Who are these options for?

Households drying full loads

If you have room for a separate appliance and often want to dry most of a wash in one go, start by considering how much laundry you actually wash. UFC-Que Choisir recommends taking both household size and washing machine capacity into account when choosing a tumble dryer.

People who dry their laundry indoors

If you don’t have a practical outdoor space, where you put your clothes airer matters too. The Q-WASH study published by ADEME describes air-drying laundry as a significant source of moisture in the home. It recommends using a large, well-ventilated room or one with an extractor. A condenser tumble dryer doesn’t need an air vent to the outside, but you should still check the installation requirements.

Households with room for just one appliance

A washer-dryer can save you from having to make room for a separate appliance. However, check both its capacities: Bosch says the WNG24402FR can wash up to 9 kg, but can handle up to 6 kg on a wash-and-dry cycle.

What should you check before choosing?

Heat pump tumble dryer

Worth considering: if you regularly dry full loads in a separate appliance, including where there’s no external air vent.

Bear in mind: check the Eco programme duration if you need to do several loads in a row, as well as the space the appliance needs.

Standard condenser dryer

Worth considering: if you already own one or are looking at a second-hand model, after checking its condition and energy consumption.

For a new purchase: the European Commission says that household tumble dryers placed on the EU market from 1 July 2025 must use heat pump technology.

Washer-dryer

Worth considering: if your home can only accommodate one appliance and the loads you need to dry are within its drying capacity.

Keep in mind: Bosch states that the WNG24402FR can wash a 9 kg load, which exceeds the 6 kg capacity of its wash-and-dry cycle.

PriorityWhat to checkWhat you need
Drying capacity Compare the capacity in kg with the loads you usually wash. For a washer-dryer, check the washing and drying capacities separately. I want to dry a full wash without routinely having to take some of it out.
Space and installation Measure the appliance, the space it will go in and the route to the room. Check the instructions for the exact model for clearance, ventilation and electrical connection requirements. I only have room for one appliance, or access to the room limits the size of the appliance.
Water drainage The European Commission explains that a condenser tumble dryer collects water in a tank or can drain it away. Check the system on the model you’re considering and whether it can take a drain hose. Without an external air vent, I want to know where the water extracted from my laundry will go and whether I’ll need to empty a tank.
Energy use and cycle time Compare the energy label, stated energy consumption and Eco programme duration across similar models. Also check the noise level if the appliance will be near living areas. I dry laundry often, but I also need to know when a load will be ready.
Drying laundry at home If you still use an indoor clothes airer, ADEME recommends a large, well-ventilated room or one with an extractor. You should also follow the tumble dryer’s installation instructions. I regularly dry laundry in a room with limited ventilation.

What pitfalls should you avoid?

  • Choosing a standard condenser dryer when buying new

Simply comparing it with older appliances isn’t enough to guide your purchase. The European Commission says that household tumble dryers placed on the EU market from 1 July 2025 must use heat pump technology.

Check the technology first, then compare the capacity, energy label, Eco programme duration and installation requirements of the models you’re considering.

  • Confusing washing capacity with drying capacity

You may need to split a large wash before drying it in a washer-dryer. For example, Bosch lists a 9 kg washing capacity but a 6 kg capacity for the wash-and-dry cycle on the WNG24402FR.

Check both capacities for the model you choose and plan your loads around its drying capacity.

  • Assuming there’s no preparation needed without an external vent

A condenser tumble dryer doesn’t vent moist air through an external duct, but you still need to check where it can go, the ventilation requirements in its instructions and how it collects water.

Measure the route to the room and the space available, then check the model’s instructions for drainage options and the connections it requires.

If the water collects in a tank without a drainage connection, you’ll need to empty it regularly.

  • Relying on a similar-looking model number

A different suffix can indicate a different variant. Samsung France’s product page for the DV90DB7845GBU3 is for a black model, while a Joybuy page with this reference in its title also describes a white DV90DB7845GW.

Before ordering, check the full model number, colour and specifications of the variant on offer against the manufacturer’s documentation.

A few models from well-known brands

The details below apply to the named models, not to every appliance made by each brand.

Bosch

Bosch offers two different types to consider: the freestanding WTX87M09FF tumble dryer and the WNG24402FR washer-dryer.

  • Bosch says the WTX87M09FF is a 9 kg heat pump tumble dryer measuring 842 × 598 × 613 mm, with a stated noise level of 62 dB(A) and a water drain hose.
  • Bosch lists the WNG24402FR as having a 9 kg washing capacity and a 6 kg capacity for a wash-and-dry cycle, so check how that compares with your usual loads.

Samsung

The DV90DB7845GBU3 is worth considering if you’re looking for a 9 kg heat pump tumble dryer.

  • Samsung France lists an A energy rating and dimensions of 600 × 850 × 600 mm for this model.
  • You’ll still need to compare the Eco programme duration, available space and connections with your requirements; claims about AI Dry+ don’t replace these checks.

Miele

The TCA520WP 8kg Active is an example of an 8 kg heat pump tumble dryer with two water-management options to consider.

  • Miele France lists a condensation water container and an integrated condensation water drain kit for this model.
  • Before planning to connect a drain, check the instructions for how to install the kit in your home.

These three models are freestanding heat pump tumble dryers. To choose between them, start with your laundry loads and check the dimensions, Eco programme duration and water-management options for each model.

White Hotpoint CHD84MWBSEE heat pump tumble dryer

Hotpoint CHD84MWBSEE, 8 kg, class C

This 8 kg heat pump tumble dryer is worth considering if its capacity suits your regular loads. Check its dimensions and Eco programme duration to plan the installation and your laundry routine. If you want to drain water directly, confirm that the model is compatible and that the required hose is included.

Frequently asked questions

Does a heat pump tumble dryer need an external air vent?

No. The European Commission says that a condenser tumble dryer doesn’t need an air vent to the outside; water is collected in a tank or drained away. However, check the model’s instructions for ventilation, clearance and connection requirements.

Can you still buy a standard condenser dryer in France?

The European Commission says that household tumble dryers placed on the EU market from 1 July 2025 must use heat pump technology. This rule for placing products on the market doesn’t mean you can’t use an older appliance you already own. If you’re considering buying second-hand, check the condition and specifications of the appliance in question.

Can a washer-dryer dry the full washing load?

Not necessarily: check the two capacities separately. Bosch lists a washing capacity of up to 9 kg for the WNG24402FR, compared with 6 kg for a wash-and-dry cycle. You’ll need to reduce a larger washing load before drying it or dry it in several batches.

Do you need to stop using an indoor clothes airer altogether?

No. If you continue to air-dry laundry at home, the Q-WASH study published by ADEME recommends using a large, well-ventilated room or one with an extractor, as this activity releases a lot of moisture into the air indoors. This is particularly worth bearing in mind if you regularly dry large loads there.

Do you need to empty the water tank after every drying cycle?

It depends on the appliance and how it’s installed: condensed water can be stored in a tank or drained away through a connection. Bosch says a suitable kit allows compatible models to drain into a sink or trap. Check the instructions and confirm the kit is included before planning this connection.
