What should you compare before buying?
In France, ADEME’s benchmarks relate to specific appliances and cooking cycles. They are no substitute for comparing the meals you usually prepare. Start by identifying the tasks you repeat most often, then check the requirements of the appliance you’re considering.
| What matters to you |
What to check |
Who is it most relevant to? |
| Frying or cooking in a saucepan |
Whether your cookware is compatible with induction; the number of cooking zones and the model’s connection rating. |
If I often cook in a pan, I want my saucepans to be suitable and the hob to meet my cooking needs. Around 33% of consumers prioritise hob cooking. |
| Reheating and defrosting |
Usable capacity and dimensions; power input and functions designed for these tasks. |
If I mainly reheat portions or defrost food, I’m looking for an appliance suited to these tasks, without expecting it to replace an oven. Around 27% of consumers prioritise reheating portions. |
| Oven-baked dishes and quantities |
Capacity and cooking modes suited to the dishes you prepare; the dimensions of the housing for a built-in model. |
If I regularly prepare oven-baked dishes or several portions, I want a capacity suited to the batches I plan to cook. Around 20% of consumers prioritise oven cooking. |
| Appliances you already own and available space |
Functions already covered; dimensions, ventilation requirements and connection details given for the model. |
If my appliances are still working, I want to avoid duplication and check that a replacement will fit the available space. Around 20% of consumers prioritise making the most of what they already have and the space available. |
Brands and models to consider
These examples highlight features of specific models. They are not an overall assessment of the brands, nor do they indicate availability on Joybuy.
Bosch
A range of documented models for comparing induction hobs, ceramic hobs and built-in ovens.
- Bosch lists three cooking zones and a connection rating of 4 600 W for the PUJ611BB5E induction hob; the PKE611CA8E ceramic hob has four cooking zones.
- Check the connection and installation requirements for each model. A feature listed for one model does not necessarily apply to other products from the brand.
Samsung
The MS23K3513AK/EF solo microwave is an example of an appliance to distinguish from a convection oven.
- Samsung lists a capacity of 23 L and a power input of 1 150 W in microwave mode for this model.
- Power input alone is not enough to compare the energy used to prepare a meal in a microwave with that used to cook a dish in an oven.
Whirlpool
The WBI4IS8PM1XAF is an example of a built-in oven designed for dishes cooked in the oven.
- Whirlpool lists a capacity of 73 L, an A+ rating, and pyrolytic and hydrolytic cleaning functions for this model.
- These features alone do not show that it will use less electricity per dish than another oven.
Panasonic
The NN-E20JW is an example of a solo microwave suited to portions and uses that fit its dimensions.
- Panasonic lists a capacity of 20 L and external dimensions of 443 × 330 × 258 mm for this model.
- The advertised cooking power of 800 W is not a measure of the electrical power input.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use ADEME’s annual table to work out what each meal costs?
No. ADEME’s benchmarks cover annual energy use and numbers of cycles, not the dish you prepare. To compare two ways of cooking, record the kWh needed for the same dish, taking into account the quantity and cooking method. You can then apply the price per kWh in your tariff to estimate the cost.
What should I check before replacing a hob or built-in oven?
Compare the dimensions of the appliance and its housing, the connection rating, the type of plug and the clearances specified in the manual for your chosen model. Have the electrical installation checked for compatibility rather than assuming the existing supply will be suitable. The legislation cited by Légifrance concerns electrical installations in new residential buildings; its provisions should not be presented as applying in the same way to every existing home.
What should I know about ventilation and maintenance?
Follow the clearances specified in the appliance manual and make sure its vents are not blocked. For kitchen air quality, ADEME says that ventilation can be increased while cooking and steam is being released. Check the manual for your chosen model to find out how to clean it properly.
Is an additional commercial warranty compulsory in France?
No. When an individual buys goods from a professional seller, the statutory guarantee of conformity is compulsory, while a commercial warranty is optional. The Ministry of the Economy distinguishes this statutory guarantee from separately offered paid services. Check the terms of any installation, repair or extended warranty service.
Does an oven’s energy rating also apply to a microwave?
No. Under Delegated Regulation (EU) No 65/2014 on the energy labelling of domestic ovens and range hoods, ovens that offer a microwave heating function are excluded. So don’t compare the rating of a conventional oven with a supposed equivalent rating for a microwave.
