Which option suits your needs?

Households that freshen up hard floors regularly

On tiles or lino, a damp clean may be enough for light dirt. UFC-Que Choisir describes hard-floor cleaners as a supplementary option for this purpose; you’ll also need to maintain the appliance after use.

Households dealing with both dry and wet mess

In a kitchen or living room, a wet-and-dry vacuum can combine both tasks. However, check its vacuuming and washing performance separately, along with how easy its tanks are to handle. Having both functions doesn’t guarantee good results from either.

People who prefer to schedule their cleaning

A robot mop may suit you if you want to cut down on regular manual cleaning. However, in its review of robot vacuum-mops published in December 2024, UFC-Que Choisir found that the mopping and vacuuming functions of most models tested were poor. Tough stains therefore remain a separate challenge.

What should you check?

First, decide whether you need occasional damp cleaning, dry vacuuming or scheduled cleaning. Then check what each option requires on your floors and after every use.

Cordless hard-floor cleaner

Choose this if: you want to freshen up a compatible hard floor regularly, guiding the appliance over light marks as you go.

Limitation: the hard-floor cleaners reviewed by UFC-Que Choisir don’t replace a vacuum cleaner for dry debris or targeted cleaning of stubborn stains.

Wet-and-dry vacuum

Choose this if: you want to tackle both wet and dry mess with one appliance, particularly in rooms where spills are common.

Limitation: check the model’s vacuuming and washing results separately, then consider how long it takes to clean its tanks and roller.

Vacuum cleaner and mop

Choose this if: removing dry dust and debris is your priority, or if you want to tackle heavily soiled areas yourself.

Drawback: you’ll need to vacuum first and mop afterwards, rather than doing both in one pass.

Robot mop

Choose this if: scheduling light cleaning matters more to you than dealing with a specific mark straight away.

Limitation: tests of robot mops published by UFC-Que Choisir in December 2024 show that a docking station and mopping function don’t guarantee a satisfactory clean.

CriteriaWhat to checkMy needs
Type of dirt Compare results for light marks and dried-on stains when the test method specifies the surface and type of dirt. If you want to replace dry vacuuming, check how well it picks up dust and debris too. I mainly want to freshen up the floor after everyday little mishaps; if crumbs build up or stains dry, I’ll need a solution for those jobs too.
Flooring Check the model’s manual and your flooring manufacturer’s care instructions. UFC-Que Choisir describes these appliances as being intended mainly for hard floors and advises against using a hard-floor cleaner on wooden parquet. My rooms don’t all have the same flooring, so I need to know where damp cleaning is permitted before choosing an appliance.
Maintenance Check which tanks need emptying, which rollers or pads need washing and which filters need checking. If an automatic cycle is advertised, find out what you’ll still need to do on the model you’re considering. To make frequent cleaning practical, I’m happy to look after the appliance after every use.
Consumables Check which rollers, filters and detergents are compatible with the model, how often they should be replaced and whether they’re available. UFC-Que Choisir points out that these consumables are often brand-specific. I want to keep using the appliance without finding out too late that the parts I need are hard to get hold of.
Ease of use For a cordless appliance, compare the stated battery life with the mode you’ll use and the area you need to clean. Check how easy it is to manoeuvre with full tanks and whether it will fit under your furniture. If I often take the appliance round several rooms, ease of handling and recharging matter just as much as its features.
Automation For a robot, check how easily it can move around your home, how much space the docking station needs and what you’ll still need to do with the water, pads or rollers and filters. I’d rather schedule regular cleaning than expect a robot to deal with a stubborn stain on its own.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing a hard-floor cleaner with a vacuum cleaner

According to UFC-Que Choisir, the hard-floor cleaners it reviews are mainly for washing hard floors and don’t pick up dry dust and debris like a conventional vacuum cleaner.

If crumbs, hair or dust are your main concern, keep a vacuum cleaner or check the vacuuming results for a specific wet-and-dry model.

  • Expecting it to remove every stain

UFC-Que Choisir’s hard-floor cleaner tests report limited effectiveness on stubborn stains. A quick damp clean and removing a dried-on mark are two different jobs.

Compare tests for the types of stains you’re likely to encounter, and keep a cleaning method that’s suitable for your flooring to deal with dried-on marks.

  • Forgetting about consumables

UFC-Que Choisir reminds shoppers that rollers, filters and detergents need replacing and are often specific to each brand.

Before choosing a model, check which parts are compatible, whether they’re available and how often they should be replaced.

  • Choosing a robot to deal with tough stains

In its review published in December 2024, UFC-Que Choisir found that most robot mops tested did a poor job of washing floors. A docking station automates some tasks, but doesn’t necessarily remove stains.

Choose this option for scheduled cleaning if it suits your home, but be ready to tackle tough dirt yourself.

A docking station takes up permanent space, and you’ll still need to look after its tanks and accessories, depending on the model.

Brands to know

Bosch

Bosch offers OneFlow wet-and-dry vacuums for hard floors, with maintenance features that vary by model.

  • Bosch lists self-cleaning at 70 °C, hot-air drying up to 75 °C and an anti-tangle comb among the features of the BHF41WM.
  • These BHF41WM features don’t apply to the whole range: check the model number, its manual and compatible consumables.

Tineco

Tineco offers cordless wet-and-dry vacuums for hard floors; battery life and roller maintenance are worth comparing across models.

  • For the FLOOR ONE S7 Stretch Turbo, Tineco lists up to 65 minutes of battery life, a 1 L clean water tank, a 0.72 L dirty water tank and a FlashDry cycle.
  • These are specifications for this model; they don’t indicate how well it tackles stains or mean you can skip manual maintenance.

Dreame

Dreame’s cordless wet-and-dry vacuum range is designed for hard floors, with features that vary between models.

  • Dreame’s range includes appliances designed to tackle both wet and dry dirt, as well as features such as edge cleaning and self-cleaning.
  • Check the features and consumables for the model you’re considering; UFC-Que Choisir notes that replacement accessories can affect how practical a hard-floor cleaner is to use.

Roborock

Roborock offers robot vacuum-mops with docking stations for households that prefer scheduled cleaning.

  • Roborock says the QV 35A’s docking station washes and dries the mop pads, empties the dust and refills the water tank.
  • These QV 35A features don’t demonstrate how well it washes floors: robot mop tests published by UFC-Que Choisir in December 2024 found that results in this category were often disappointing.

Frequently asked questions

Can a hard-floor cleaner replace a vacuum cleaner?

Not for general vacuuming of dry dust and debris. UFC-Que Choisir describes the hard-floor cleaners it reviews as appliances designed mainly for damp cleaning hard floors. Keep a vacuum cleaner if dry cleaning is one of your regular needs.

Can it remove stubborn stains?

Don’t make this your main reason for buying one: hard-floor cleaner tests published by UFC-Que Choisir in March 2026 found limited effectiveness on stubborn stains. For dried-on marks, use a cleaning method that’s suitable for your flooring.

Which floors can you use a hard-floor cleaner on?

UFC-Que Choisir describes these appliances as being intended mainly for hard floors, including tiles and lino; its guide advises against using a hard-floor cleaner on wooden parquet. Check both the appliance manual and the care instructions for your flooring.

Does the appliance need maintaining after every use?

Yes. Follow the model’s manual to empty the tanks and check the rollers or pads and filters. A self-cleaning or drying cycle, if available, may take care of some steps, but won’t remove the need for all checks.

Can you pour any detergent into the tank?

No, not without checking that it’s compatible. UFC-Que Choisir highlights the foam and marks that an unsuitable product can leave; follow the appliance manufacturer’s instructions and your flooring care guidance.
