Who are these solutions for?

Households drying clothes in a small home

If your airer takes up a room for a long time, spin efficiency is an important factor to consider when choosing a washing machine. ADEME links it to the time needed to dry clothes indoors.

People who want to tumble-dry without an external vent

A condenser tumble dryer means you don’t need an external vent, according to UFC-Que Choisir. You’ll still need to check the available space, capacity, programme times and noise level of the model you’re considering.

Households using an airer in a damp room

You could use a dehumidifier near the airer to help. It removes water from the air, while ventilation in your home refreshes the air and also removes pollutants, as France Rénov’ explains.

What should you check first?

Start by deciding how you want to dry your clothes — on an airer or in a tumble dryer — then check what your room can accommodate and what will work for you day to day.

Priority What to check What I need
Spin efficiency Check the spin efficiency class and choose a washing machine capacity that suits your usual loads. ADEME recommends spin efficiency class A when clothes need to dry quickly indoors. I’m keeping my airer, but I’d like my clothes to come out of the wash with less water to evaporate.
Installation Check the space, connections and water drainage requirements in the instruction manual. According to UFC-Que Choisir, a condenser tumble dryer doesn’t need an external vent, unlike a vented model. To get dry clothes from a tumble dryer, I need to be able to install it in the available room without assuming there’s an external vent.
Cycles and energy use On the current tumble dryer energy label, compare the kWh per 100 eco programme cycles, capacity, cycle time and noise level. GIFAM says this label has been displayed since 1 July 2025. If I use a tumble dryer often, I want to know both its stated energy use and how long the programme being compared takes.
Room humidity For a dehumidifier, check the conditions used to calculate its stated extraction capacity, the tank size and whether continuous drainage is possible. Keep your ventilation working properly: France Rénov’ explains that its role is to refresh the air. My clothes stay on an airer in a damp room; I’m looking for an appliance to help, without mistaking it for a tumble dryer or ventilation.

What should you avoid?

  • Choosing a vented tumble dryer without planning for an air outlet

Unlike a condenser appliance, a vented model must expel moist air outside, UFC-Que Choisir points out.

Before choosing this type, check the required connection in the instruction manual and make sure it suits the room. If there’s no suitable outlet, consider condenser models instead.

  • Comparing only the letters on two different energy labels

GIFAM says a new energy label has been displayed on tumble dryers since 1 July 2025. So an old rating letter isn’t enough to compare two models.

On current labels, look in particular at the energy use in kWh per 100 eco programme cycles, the programme time and the capacity.

  • Looking only at a dehumidifier’s litres per day figure

The extraction figure depends on the conditions specified by the manufacturer. For example, De’Longhi states that its DDSX225 extracts 25 L/24 h at 30 °C and 80 % relative humidity; this figure alone doesn’t tell you how it will perform in a different room.

Check the test conditions, then look at the features that matter near your airer, such as the tank and continuous drainage.

  • Stacking two appliances without checking they’re compatible

UFC-Que Choisir recommends front-loading appliances of similar dimensions, with the tumble dryer on top of the washing machine.

Check the manuals for dimensions, weight limits and the stacking kit required, then make sure the floor is stable.

A few brands to know

Bosch

In France, Bosch offers 8 and 9 kg heat pump tumble dryers, depending on the model.

  • For the WQG13500FR, Bosch lists a half-load option, a wool basket and a 40-minute programme for small loads of synthetics or delicate fabrics.
  • Check the details for the specific model: these features aren’t available across the entire range.

Beko

Beko’s French catalogue includes heat pump tumble dryers, with some models listed at 10 kg.

  • The brand offers IronFinish on some models; check whether it’s included and which programmes it works with.
  • To compare energy use and cycle time, refer to the label for the model you’re considering rather than general claims about the range.

Miele

Miele offers 8 and 9 kg T1 heat pump tumble dryers, with features varying by model.

  • The catalogue lists Miele@home and SteamCare on some models.
  • A feature listed for the range may not be available on the model you’re considering: check its product details and programmes.

De’Longhi

De’Longhi’s range includes the DDSX225 dehumidifier, which has a laundry mode and continuous drainage according to its product details.

  • The brand states that this model extracts 25 L/24 h at 30 °C and 80 % relative humidity.
  • This figure is based on these test conditions and doesn’t determine how long clothes will take to dry in your room.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use a vented tumble dryer in a room without an external outlet?

No: a vented model must expel moist air outside. For a room without this connection, UFC-Que Choisir says you can install a condenser tumble dryer without an external vent; then check the other requirements in its instruction manual.

What should you compare on a tumble dryer’s energy label?

Look in particular at the energy use in kWh per 100 eco programme cycles, the capacity, the programme time and the noise level. GIFAM says a new label has been displayed since 1 July 2025: compare figures for models assessed using the same system, not just their rating letters.

Does a dehumidifier replace ventilation in your home?

No. It removes moisture from the room’s air, while ventilation refreshes the air and also removes pollutants, as France Rénov’ explains. If the damp persists, check that your ventilation is working rather than relying solely on an additional appliance.

Can you put a tumble dryer on top of a washing machine to save space?

Yes, if the appliances and their installation are compatible. UFC-Que Choisir recommends front-loading appliances of similar dimensions, with the tumble dryer on top. Also check the manuals for the stacking kit, weight limits and flooring requirements.

What should you check when maintaining an appliance used near clothes?

For a tumble dryer, check the instruction manual for how to clean the filters and manage the collected water. For a dehumidifier, check how to empty the tank or the requirements for continuous drainage: these tasks depend on the model and how it’s installed.
