Which routine is right for you?

Your flooring and the dirt you need to remove matter more than the appliance’s name.

Homes with tiles or compatible resilient flooring

If your flooring care instructions allow this type of wet cleaning, a floor cleaner can be used regularly to tackle dust and light marks. You’ll also need to empty the tanks and clean the rollers or pads and filters after use.

Homes with parquet or laminate flooring

Check the flooring care instructions first. UFC-Que Choisir advises against using a floor cleaner on wooden parquet. For its own laminate flooring, Quick-Step recommends regular vacuuming and cleaning with a slightly damp mop. Quick-Step’s instructions don’t apply to every type of laminate.

Shoppers who pay attention to parts and consumables

Check which rollers, filters and cleaning products are compatible with the model you’re considering, then check their availability and how long spare parts are expected to be available. UFC-Que Choisir says consumables are generally brand-specific, so maintenance should be part of your choice of appliance.

What should you check before choosing?

First, choose a method that’s approved for your flooring. Then consider the types of dirt you usually deal with and how much time you want to spend on maintenance.

Roller or pad floor cleaner

Consider this: if you want to clean a compatible hard floor regularly with a wet-cleaning appliance.

The trade-off: you’ll need to clean the appliance after use. And, according to UFC-Que Choisir, don’t assume it will replace your vacuum for dry debris.

Vacuum and mop

Stick with this if: you want to pick up dry debris separately and control how much moisture you use, depending on your flooring.

The trade-off: vacuuming and mopping remain two separate steps.

Steam cleaner

Consider this: only if the flooring manufacturer explicitly allows steam on the surface in question.

Bear in mind: UFC-Que Choisir says steam cleaners don’t work well on every surface.

Priority What to check What I need
Flooring Identify the material and finish, then check the care instructions to see whether wet cleaning, a powered appliance or steam is allowed. For its laminate flooring, Quick-Step recommends cleaning with a slightly damp mop. I want to care for my floor using methods approved by its manufacturer, especially if it’s wood or laminate.
What needs cleaning Distinguish between light marks, dry debris and stubborn stains. In its March 2026 test, UFC-Que Choisir found that the floor cleaners assessed were mainly effective on hard floors, performed poorly at picking up dry dirt and couldn’t remove stubborn stains. If crumbs and dry dust are a regular problem, I need to be able to pick them up before mopping, rather than rely on wet cleaning alone.
Appliance maintenance Check how to empty the tanks, clean the rollers or pads and maintain the filters. Find out what you’ll still need to do, even if the appliance has a self-cleaning function. I’m looking for a routine I can keep up with, including cleaning the appliance—not just a quick pass over the floor.
Consumables and spare parts Check which rollers, filters and detergents are compatible, and whether they and the parts intended for the exact model are available. UFC-Que Choisir says consumables are generally brand-specific. Before choosing an appliance, I want to know how to replace its maintenance parts and keep it working.

Which buying pitfalls should you avoid?

  • Assuming a “vacuum mop” can replace your vacuum

According to UFC-Que Choisir, the floor cleaners assessed mainly pick up water or use rollers, and are limited when it comes to dry debris. If you regularly need to clean up crumbs or dry dust, you may still need a separate vacuum.

Make a note of the types of dirt you usually deal with, then look for test results that specifically cover how well the model you’re considering picks up dry debris.

  • Relying on the “hard floors” label alone

The amount of water and heat that can be used varies according to the material and its finish. UFC-Que Choisir advises against using floor cleaners on wooden parquet, while Quick-Step’s care instructions for its laminate flooring recommend slightly damp mopping.

Identify your flooring and follow its care instructions before choosing a wet or steam cleaner. Don’t assume that a product described as suitable for a category of flooring is approved for your specific floor.

  • Forgetting about consumables

Rollers, filters and detergents need replacing and are generally brand-specific, according to UFC-Que Choisir.

Before ordering, check which parts are compatible with the exact model, whether they’re available and what the detergent instructions say.

  • Only considering the time spent cleaning the floor

The tanks, rollers or pads and filters also need attention after cleaning. This can add up when you’re using the appliance regularly.

Compare all the steps—preparation, cleaning, emptying and appliance maintenance—with what’s involved in using your vacuum and mop.

Make sure you have somewhere to leave washed parts to dry, in line with the appliance instructions.

Which brands should you compare?

These brands offer useful points of comparison when looking at floor cleaners. The features and limitations mentioned apply to the models or ranges specified, not necessarily every appliance made by each brand.

Kärcher

FC floor cleaners are among the products mentioned in French guides and tests by UFC-Que Choisir.

  • A range worth looking at if you’re after a roller cleaner for a compatible hard floor.
  • Check the cleaning and collection results for the specific model. UFC-Que Choisir’s observations about the category don’t show that a floor cleaner can replace a vacuum.

Tineco

The range includes floor cleaners, some of which combine wet cleaning with steam.

  • Tineco lists two tanks, a roller, a filter and a self-cleaning system for the FLOOR ONE S7 Stretch Steam. Compare these features with the maintenance you’ll need to carry out.
  • The features listed for this model don’t prove how well it cleans. If you’re considering steam, also check that your flooring manufacturer allows it.

Dreame

Dreame offers a range of cordless vacuum mops for hard floors.

  • The brand describes appliances that combine vacuuming and mopping. Consider them in light of the types of dirt you need to remove.
  • This overview of the range doesn’t prove that every model picks up dry debris. UFC-Que Choisir warns against making that assumption based on the term “vacuum mop”.

Rowenta

The X-Clean 7 GZ5736E0 is among the models mentioned in a French UFC-Que Choisir publication.

  • UFC-Que Choisir says the X-Clean 7 GZ5736E0 it tested doesn’t need detergent. This is worth checking if you want to keep the number of products you need to buy to a minimum.
  • Don’t assume this applies to other X-Clean models: accessories and instructions vary by model.

Bissell

Bissell is mentioned in UFC-Que Choisir’s French guide to floor cleaners, including archived CrossWave models.

  • The brand’s wet-cleaning appliances are worth comparing if you’re focusing on the tanks and maintenance needed after use.
  • Check which rollers and detergents are compatible with the specific model. Models archived by UFC-Que Choisir don’t indicate current availability.

Frequently asked questions

Can a floor cleaner replace a vacuum and mop?

Not always. UFC-Que Choisir says the floor cleaners it assessed mainly clean hard surfaces and are poor at picking up dust and dry debris. Keep a vacuum in your routine if you regularly need to pick up this kind of dirt before wet cleaning.

Can you use a floor cleaner on parquet or laminate flooring?

Check the flooring care instructions first. UFC-Que Choisir advises against using a floor cleaner on wooden parquet. For its own laminate flooring, Quick-Step recommends regular vacuuming and a slightly damp mop. This doesn’t mean a floor cleaner is suitable for every type of laminate.

Is steam suitable for all hard floors?

No. The term “hard floor” doesn’t mean steam is safe to use. Check that your flooring manufacturer explicitly allows it and follow the appliance instructions. UFC-Que Choisir also points out that steam cleaners don’t work well on every surface.

What should you maintain after using a roller floor cleaner?

Follow the model’s instructions to empty the tanks and clean the roller or pads and filters. A self-cleaning function may take care of some of this, but check what you’ll still need to empty, rinse and leave to dry.

Can you use any detergent in a floor cleaner?

No. Don’t use a different product from the one recommended without checking the appliance manufacturer’s instructions. UFC-Que Choisir advises taking account of foam, residue and whether the product is compatible with the appliance’s components. Also check that the approved product is suitable for your flooring.
