Who are these solutions suitable for?

Tenants or homeowners without a usable balcony

You usually dry clothes on an indoor airer and need to balance humidity, drying time and electricity consumption. ADEME recommends using a large, well-ventilated room or one equipped with suitable extraction for this purpose.

Households doing frequent washes with room for two appliances

You need to dry several loads without keeping the washing machine tied up and have an additional space available. A heat-pump tumble dryer is then worth considering, depending on its capacity, dimensions and noise level.

People living in small homes with only one appliance space

You want to automate washing and drying without installing two machines. A washer-dryer meets this requirement, provided you accept that its drying capacity is lower than its washing capacity and that complete cycles take longer.

What to look for

Start by deciding whether air-drying can remain compatible with ventilation in the room, then compare the available space, how often you do laundry and the installation requirements.

Priority What to check Your needs
Humidity in the room Room size, whether ventilation is possible and whether suitable extraction is available. For a tumble dryer, also compare condensation efficiency and how the tank or drainage is managed. I want to limit the extra humidity created by drying clothes in a small room. The airer should therefore remain in a well-ventilated room; a dehumidifier can only complement this arrangement.
Energy use and duration For new tumble dryers, check the A to G energy label, weighted energy consumption per cycle and the duration of the Eco programme. Compare models using the same load and programme. I am looking for a balance between consistent drying and controlled energy use. Heat-pump technology reduces electricity consumption compared with older technologies, but programmes may take longer.
Available space Compare the washing and drying capacities separately, as well as the depth, door opening and access to connections. I only have room for one appliance. A washer-dryer avoids the need for a second machine, but a full washing load may need to be reduced before drying.
Maintenance and installation Check the noise level, access to the filters, the condensation tank or drain hose. For a stacked installation, check that the stacking kit is compatible with both appliances. I want to avoid forgotten maintenance tasks, excessive noise and an unsuitable installation. The French Ministry for Ecological Transition notably recommends emptying and cleaning the tank of a condenser appliance regularly.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a washer-dryer based solely on its washing capacity

Drying capacity is lower than washing capacity. A machine advertised as 10 kg may only dry 6 or 7 kg, meaning you must split the load or leave some clothes on an airer.

Always compare both figures, shown in the washing/drying format, and plan cycles according to the drying capacity.

  • Treating a dehumidifier as an answer to inadequate ventilation

Drying clothes indoors adds a lot of moisture to the air. A dehumidifier treats the air in the room, but does not replace the ventilation recommended for indoor drying.

Use it as a supplement near the airer. If marks, smells or persistent humidity also appear outside drying periods, have the situation assessed by a suitably qualified professional.

An unsuitable installation may lead to reinstallation costs or material damage.

Brand guide

Bosch

Worth considering for a separate heat-pump tumble dryer, such as the 8 kg WQG24502FR, when your home has room for a dedicated appliance.

  • For the WQG24502FR, Bosch lists a self-cleaning condenser, a half-load option, a noise level of 61 dB(A) and a water drain hose.
  • These features apply to this specific model. Its manual requires a manufacturer’s stacking kit for a stacked installation.

AEG

An option for smaller homes looking for a heat-pump washer-dryer rather than two separate appliances.

  • The LWR98B166X is listed with 10 kg washing capacity, 6 kg drying capacity and heat-pump technology.
  • Drying capacity remains lower than washing capacity; also compare the stated dimensions with the space actually available.

Whirlpool

Worth considering for high-capacity washer-dryers when one appliance needs to handle a substantial volume of laundry.

  • Whirlpool lists the FFDD1074489BVFR with a 10 kg washing capacity and 7 kg drying capacity, at a depth of 60.5 cm.
  • The product information for this model states energy class D for the relevant cycle; compare water and electricity use for the wash-dry cycle across models.

LG

A model worth examining if you want a heat-pump washer-dryer that combines space-saving design with advertised low-temperature drying.

  • LG presents the F164HP2BST as an 11/6 kg heat-pump washer-dryer with a complete cycle advertised as taking 150 minutes.
  • This duration depends on the programme and load. Check the energy label, dimensions and noise level before choosing.

Frequently asked questions

Is a tumble dryer essential if clothes already dry on an indoor airer?

No. ADEME recommends drying clothes indoors in a large, well-ventilated room or one equipped with suitable extraction. A tumble dryer becomes more useful when drying times, the volume of laundry or the space taken up by the airer no longer suit your home.

Why choose a heat-pump tumble dryer when buying new?

According to Que Choisir Ensemble, heat-pump tumble dryers use less electricity than older technologies. The European Commission states that, from 1 July 2025, only new domestic tumble dryers using this technology may be placed on the European Union market; the A to G energy label must be displayed in shops and online.

Can you dry a washer-dryer’s entire load immediately after washing?

Not always. Drying capacity is lower than washing capacity: the AEG and Whirlpool examples list 10/6 kg and 10/7 kg respectively. You will therefore often need to remove some of the laundry before starting the drying cycle.

Does a dehumidifier replace ventilation when clothes are drying in the room?

No. It can remove moisture from the room air, but French guidance for indoor drying still recommends a well-ventilated room or one equipped with suitable extraction. Use it as a supplement without stopping ventilation.

What should you check for installation and maintenance?

Check the full dimensions, door opening, required connections, noise level, condensation tank management and access to the filters. For a stacked installation, follow the model’s instructions: Bosch requires a manufacturer’s stacking kit for the relevant tumble dryer and rules out incompatible stacking.
