What should you check before buying?
First, check the conditions of the support available at your address, then prioritise appliances according to the function you’re missing day to day. A fridge, washing machine or cooking appliance may come first, depending on what you already have. A dishwasher or vacuum cleaner meets a different need, and you should also confirm locally whether it’s eligible.

What to check |
Consumers concerned |
| Purchase approval |
Before placing an order, check with the relevant organisation which categories are eligible, what personal conditions apply, and which quote and retailer are approved. |
If my purchase depends on support, I need to know which appliance and retailer will be accepted before I commit; around 36% of consumers would put this check first. |
| Essential appliance |
Identify which function is missing from your home and check that the corresponding appliance is covered by your local support scheme. |
Without a practical way to keep food fresh, wash clothes or cook, I first want to restore this everyday function; around 29% of consumers would make it their priority. |
| Energy use and durability |
Compare the capacity and energy-label figures of similar appliances. For an eligible new washing machine, also check the durability index described by ADEME. |
When several models already meet my needs, I want to choose based on the resources they use and how durable they are; around 21% of consumers would prioritise this. |
| Additional appliance |
Check which categories are allowed, how much space you have and which features are useful, including noise levels if the appliance will be used near living areas. |
Once the essentials are covered, I may want to make washing up or cleaning floors easier; around 14% of consumers would prioritise this additional appliance. |

Frequently asked questions
Is Caf support for household appliances the same across France?
No. The support schemes offered by Caf de Paris and Caf de Saône-et-Loire are local schemes with different conditions. Check with the organisation responsible for your address which appliances are eligible and what steps you need to take before buying.
Can I buy the appliance before applying for support?
Not under the conditions set out by these two Cafs. Caf de Paris doesn’t reimburse purchases already made and requires a quote before you buy, while Caf de Saône-et-Loire requires prior written approval. Wait for the approval required by the scheme that applies to you.
Does Caf de Saône-et-Loire accept online purchases?
No. Caf de Saône-et-Loire says its household and furniture support scheme doesn’t accept online purchases or purchases from private sellers. This local rule doesn’t determine the conditions set by another Caf.
Can a refurbished or second-hand appliance qualify for local support?
Yes, subject to the conditions of the scheme in question. Caf de Paris refers to refurbished A/A+ products guaranteed by the retailers that sell them. Caf de Saône-et-Loire accepts some second-hand purchases from shops or charities, but not from private sellers or online. Check that the appliance, retailer and quote are approved before buying.
What should I compare on a washing machine or dishwasher energy label?
Compare energy use, capacity and noise levels between appliances of the same type that meet your needs. ADEME says that a 7 kg capacity is usually enough for a washing machine; however, choose a size to suit the amount of laundry in your household and check that the model is listed on the approved quote.
