Who are these solutions right for?

Tenants who use a clothes airer

If you don’t have a balcony or room for another large appliance, you can keep using a clothes airer if your room is suitable. For air-drying clothes, ADEME recommends a large, well-ventilated room or one with an extractor.

Households doing several loads of laundry a week

If your clothes airer takes up space in your living area for long periods, consider a condenser tumble dryer. Check that you have enough room, and compare capacity, noise, cycle times and how the condensed water is collected or drained.

People living in a home that stays damp

If dampness persists while clothes are drying on an airer, first check the room’s airflow and ventilation. ADEME says you can use a dehumidifier if your home remains too damp.

What should you check before choosing?

Start by working out where the moisture from your laundry will go, then check that the equipment and its requirements suit the room.

PriorityWhat to checkWhat I need
Room humidity If you use a clothes airer, check for good airflow or an extractor. For a condenser tumble dryer, compare the model’s condensation efficiency in EPREL. I dry my clothes indoors and don’t want moisture to build up over time. For air-drying, ADEME recommends a large, well-ventilated room or one with an extractor.
Installation If there’s no outside vent, rule out vented tumble dryers and consider a condenser model, following its installation instructions. Measure the space, including the clearance needed to open the door. My flat has no external air outlet, so I need to be able to install the appliance and easily access its water tank or drain.
Cycles and noise For tumble dryers with similar capacities, compare weighted energy consumption per cycle, noise in dB(A) and the Eco programme duration. The European Commission lists model-by-model data in EPREL. I do several loads a week, so I want to know how long a cycle takes and whether the noise will be suitable for the space I have in mind.
Water management Check the tank capacity, whether continuous drainage is possible and what maintenance the model requires. A dehumidifier also needs to be emptied. I’d prefer an emptying and cleaning routine that fits how often I do laundry.
Clothes airer and spin cycle Choose a spin cycle that’s permitted by the care labels on your clothes. If you’re then air-drying them, make sure the room is well ventilated or has an extractor, in line with ADEME’s recommendations. I want to keep using my clothes airer without assuming that a faster spin cycle or a fan alone will solve the room’s humidity problem.

What should you watch out for?

  • Choosing a vented tumble dryer without an outside outlet

This type of appliance needs to expel moist air outside. According to the European Commission and UFC-Que Choisir, a condenser tumble dryer doesn’t need an external air vent.

Check the technology used by the model you’re considering, then find out how its condensed water will be collected or drained.

  • Relying on a fan to control humidity

Air-drying clothes adds moisture to the room. Moving the air with a fan is no substitute for the ventilation or extraction recommended by ADEME.

Check the existing ventilation. If the room stays damp, consider a condenser tumble dryer or adding a dehumidifier.

  • Comparing tumble dryers by energy rating alone

The energy rating letter alone tells you nothing about cycle duration, noise or condensation efficiency, all of which matter when the appliance is near a living area.

For models with similar capacities, check the current energy label and the European Commission’s EPREL data. Also check the dimensions and maintenance requirements.

  • Choosing a dehumidifier based only on its litres-per-day figure

The stated capacity alone doesn’t tell you how the appliance will perform in your room. Tank size, noise and test conditions also matter.

Check the conditions attached to the stated capacity, the tank size and whether continuous drainage is possible. Don’t treat the appliance as a replacement for ventilation.

Depending on the model and installation, you’ll need to empty the tank or provide a hose and a suitable drain.

A few brands to consider

Bosch

Bosch France’s product details for the WTH85V02FF describe an 8 kg heat pump tumble dryer. It’s worth considering if you have space for this type of appliance.

  • For this model, Bosch lists dimensions of 842 × 598 × 613 mm, noise of 65 dB(A) and a water drain hose.
  • The product details state that the condenser is not self-cleaning. Check the maintenance requirements and space needed before choosing this model.

Miele

The TEA525WP 8kg Active is a Miele heat pump model worth comparing for its water management and maintenance information.

  • For this model, Miele lists an 8 kg capacity, a condensation water tank and an integrated drain hose.
  • The product details explain how to empty the tank and clean the filters, so factor these tasks into your routine.

Rowenta

The DH5260F0 is worth considering if you’re looking at a dehumidifier to use alongside an indoor clothes airer.

  • For this model, Rowenta lists 16 L/day, a 3 L tank or drain hose, and coverage of up to 40 m²/100 m³.
  • These are the figures Rowenta gives for the DH5260F0. Check they’re suitable for your room, and continue to ventilate it.

Drying and dehumidifying options on Joybuy

These models are designed for two different purposes: drying clothes in a heat pump tumble dryer, or managing the room’s humidity while clothes dry on an airer with a dehumidifier. For each one, check the space it needs, how water is managed and which features suit your room.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use a vented tumble dryer without an outside outlet?

No. This type of appliance needs an air duct to expel moist air outside, so it isn’t suitable for an installation without one. According to the European Commission and UFC-Que Choisir, a condenser tumble dryer doesn’t need this duct. However, check where it will fit and how you’ll manage the condensed water.

Which technology should you look for in a new tumble dryer?

Consider heat pump models and compare their features rather than focusing on their energy rating alone. The European Commission says that, since 1 July 2025, only tumble dryers using this technology can be placed on the EU market.

What should you compare when choosing a tumble dryer for a flat?

For appliances with similar capacities, compare weighted energy consumption per cycle, noise in dB(A), the Eco programme duration and condensation efficiency. The European Commission publishes model-by-model details in EPREL. Also check the dimensions and drainage options.

Can a dehumidifier replace ventilation?

No. ADEME recommends checking that air vents and ventilation systems are working properly, and airing out your home. It says you can use a dehumidifier if humidity remains too high. It’s an additional measure, not a solution to poor ventilation.
