Who are these formats for?

Hosts cooking for a group

For tzatziki, a cold sauce or a dessert to assemble, a 1 kg tub of plain yoghurt lets you take out what you need without opening several individual pots. Carrefour, Auchan and Delta all offer products in this format.

Hosts who want to serve individual portions

If each guest should be able to take a pot, compare the weight per pot with the total weight of the multipack. E.Leclerc’s Delisse listings and Carrefour’s Danone listings include multipacks of individual pots.

Shoppers who pay close attention to ingredients

If fat, protein or ingredients influence your choice, read the information for the specific product. Auchan’s Delta listings include a plain yoghurt with 10% fat and another with 0% fat.

What should you look for?

First decide whether you’ll use the yoghurt to make a dish for everyone to share or serve it in individual portions. Then compare the ingredients and plan how you’ll store this chilled product before and after New Year’s Eve.

What to consider What to check Who is it for?
Amount for recipes Net weight of the tub and how much your recipes need; also check how long it keeps once opened. If I’m making several sauces or a dessert to share, I’d rather take the yoghurt from one tub. Around 31% of consumers prioritise having enough for cooking.
Serving individual portions Number of pots, weight per pot and total weight of the multipack. When guests are helping themselves, I don’t want to portion out dessert during the evening. Around 25% of consumers prioritise individual portions.
Ingredients and recipe Ingredients and nutritional information per 100 g, particularly fat, sugars and protein. If the recipe matters more to me than the format, I compare the labels on the specific products. Around 25% of consumers prioritise the ingredients.
Storage and leftovers Use-by date, recommended temperature and instructions for after opening. If I’m buying in advance, I want to know how to store the yoghurt and what to do with any leftovers after the meal. Around 19% of consumers put this first.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming all Greek yoghurts have the same ingredients

The name alone doesn’t tell you how much fat or protein a yoghurt contains. Auchan’s listings for Delta products with 10% and 0% fat illustrate how products can differ.

Compare the nutritional information per 100 g and the ingredients list for each product. The DGCCRF says that presenting information per 100 g makes it easier to compare pre-packed foods.

  • Choosing a large tub without planning for leftovers

Instructions for after opening vary: Auchan’s listings for Auchan and Lynos tubs say they should be consumed within 4 and 3 days respectively.

Before buying, check the use-by date and the instructions for after opening on the tub you’ve chosen. If you don’t plan to use any opened yoghurt again, consider individual portions.

An opened tub that can’t be finished within the stated time may go to waste.

  • Leaving the yoghurt on the table all evening

Keeping it chilled matters during serving, too. Anses recommends limiting the time that perishable foods spend at room temperature and returning them to the fridge after use.

Serve small amounts and keep the rest chilled; when shopping, pick up refrigerated products towards the end of your trip.

  • Comparing multipacks by pot count alone

Eight 150 g pots and eight 125 g pots don’t provide the same total amount. Danone and Delisse formats listed by Carrefour and E.Leclerc respectively show why the number of portions isn’t enough to go on.

Check both the weight of each pot and the total net weight, then compare them with the number of guests and how you plan to serve the yoghurt.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 1 kg tub always the better choice for New Year’s Eve?

No. A 1 kg tub is best if you’ll be taking yoghurt for several recipes or a dessert to share. For serving individual portions, multipacks listed by Carrefour for Danone and by E.Leclerc for Delisse offer another option. Compare their total weight and instructions for after opening.

How do you compare two formats of Greek yoghurt?

Compare the total net weight, then check the nutritional information on the same per-100 g basis. The DGCCRF says this makes it easier to compare energy, fat, sugars, protein and salt. Check the ingredients for each product, too.

Can you make a Greek yoghurt dip the day before?

Yes, as long as the ingredients and the dip can be kept chilled until serving. Follow the instructions on each product and limit the time it spends at room temperature. Anses recommends returning perishable foods to the fridge promptly after use.

How can you check for allergens before serving the yoghurt?

Read the ingredients list on the specific product, then check the list for any other ingredients you’re adding to the recipe. The DGCCRF says allergens in pre-packed foods must be highlighted on the label. Carrefour’s listings for Carrefour Extra and Danone products, for example, mention milk.

Is the use-by date enough once the yoghurt has been opened?

No. Also follow the time limit after opening shown on the tub and keep the product at the recommended temperature. Auchan’s listings say its 1 kg tub of plain Greek yoghurt should be consumed within 4 days of opening, and the 1 kg Lynos tub within 3 days. Follow the instructions for the product you buy.
