Who are these formats for?

Households sharing a homemade lunch

A large pot can serve several people or be used in cooking, provided it is finished within the stated time after opening. Carrefour and Auchan each offer a 1 kg pot of plain yoghurt.

People who prefer individual portions

If you’re preparing individual lunches, multipacks of small pots mean you won’t have to open a shared container for every serving. E.Leclerc, for example, stocks Delisse multipacks of 4 × 150 g and 8 × 125 g.

Shoppers who pay close attention to ingredients

If protein and fat matter more to you than the ‘Greek yoghurt’ category, Yoplait Plain Skyr is another option to consider. However, it is not Greek yoghurt, and you shouldn’t assume it will work in the same way in recipes.

What should you compare?

First decide whether your household will use one shared pot or individual portions. Then compare the product descriptions and nutritional information for options that suit your routine.

Criteria What to check Who it suits
Ingredients Compare the product description, protein, sugars and fat per 100 g. I want to choose based on the ingredients, without assuming that a creamy texture means a high protein content; around 42% of shoppers make this their top priority.
Family-sized pot and storage Check the total weight, storage temperature and the time limit after opening shown on the packaging. If several people are serving themselves from the same pot, I want to be able to finish it within the recommended time. A format that can be eaten without leftovers would be the priority for around 33% of shoppers.
Individual portions Check the number of pots, their weight and whether they are plain, sweetened or flavoured. When lunches are prepared separately, I prefer to divide up individual pots rather than open a large container; around 25% of shoppers therefore favour individual portions.

Things to watch out for

  • Assuming Greek yoghurt, Greek-style yoghurt and skyr are the same

These descriptions do not necessarily refer to the same recipe. The protein and fat content shown differs between the Carrefour Extra, Auchan and Yoplait products mentioned here.

Check the product description, ingredients and nutritional information per 100 g before choosing a format.

  • Opening a 1 kg pot without planning how you’ll use it

Auchan’s 1 kg Greek yoghurt product page says to consume it within 4 days of opening. A large format is only practical if that quantity suits your household’s routine.

Check the time limit for the product you choose, and consider individual portions if you might leave an opened pot unfinished.

A pot that isn’t finished in time can lead to food waste.

  • Overlooking how to store a chilled product

Nutritional information is no substitute for storage instructions. The DGCCRF reminds consumers that the use-by date, where shown on a food product, must be respected. Once opened, you should also follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Keep the product at the temperature stated on the packaging and maintain the cold chain during transport.

Brands to consider for these formats

Danone

Carrefour stocks Danone plain Greek-style yoghurt in a pack of 4 × 110 g.

  • The pots provide individual portions.
  • The pack contains 440 g in total, so it is not a like-for-like replacement for a 1 kg family-sized pot.

Yoplait

Yoplait Plain Skyr is available in multipacks of 450 g and 850 g, among other options. It is an alternative to Greek yoghurt, not another name for the same product.

  • Yoplait states that its Plain Skyr contains 9,3 g of protein and less than 0,5 g of fat per 100 g.
  • Check that its texture and intended use suit the recipes you have planned.

Carrefour

Carrefour Extra offers plain Greek-style yoghurt in a 1 kg pot.

  • The shared container makes it easy to serve several portions or use some of the yoghurt in cooking.
  • Carrefour’s product page states that it contains 8,6 g of fat per 100 g; the recipe includes milk, cream and milk proteins.

E.Leclerc

E.Leclerc stocks Delisse plain Greek-style yoghurt in multipacks of 4 × 150 g and 8 × 125 g, as well as a 1 kg pot of plain Greek yoghurt.

  • These formats let you choose between individual portions and a shared pot.
  • Check the description of each product: ‘Greek-style yoghurt’ and ‘Greek yoghurt’ are not the same thing.

Auchan

Auchan offers plain Greek yoghurt in a 1 kg pot.

  • Its product page states that it contains 7 g of protein and 10 g of fat per 100 g.
  • Auchan recommends storing it between +2 and +6 °C and consuming it within 4 days of opening.

Lidl

Lidl lists Eridanous Greek-style yoghurt in a multipack, intended for use in savoury and sweet dishes.

  • The product could work served plain or used in a recipe.
  • To compare it with other formats, check the weight and nutritional information on the packaging.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 1 kg pot suitable for every family lunch?

No. It’s best suited to households that can finish the pot within the stated time after opening. If you eat at different times, compare it with multipacks of plain individual portions.

How long can you keep a large pot once it’s open?

Follow the time limit stated for the product in question. Auchan says to consume its 1 kg Greek yoghurt within 4 days of opening. You should also follow the storage temperature shown on the packaging.

Is skyr a type of Greek yoghurt?

No. Skyr and Greek yoghurt are distinct categories. Yoplait states that its Plain Skyr contains 9,3 g of protein and less than 0,5 g of fat per 100 g. Compare the labels and the consistency you’re looking for rather than treating them as interchangeable.

What does the use-by date on yoghurt mean?

The use-by date, shown as ‘use by’, must be respected on products that carry one, as the DGCCRF reminds consumers. Once the pot is open, also follow the time limit and storage conditions specified by the manufacturer.
