Which households is it for?

Households that mainly dry clothes on an indoor airer

To reduce drying time without adding a tumble dryer, look at spin performance, the amount of laundry you actually wash, noise levels and room ventilation. ADEME recommends spin-drying efficiency class A to help clothes dry more quickly indoors.

Households that do laundry frequently

A separate tumble dryer can make your routine more predictable if you have the space. Compare its capacity, weighted energy consumption per cycle, noise level, eco programme duration and condensation efficiency as shown on the label and in EPREL.

People with space for just one appliance

A washer-dryer combines both functions in a single appliance. However, check the full-cycle capacity: it may be lower than the washing capacity, as highlighted by EPREL and UFC-Que Choisir.

Buying priorities

Washing machine and indoor airer

Choose this if: you have a large, well-ventilated room or one with an extractor, and drying on an airer suits your routine.

Bear in mind: wet laundry remains a source of indoor humidity; this solution is less suitable for a poorly ventilated room or when you need dry clothes quickly.

Separate heat-pump tumble dryer

Choose this if: you regularly dry full loads and can install a separate appliance next to the washing machine or in a compatible stacked arrangement.

Bear in mind: this solution takes up more space, but keeps washing and drying separate.

Washer-dryer

Choose this if: you only have space for one appliance and your drying loads match the stated capacity for the full cycle.

Bear in mind: a full washing load may need to be removed or split before drying.

Priority What to check Your needs
Humidity and drying time Spin-drying efficiency class, room ventilation and, for a tumble dryer, condensation efficiency. I want to avoid wet laundry remaining in the home for a long time. Anses advises drying it outdoors if possible, or in a well-ventilated room.
Usable capacity Washing capacity, drying capacity and, for a washer-dryer, full-cycle capacity. My routine needs to match the amount of laundry that actually builds up. With a two-in-one appliance, I check that the drying load is sufficient to avoid running multiple half-loads.
Comparing cycles Compare like with like: energy, water, duration, noise and capacity, within the same labelling system. I want to compare appliances on a consistent basis. Washing-only data does not, by itself, answer the question of a wash-and-dry cycle.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Relying solely on the number of revolutions per minute

Spin speed is not a substitute for spin-drying efficiency class. For indoor drying, the label helps you compare spin performance while also taking noise and energy consumption into account.

Prioritise spin-drying efficiency class first, then check the noise level, capacity and energy consumption of the same model.

  • Assuming a washer-dryer dries the entire load it has washed

EPREL distinguishes between washing capacity and full wash-and-dry cycle capacity. This difference may mean that some laundry needs to be removed before drying starts.

Note the two capacities separately, then compare the energy, water and duration of the full cycle.

An oversized load can result in half-loads, extra time and additional drying cycles.

  • Drying clothes on an airer in a poorly ventilated room

ADEME states that air-drying laundry is an activity that releases a significant amount of moisture indoors.

Reserve this solution for a well-ventilated room, ideally one that is large or fitted with an extractor, and rethink your drying arrangements if this is not possible.

  • Comparing old and new energy classes

Different labelling scales should not be treated as equivalent. The European Commission states that new domestic tumble dryers placed on the EU market have used the A to G label since 1 July 2025.

Compare appliances within the same labelling system and use the corresponding figures for energy, water, noise, duration and capacity.

Brand guide

Bosch

According to its official range, Bosch offers 8 and 9 kg heat-pump tumble dryers in France.

  • Depending on the model, the brand features AutoDry functions, options for smaller loads and a self-cleaning condenser.
  • These features are Bosch’s own claims: compare the label, dimensions and noise level of the exact model.

Miele

Miele sells 8 and 9 kg heat-pump tumble dryers in France for shoppers looking for a separate appliance.

  • Miele describes its T1 range as using heat-pump technology, with features that vary by model.
  • Check the capacity, energy consumption, noise level and programmes on the product page for your chosen model.

LG

LG offers heat-pump tumble dryers as well as washer-dryers in France, allowing you to compare a separate appliance with a two-in-one solution.

  • Some models from the brand are presented with sensors or a self-cleaning condenser.
  • When comparing current appliances, prioritise the regulatory A to G label and the model’s EPREL data over an old A++ rating.

Frequently asked questions

Which figures on the label should I compare for a washing machine intended for indoor drying?

Compare the spin-drying efficiency class, energy in kWh per 100 cycles, water per cycle, reference programme duration and spin noise level. ADEME states that spin-drying class A is particularly useful when laundry needs to dry quickly indoors.

Can I dry laundry in any room?

No. Choose a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with an extractor. Anses recommends drying laundry outdoors if possible, or in a well-ventilated room.

Why should I check a washer-dryer’s drying capacity separately?

The capacity of a full wash-and-dry cycle may be lower than the washing-only capacity. EPREL gives the example of an appliance rated at 7 kg for the full cycle and 13 kg for washing: a full load may therefore need to be split before drying.

Which energy label applies to new tumble dryers?

Since 1 July 2025, new domestic tumble dryers placed on the European Union market have used an A to G energy label, according to the European Commission. Compare the figures on this label with the corresponding EPREL product sheet where available.

How can I factor durability into choosing a washing machine in France?

Since April 2025, the relevant new washing machines sold in France have had to display a durability index, according to ADEME. Check it alongside the capacity, energy, water and noise data.
