Who is each approach suited to?

Homes with tiled floors and everyday debris

If you want to pick up small bits of waste while mopping, look for a suction test of the exact model before ditching your vacuum. UFC-Que Choisir points out that many floor cleaners are mainly for washing, although Les Numériques found that some specific models did pick up debris.

People who already own a vacuum cleaner

If your current appliance picks up dust and debris, a floor cleaner can complement it by handling regular wet cleaning on compatible flooring. It doesn’t need to do both jobs on its own.

People who want to schedule their cleaning

A robot with a mopping function can handle light cleaning runs on clear hard floors, as long as you have another way to tackle dried-on or stubborn marks. A test published by UFC-Que Choisir in December 2024 recommends checking the results for the specific robot rather than assuming its mopping function will be effective.

What should you compare when choosing?

Start by separating debris collection from mopping, then check your flooring and consider what maintenance you’re prepared to do.

What to considerWhat to checkHow it fits my needs
Picking up debris For a combination appliance, look for a debris pick-up test of the exact model. A cleaner designed mainly for wet washing won’t automatically replace a vacuum; a separate vacuum still does that job. I want to pick up crumbs and dust before or while mopping, without assuming the name ‘wet-and-dry vacuum’ is enough to guarantee it.
Flooring and dirt Check which floor types are approved in the appliance and flooring instructions. Compare tests on everyday and stubborn stains: a mopping function doesn’t promise to remove every mark. My tiled floor needs regular mopping, but I’ll tackle ingrained stains another way. For a wooden floor, I’ll follow its care instructions first.
Scheduled cleaning For a robot, check the model’s mopping and vacuuming results, as well as the areas it can reach. An automated station doesn’t, by itself, prove that the cleaning is effective. I’d rather delegate light cleaning runs and can deal separately with dried-on marks or hard-to-reach areas.
Appliance maintenance See how to empty the tanks and maintain the roller, pads and filters. Check which consumables are compatible: UFC-Que Choisir says these are often brand-specific and need replacing regularly. After each cleaning run, I can set aside time to deal with the dirty water and clean the parts, even if the appliance has a self-cleaning function.
Ease of use and battery life For a cordless model, compare its battery life and charging time with the area you need to clean. If low furniture gets in the way, check the stated height and recline angle. I clean several rooms or under low furniture, so the weight in my hand and interruptions for charging matter to me.

What should you look out for before buying?

  • Assuming ‘wet-and-dry vacuum’ guarantees suction

UFC-Que Choisir finds that many floor cleaners have little or poor suction, although Les Numériques found that some tested models picked up debris well.

Before giving up your vacuum, check a suction test for the exact model and the types of waste you need to pick up.

  • Cleaning a wooden floor without checking compatibility

Wet cleaning isn’t suitable for every type of flooring. UFC-Que Choisir advises against using these appliances on wooden floors, particularly solid wood floors with robot mops.

Check the instructions from both the flooring manufacturer and the appliance manufacturer. If in doubt, stick to the recommended method for your floor.

  • Forgetting about rollers, filters and detergents

According to UFC-Que Choisir, these consumables need replacing regularly and are often brand-specific.

Before buying, check the compatible part numbers and replacement guidance, then find out what you’ll need to do to empty and clean the appliance.

  • Expecting a robot to tackle every dried-on stain

In its test of around 40 robot mops, published in December 2024, UFC-Que Choisir rated the mopping and vacuuming functions of most models assessed as poor. This result doesn’t necessarily apply to every newer model.

Check tests of the robot you’re considering and keep a separate method for occasional or stubborn dirt.

Which brands should you compare?

The results mentioned relate to specific models, not every appliance from a brand. Their inclusion here doesn’t mean they’re available at Joybuy.

Roborock

Worth considering if you’re comparing an appliance that combines mopping and debris pick-up on hard floors.

  • In its test of the F25 ACE, Les Numériques reports very good mopping performance and says it picks up large debris.
  • These findings apply to the F25 ACE. Check the results separately for any other model.

Rowenta

A brand to compare if you’re choosing between a combination appliance and a separate vacuum.

  • Les Numériques says the X-Clean 10 it tested picks up debris and is relatively lightweight.
  • Whether it can replace your vacuum depends on the model you choose and the type of debris in your home.

Dreame

Worth considering if you’re comparing cleaning performance near walls and ease of use.

  • In its test of the H15 Pro Heat, Les Numériques reports good suction along walls and good battery life.
  • The same test describes the appliance as rather heavy, with a squeegee that tends to push large debris forwards.

Kärcher

A brand to consider for wet cleaning hard floors, alongside a vacuum if needed.

  • For the model you’re considering, check which floors it’s approved for, along with its accessories and compatible consumables. Don’t assume its capabilities based on the brand alone.

Tineco

A floor-cleaner brand to compare based on your flooring and the jobs you need it to do.

  • For the model you choose, check its debris pick-up, roller maintenance and required consumables separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can a wet-and-dry vacuum replace my regular vacuum cleaner?

Not automatically. UFC-Que Choisir says many floor cleaners, even those described as ‘wet-and-dry vacuums’, are mainly designed for washing and have little or poor suction. Before replacing your vacuum, look for a test of the exact model that covers the types of waste you need to pick up.

Can I use a wet floor cleaner on a wooden floor?

Don’t assume it’s suitable. UFC-Que Choisir advises against using these appliances on wooden floors. Check the instructions from the flooring manufacturer and for the model you’re considering, particularly if you have laminate, lacquered or oiled flooring.

What maintenance should I expect after mopping?

Plan to empty the dirty water and clean the parts that come into contact with dirt, following the instructions. Depending on the model, these may include the roller or pads, tanks and filters. A self-cleaning function may reduce some of the work, but you’ll still need to check the tanks and wear parts.

Can I pour any detergent into the tank?

No. Only use a product approved in the appliance instructions. UFC-Que Choisir warns against unsuitable detergents, particularly those that foam, leave marks or have a pH that isn’t compatible with the components.
