I can plan the installation; this is the main concern for around 14% of shoppers.

Integration mistakes to avoid

  • Relying on the stated width alone

Two appliances sold as 60 cm models can have different heights. Bosch, for example, lists the SMV4ECX28F as 815 mm high and the SBH4HVX14E as 865 mm high. So the advertised width doesn’t confirm that all the installation dimensions will fit.

Compare your housing measurements with the installation diagram for the exact model. Don’t assume it will fit just because your old appliance did.

  • Assuming a matching cabinet door will fit any appliance door

The cabinet door and appliance door need to work together. Depending on the model, the fitting may use fixed or sliding hinges.

Check the required system in the instructions. For an Electrolux accessory, in particular, check compatibility using the appliance’s PNC.

You may need a linking kit or a suitable hinge, depending on the cabinet door and model.

  • Assuming installation includes fitting the cabinet door

Positioning and connecting an appliance doesn’t necessarily include fitting its cabinet door or adapting the cabinetry. Electrolux, for example, excludes this work from its pre-installation service for integrated appliances.

Ask for a written description of the work included, from supplying the cabinet door to any necessary adjustments and connections.

  • Comparing energy use before confirming the size

Comparing appliances with different capacities won’t help you choose a model that fits your space and suits the amount of washing-up you have.

Once you’ve settled on a size, check the energy label and compare appliances on a like-for-like basis, including the Eco programme figures and capacity.

Brands to consider for this project

Bosch

Bosch offers integrated dishwashers in 45 cm and 60 cm widths, including fully integrated models and standard-height or XXL options.

  • The specifications for the SMV4ECX28F and SBH4HVX14E show the difference in appliance height. The brand also offers fixed and sliding hinge systems.
  • Check the height and door system for each model and make sure they work with the cabinet door you plan to use.

Siemens

Siemens offers fully integrated and semi-integrated models in 45 cm and 60 cm widths.

  • The range gives you the choice of a cabinet door that conceals the appliance or a model with visible controls.
  • Some models feature a hinge solution such as varioHinge, but this alone doesn’t confirm compatibility with a particular cabinet door.

Electrolux

Electrolux offers fully integrated models in 45 cm widths, including the EES42210L, which is rated for 9 place settings and supplied without a cabinet door.

  • The brand offers a sliding hinge, and you can check compatibility using the appliance’s PNC.
  • The installation service described by Electrolux doesn’t include carpentry, fitting the cabinet door or plumbing and electrical work.

Frequently asked questions

What should I measure before buying an integrated dishwasher?

Measure the usable width, height and depth of the housing space, then compare these with the installation diagram for the model you’re considering. Also check the cabinet door dimensions and fixings, and how the appliance door opens. Bosch, for example, distinguishes between fixed and sliding hinge systems.

What’s the difference between fully integrated and semi-integrated?

A fully integrated dishwasher conceals the controls behind the cabinet door, while a semi-integrated model has a visible control panel above the covered section. In both cases, check that the housing space and cabinet door are suitable for your chosen model.

Should I choose a 45 cm or 60 cm model?

First, choose a size that fits the width of your housing space, then select a capacity that suits your washing-up. Que Choisir generally lists 9 to 10 place settings for 45 cm integrated models and 12 to 17 for 60 cm models. These widths don’t replace the need to check the other installation dimensions.

Does installation always include fitting the cabinet door?

No. Check exactly what’s included before booking installation. Electrolux states that its installation service for integrated appliances doesn’t include carpentry, fitting and covering the appliance door, or plumbing and electrical work.

How should I use the energy label to compare two models?

First compare appliances with a size and capacity that suit your needs, then check their labels on a like-for-like basis. The European Commission states that the energy label for household dishwashers has used an A to G scale since 1 March 2021. Also check the information on the Eco programme, water use and noise.
