Who is it for?

Replacing an integrated dishwasher in an existing kitchen

If you are keeping the niche, plinth or door panel, check the actual measurements and fixing system before comparing programmes. UFC-Que Choisir, Bosch Electroménager France and manufacturers' installation information all highlight the importance of these compatibilities.

Designing a new fitted kitchen

You can coordinate the appliance type, door panel, worktop height and plinth from the outset. The choice between fully integrated and semi-integrated depends first on the look you want for the kitchen front and how easily you need to access the controls.

Installing an appliance without a compatible niche

A freestanding model is a better fit for a space without a suitable niche. It already has its own door, top and side panels, although the required connections will still need to be provided.

Buying priorities

Fully integrated

Choose this if: you want the appliance to disappear behind a door panel matching the rest of the cabinetry, and the niche, plinth and door system are compatible.

Bear in mind: the door panel must be supplied or kept separately and fitted securely.

Semi-integrated

Choose this if: a niche and furniture door are provided, but you want to keep the controls visible on the front panel.

Check: you must still verify the niche, compatible door panel and instructions for the model you choose.

Freestanding

Choose this if: the project includes neither a suitable niche nor a kitchen door panel to fit.

Bear in mind: it will not have the look of a continuous kitchen front. If it is going under a worktop, also check the top panel and dimensions.

Check compatibility with the cabinet before considering washing functions: an advertised width alone is not enough to confirm that the appliance can be integrated.

Priority What to check Your needs
Niche compatibility Width, height under the worktop and usable depth; standard or XXL format; access to water, electricity and drainage. I want to avoid ordering an appliance that cannot be integrated into the existing space.
Door panel, plinth and hinge Fixed or sliding door; plinth height; the permitted weight, dimensions and fixing points for the door panel. My door panel must open without catching on the plinth or cabinet. Bosch's plinth guidance applies to its own door solutions.
Level of integration Fully integrated with concealed controls; semi-integrated with a visible front panel; freestanding with its own exterior. I want to choose between a uniform kitchen front and visible controls, without confusing an integrated appliance with a freestanding model.
Installation and finishing Connections, levelling, door-panel fitting, plinth installation and removal of the old appliance; the written scope of the service. I want to know whether the quote covers connections only or also the door panel, plinth and finishing touches.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Looking only at the 60 cm or 45 cm width

Width alone does not confirm the height under the worktop, the depth or whether the door panel can pass in front of the plinth. Standard and XXL formats may require different niches.

Measure the complete niche and compare it with the installation diagram for the exact model before ordering. Also keep a record of the plinth and door-panel measurements.

  • Confusing a fixed door with a sliding door

A fixed door remains attached to the appliance door, whereas a door panel on sliding hinges moves as the door opens. The door system therefore affects the clearance around the plinth.

Identify the system used in your kitchen and consult the installation diagram for the model you have chosen. Do not automatically apply the limits given for one brand to another.

The plinth may need adapting, or joinery work may be required, if the movement of the door panel is not compatible.

  • Assuming installation includes the door panel

A service may cover the connections without including the fitting of the decorative door or installation of the plinth. The finishing work may therefore need to be arranged separately.

Before paying, ask for a written scope specifying removal, connections, levelling, door-panel fitting, plinth installation, testing and removal of the old appliance.

  • Choosing an integrated model for a space without a niche

An integrated dishwasher is supplied without a door panel, top or side panels, so it is not designed to stand on its own on the floor. UFC-Que Choisir distinguishes this type from a freestanding model that already has its own exterior.

Without a suitable niche and door panel, look for a freestanding model instead. For installation under a worktop, check that the top panel is removable and that the dimensions are suitable.

Creating an integrated installation may require a kitchen door panel and fitting work suited to the cabinetry.

Brand guide

Bosch

The French range includes 45 cm and 60 cm integrated models, with fully integrated dishwashers featuring standard or VarioHinge doors.

  • Bosch Electroménager France explains the differences between fixed and sliding doors, which is useful when the plinth is low.
  • The plinth thresholds and door-panel limits quoted for Bosch cannot be used to validate a model or door panel from another brand.

Electrolux

The French range includes 45 cm fully integrated models and 60 cm semi-integrated models with a visible front panel.

  • The product pages for the EES42210L and EES47310IX clearly distinguish the integration type, width and fact that no furniture door is supplied.
  • These examples do not prove that every Electrolux model accepts the same door panel or installation configuration.

Siemens

The French range offers integrated and fully integrated dishwashers in 45 cm, 60 cm and XXL sizes, depending on the product line.

  • The Siemens SX93E807CE combines a VarioHinge system with an 86.5 cm XXL format for slightly higher worktops.
  • The format and features specific to this model do not replace checking the niche, door panel and instructions for the model you choose.

Miele

The French range distinguishes between integrated, fully integrated and freestanding models, with 45 cm, 60 cm and XXL formats depending on the product line.

  • The brand's categories make it easier to identify the type of integration you need from the very start of the project.
  • An appliance category does not remove the need to check the niche dimensions, door panel and installation requirements for the exact model.

Frequently asked questions

What measurements should I take before replacing an integrated dishwasher?

Measure the width, height under the worktop, available depth, plinth height, the door panel's dimensions and weight, and the door fixing system. A width of 60 cm or 45 cm is not enough: the height, plinth and movement of the door panel may make an appliance incompatible.

Can I reuse the door panel from my old dishwasher?

Yes, but only if the new model's installation plan confirms compatibility. Check the door movement, fixing points, permitted weight, door-panel dimensions and its relationship with the plinth, as fixed and sliding doors work differently.

Will the installer also fit the door panel and plinth?

Do not assume so. UFC-Que Choisir states that a service may cover the connections without including the door panel or plinth installation. Ask for written confirmation distinguishing connections, levelling, door-panel fitting and finishing work.

Which connections are needed in the niche?

Installation requires a water supply, an electrical supply and a waste-water outlet. The appliance must also be level, and the connections must remain accessible.

What should I do with my old dishwasher in France?

When buying a new appliance of the same type, the French Ministry responsible for ecology states that a “one-for-one” take-back service is available. Check the practical arrangements with the seller, particularly whether the appliance needs to be removed from its niche before collection.
