Who are these solutions for?

People living in a small home

If there isn’t room for another appliance, compare how much space an airer takes up while your laundry dries with how compact it is when folded away. If you dry laundry in the room, also check how well it can be ventilated, in line with ADEME’s advice.

Households that do frequent or large loads of washing

A tumble dryer can save you from leaving an airer up for a long time when drying sheets or towels. Drum capacity isn’t the only thing to consider, though: the location, water collection and maintenance all need to suit how you plan to use it.

People who keep an airer in a damp room

A dehumidifier can remove moisture from the air while your laundry dries, but you’ll still need to hang the clothes out. Choose one to suit the room and how you’ll empty its tank. As ADEME reminds us, ventilation in your home is still essential.

What should you compare before choosing?

Start with where your laundry will dry, then compare each option with the size of your loads and the tasks it involves day to day.

Priority What to check Your needs
Humidity and ventilation With a standard or heated airer, check the room and how well the air circulates. A dehumidifier works alongside an airer but doesn’t replace ventilation; a condenser tumble dryer collects water according to the model’s specifications. For air-drying, ADEME recommends a large, well-ventilated room or one with mechanical ventilation extraction. I want to dry my laundry without relying on an appliance to make up for poor ventilation.
Space and laundry load Compare a tumble dryer’s capacity in kg with its installation dimensions. For an airer, check its maximum load and how much space it takes up both open and folded. For a dehumidifier, compare the stated room size with the room where you’ll use it. Can I leave an airer open at home, or do I need to set aside a permanent spot for a machine? My usual loads also need to fit the equipment I choose.
Electricity and drying time When comparing similar tumble dryers, check the energy use in kWh/100 cycles alongside the relevant capacity and programme. For an electric airer, consider its power in W alongside how long it will actually be on: power alone doesn’t tell you how much electricity it will use per load. If I do several loads in a row, I want to compare running time and energy use on a like-for-like basis, rather than choosing based on a single energy rating or power figure.
Water and maintenance Check how easy it is to access the tank and, if you want continuous drainage, whether the model and location support a suitable connection. Also check how easy it is to reach the filter and follow the instructions for maintaining the tumble dryer’s condenser. I’d like to know how often I’ll need to empty a tank or clean a filter before choosing an appliance.

What can make drying more difficult day to day?

  • Relying on a dehumidifier instead of ventilation

A dehumidifier can remove moisture from the air, but your laundry will still be hanging in the room. ADEME says that indoor air-drying releases a lot of moisture, and that ventilation helps remove moisture from your home.

Think about where you’ll actually hang your laundry. ADEME recommends a large, well-ventilated space or a room with mechanical ventilation extraction.

  • Forgetting where the collected water will go

Emptying a tank and using direct drainage involve different routines and installation requirements. Whether you can use a hose depends on the model.

Before choosing a tumble dryer or dehumidifier, check how easy it is to reach the tank, whether a hose or kit is included, and where the water will drain.

  • Assuming an airer’s power rating tells you how much electricity it uses per load

The power rating in watts doesn’t tell you how long the airer will run. Your laundry will also continue to dry in the room’s air.

Compare the power rating with the timer and the intended running time, then check that the room is suitable for air-drying.

  • Overlooking access to the filter and condenser

Maintenance is part of using a tumble dryer. For the appliances covered by its guidance, Electrolux recommends cleaning the filter after every cycle.

Before buying, check the model’s instructions to find out what maintenance is required, and make sure you’ll be able to reach the parts that need cleaning.

Which brands and ranges should you consider?

Beko

Beko offers several tumble dryer technologies, including heat-pump, condenser and vented models.

  • According to Beko, condenser and heat-pump models collect water without a vent to the outside, unlike vented models.
  • Check the cycle times, maintenance requirements and installation conditions for the specific model, rather than relying on the technology alone.

Bosch

The WQG2450SFR is an example of the large-capacity heat-pump tumble dryers in Bosch’s range.

  • Bosch lists a maximum capacity of 9 kg and dimensions of 842 × 598 × 613 mm for the WQG2450SFR. These details can help you check whether the load size and installation space are right for you.
  • Bosch says spare parts for its tumble dryers are generally available for up to 15 years. Check availability for the model you’re considering.

Electrolux

The EDHF5841EC product details let you assess a heat-pump tumble dryer using information specific to that model.

  • Electrolux lists energy use of 128 kWh/100 cycles for the EDHF5841EC. Consider this alongside the other specifications and conditions on the product page.
  • The EDHF5841EC’s specifications don’t represent the whole range. Check how the model you buy collects water and what maintenance it requires.

Rowenta

Rowenta presents the DH5260F0 as a dehumidifier that can be used while drying laundry on an airer.

  • Rowenta lists a removable 3 L tank or a 1 m hose for continuous drainage, depending on your chosen setup.
  • A stated dehumidification capacity on its own can’t tell you how long laundry will take to dry in your room, and it doesn’t remove the need for suitable ventilation.

Tumble dryers and dehumidifiers on Joybuy

These options offer two ways to organise indoor laundry drying: use a tumble dryer, or keep using an airer and run a dehumidifier in the room. The right choice depends in part on the space you have and how you’ll manage the water.

Frequently asked questions

Can a dehumidifier replace ventilation or a mechanical ventilation system?

No. It can remove moisture from the air while your laundry dries on an airer, but it doesn’t refresh the air in your home in place of suitable ventilation. For indoor air-drying, ADEME recommends a large, well-ventilated room or one with mechanical ventilation extraction.

When should you consider a vented tumble dryer?

Only consider one if you can install it with the vent duct leading outside, in line with the model’s instructions. If that isn’t possible, look at a condenser or heat-pump model and check how its condensed water will be collected or drained.

What should you measure before buying a tumble dryer?

Measure the space and access routes, then check the clearances required in the instructions. Next, compare the capacity, dimensions, noise level and access to the tank or drainage outlet for the specific model. As a guide to dimensions, Bosch lists its 9 kg WQG2450SFR as 842 × 598 × 613 mm.

What maintenance does a condenser or heat-pump tumble dryer need?

Follow the appliance instructions for cleaning the filter and, where accessible, the condenser. Electrolux recommends cleaning the filter after every cycle in its maintenance guidance. Before buying, check that these parts will be easy to reach where you plan to install the appliance.
