Who are these formats for?

Organisers with a capsule machine

If a NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto machine is already on site, capsules advertised as compatible let you prepare drinks one cup at a time. Check the exact system used by the machine before choosing a product.

Venues with a vending machine or powder-based machine

For regular service, look for a mix specifically intended for use in the equipment you have. A bag format alone doesn’t guarantee compatibility with every machine.

Buffets without a dedicated machine

With access to hot water, individual sachets to mix make it easy to prepare each cup without measuring out powder. You’ll still need to allow for enough portions and have a way to serve the water.

What should you check before buying?

For a conference, start with the equipment actually available, then make sure your chosen format suits the pace of service and check the information on the product you’ll be serving.

Criteria What to check Who is it for?
Portion-controlled service The capsule system, if you have a machine, and the number of portions per box. Between sessions, I want to serve each cup without measuring out powder. Around 42% of consumers prioritise this speed and pre-measured portions.
Service using professional equipment Whether the powder is intended for your machine and the recommended quantity for the product you’ve chosen. When service relies on an existing vending machine, my first priority is to keep the equipment suitably stocked. Around 33% of consumers prioritise compatibility with this type of service.
Drink ingredients Sugar content using the same basis for comparison, the prepared serving size and the allergens listed on the label. Before serving several attendees, I need to know what’s in the product actually being used. For around 25% of consumers, nutritional information and allergens come before other criteria.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing capsules, sachets to mix and vending-machine powder

These formats require different equipment. Don’t assume that a capsule advertised as compatible with Dolce Gusto will work in another machine.

Check the capsule system or type of vending machine on site. If there’s no dedicated machine, check the water-preparation instructions for the sachets you’ve chosen.

  • Relying on the Nutri-Score alone

According to the French Ministry of the Economy, displaying the Nutri-Score is voluntary in France. Whether or not it appears on the pack, you should still check the nutritional information and ingredients.

To compare sugar content, use the same basis for each product – for example, the prepared drink per serving or per 100 ml, where this information is available – and check the allergens on the packaging.

  • Assuming a tax applies based only on sugar content

Article 1613 ter of the French General Tax Code, published by Légifrance, applies to drinks and liquid preparations that meet the conditions set out in the text. Sugar listed on a powder label isn’t enough on its own to determine the product’s tax status.

If this classification affects your invoicing, ask your supplier or a suitably qualified adviser to check the product and how it is supplied.

  • Forgetting to check the allergens in the product you’re serving

The Nestlé Professional product sheets cited for NESQUIK capsules and Cacao Mix state that they contain milk. Different recipes and variants need to be checked separately.

Keep the label for the product delivered to hand and check its ingredient and allergen information before serving.

Brands to consider by format

Nesquik / NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto

A 16-capsule NESQUIK pack for venues that already have a NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto machine.

  • Nestlé Professional recommends preparing this product in a machine, for a 150 ml drink.
  • This product contains milk and is listed as compatible with the Dolce Gusto system.

Banania

Chocolate capsules that Banania advertises as compatible with NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto.

  • Banania describes the product shown as making a 120 ml drink per capsule.
  • This stated compatibility doesn’t automatically extend to other capsule systems. Check the ingredients on the pack you choose, too.

Nestlé Professional

Cacao Mix is a 1 kg bag of powder for making drinks and use in a machine.

  • The Nestlé Professional product sheet recommends mixing 20 g of powder with 12 cl of water at 75 °C.
  • This product contains milk. Its preparation instructions don’t confirm compatibility with every vending machine.

Monbana

Monbana offers Lacté 4 étoiles portions for buffets, as well as a separate Lacté bag for vending machines.

  • The Lacté 4 étoiles box is advertised as containing 50 individual 30 g portions to prepare with water.
  • The vending-machine format and buffet portions are designed for different equipment. Check the ingredients and allergens for the product you order.

Frequently asked questions

Will a hot chocolate capsule work in every pod machine?

No. The NESQUIK capsules featured by Nestlé Professional are made for a NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto machine, and Banania advertises its featured product as compatible with the same system. Check the model installed at the venue before buying.

Is Nutri-Score compulsory on drinking chocolate powder in France?

No. The French Ministry of the Economy confirms that displaying it is voluntary. The DGCCRF, however, states that a nutrition declaration is compulsory for prepacked foods, subject to applicable exceptions. Check the nutritional information for the product you choose.

Which allergens should you check before serving hot chocolate?

Check the ingredients and allergen information for each product you actually serve. The Nestlé Professional product sheets for NESQUIK capsules and Cacao Mix state that they contain milk. Don’t assume the same ingredients apply to another recipe or variant.
