How to choose a hardcover notebook without getting it wrong?

A hardcover notebook can accompany you through lectures, meetings, journaling or sketching sessions. But its appearance doesn't tell you everything about how comfortable it is or how long it will last. A pretty cover can hide an awkward binding, paper that's too thin, or a size that doesn't fit well in your bag.

Before you place an order, focus on three criteria: the binding, the paper weight and the size. Here are the points to check, along with a selection of notebooks suited to different uses.

Common pitfalls when buying

1. Confusing a hard cover with overall durability

A cardboard cover protects the pages well when you're on the move, but it doesn't guarantee a long-lasting binding on its own. A stitched, glued or spiral-bound notebook behaves differently when it's opened several times a day or carried in a bag.

Also check the corners, the elastic closure and whether the notebook can lie flat. A 180° flat opening makes writing on both pages much easier, especially during long note-taking sessions.

2. Relying only on the phrase "quality paper"

The paper weight gives you a much more concrete clue. 100 gsm paper generally feels denser and more pleasant than 70 gsm paper, even though the result also depends on the ink and pen you use. With a fountain pen, felt-tip pen or very wet rollerball, check the manufacturer's specifications and, if possible, test a few pages before committing the notebook to an important project.

The shade also affects comfort. 100 gsm ivory paper gives a softer look and less harsh contrast than bright white. Acid-free pages are designed to preserve your notes better over time, without necessarily matching the requirements of professional archiving.

3. Choosing a size that's too big or too small

At 148 × 210 mm, an A5 notebook is a good compromise for lectures, the office and journaling. A pocket notebook slips more easily into a jacket, but leaves less room for writing. At the other extreme, an XXL notebook is better suited to plans, mind maps, drawings and bulky files, at the cost of taking up more space.

Before ordering, measure the space available in your bag and estimate how many pages you'll need each week.

The parameters to check before ordering

Ruling and page organisation

  • Lined notebook: ideal for text, meeting notes, lists and journaling sessions.
  • Grid notebook: practical for tables, diagrams, calculations and plans.
  • Blank page notebook: best for drawing, collage and visual ideas.
  • Perforated page notebook: useful for quickly passing on a note, but the remaining pages are sometimes less well protected.

For everyday use, a notebook also benefits from having a ribbon bookmark, an expandable inner pocket and an elastic closure. These extras aren't just for show: they let you find a page in an instant and stop the notebook from opening in your bag.

Binding and comfort

A spiral-bound notebook opens easily and can be folded back on itself. On the downside, the spiral takes up more space on the side and can get in the way when you're writing near the margin. A stitched or glued binding gives a more classic look, often appreciated for a professional notebook or a gift.

Materials and precautions

The product page should state the type of cover, the number of sheets, the paper weight and any accessories included. Some references mention paper from FSC-certified sources or responsibly managed forests: this is information about the sourcing, not to be confused with a general promise about the product's environmental impact.

Ribbons, elastic bands and small parts are not suitable for children under 3 years old due to choking hazards. Also keep the notebook away from moisture, heat and sharp objects.

Frequently asked questions about hardcover notebooks

Which size should I choose for studying and work?

The A5 size suits most lectures, meetings and to-do lists. It's compact enough to fit in a rucksack or messenger bag. For plans, technical drawings or projects that need several columns, an XXL size gives you a much more comfortable writing surface.

What's the difference between a lined notebook and a grid notebook?

A lined notebook guides your writing and makes it easier to write paragraphs. A grid notebook helps you align tables, graphs, calculations and diagrams. For creative use, a blank page notebook gives you more freedom, but you have to structure the space yourself.

How long can a hardcover notebook last?

Its lifespan depends on how many times it's opened, how it's transported, the humidity and how intensively it's used. A hard cover, suitable binding and an elastic closure can limit external wear. To keep it in good condition, avoid overfilling it, put documents in the pocket provided and store it in a dry place.
