Which format is right for you?

If you’re baking in larger batches

If your cake or several recipes need a measured amount of yoghurt, a 1 kg tub of plain yoghurt lets you weigh out what you need without opening several individual pots. Carrefour and Auchan both offer a product in this size.

If you want to keep some portions sealed

A pack of eight or 12 × 125 g pots lets you set some yoghurt aside for baking and use the rest for other things. Just make sure you work out the quantity in grams required by the recipe, rather than counting pots alone.

If you pay close attention to ingredients

If you’re swapping the yoghurt specified in a recipe, compare the ingredients and nutritional information per 100 g. Two formats from the same brand can have different ingredients, as with the Carrefour Extra 1 kg tub and 12 × 125 g multipack.

What should you check?

First, choose a plain yoghurt that suits your recipe, then pick a pack size that lets you use any leftovers. A 1 kg tub makes it easy to weigh out what you need, while a multipack means any unopened pots can stay sealed.

What to consider What to check Who is it for?
Recipe ingredients Whether it’s plain, the ingredients and sugars per 100 g. I want to choose a yoghurt that won’t add an unexpected flavour or ingredients to my cake. Around 36% of consumers prioritise having control over their recipe.
Quantity and leftovers The total net weight and the quantity required by the recipe: a 1 kg tub or a multipack of 125 g pots. If I’m baking several batches, I want enough yoghurt without opening individual pots unnecessarily or leaving a large tub partly used. Finding a suitable pack size comes first for around 29% of consumers.
Type of yoghurt The ingredients and fat content per 100 g of the specific product. My recipe calls for a particular type of yoghurt, and I don’t want to assume that ‘Greek’ and ‘Greek-style’ products have the same ingredients. For around 21% of consumers, this is the main consideration.
Allergens and storage Whether it contains milk, the use-by date and storage instructions after opening. I’m making a cake for a household where the presence of milk needs to be checked, or I need to use the rest of a large tub quickly. Around 14% of consumers put these checks first.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Swapping plain yoghurt for a fruit-flavoured or sweetened version without checking the recipe

A flavoured version may contain ingredients and sugars that aren’t called for in the recipe.

If the recipe asks for plain yoghurt, check the product description, ingredients list and sugars per 100 g before choosing something else.

  • Assuming ‘Greek’ and ‘Greek-style’ products have identical ingredients

The product information available shows that they can differ, even between pack sizes from the same brand. Carrefour lists 8.6 g of fat per 100 g for its 1 kg Extra tub, compared with 10 g for its 12 × 125 g multipack.

Compare the nutritional values per 100 g and the ingredients for the pack you’re buying. A difference on the label alone won’t tell you exactly how the cake will turn out.

  • Buying a 1 kg tub without planning how to use the leftovers

Being able to weigh out what you need is less useful if you can’t finish the remaining yoghurt within the recommended time after opening.

Plan how you’ll use the rest before buying, and follow the instructions on the packaging. Anses recommends returning perishable foods to the fridge promptly after use. Auchan’s product information for its 1 kg Greek yoghurt says to consume it within four days of opening.

Brands to consider when comparing formats

Carrefour Extra

Carrefour offers plain Greek-style yoghurt in a 1 kg tub and a 12 × 125 g multipack: two ways to buy a family-sized quantity.

  • The 1 kg tub lets you weigh out the amount your cake needs.
  • The two formats have different fat contents: 8.6 g per 100 g in the 1 kg tub, compared with 10 g per 100 g in the multipack.

Auchan

Auchan offers plain Greek-style yoghurt in an 8 × 125 g multipack and plain Greek yoghurt in a 1 kg tub.

  • Choosing between individual portions and a large tub lets you match the pack size to the quantity your recipe needs.
  • The product information for the 1 kg tub says to consume it within four days of opening. Bear this in mind if your recipe only uses part of the tub.

Delisse / Marque Repère E.Leclerc

The range featured by E.Leclerc includes plain Greek-style yoghurt in individual portions and a 1 kg tub of Delisse plain Greek yoghurt.

  • The product information for the 1 kg Delisse tub lists pasteurised skimmed milk, pasteurised cream and lactic cultures, as well as 10 g of fat per 100 g.
  • Check the exact product and pack size when choosing: the different formats in the range aren’t interchangeable in a recipe that measures ingredients in grams.

Danone

The Danone plain Greek-style yoghurt featured by Carrefour comes in four 110 g pots, giving you 440 g in total.

  • This pack size could work well if your recipe needs around the same amount.
  • If your recipe needs more yoghurt, check how many packs you’ll need. The product information lists 7 g of fat per 100 g for this product.

Eridanous / Lidl

Lidl offers Eridanous Greek-style yoghurt in a multipack for sweet or savoury recipes.

  • A multipack could be a good option if you plan to use the remaining portions separately.
  • Before using it in a cake, check the total weight, ingredients and nutritional information on the packaging for the product on offer.

Frequently asked questions

For a cake, should you choose ‘Greek’ or ‘Greek-style’ yoghurt?

Choose based on the recipe and the product label, not just the name. The Carrefour Extra and Auchan product information shows different fat contents for their 1 kg tubs. Before substituting another yoghurt, also compare the ingredients and sugars per 100 g.

How long can you keep a 1 kg tub after opening?

Keep the tub in the fridge and follow the storage instructions after opening, without going past the use-by date. Anses recommends promptly returning perishable foods to the fridge and consuming them within three days of opening. The product information for Auchan’s 1 kg Greek yoghurt gives four days for this product. If the guidance differs, follow the shorter timeframe.

What should you check on the packaging before using yoghurt in a recipe?

First, check the product description, ingredients, net weight, allergens and nutritional information per 100 g. For pre-packed food in France, the Directorate-General for Competition Policy, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) specifically reminds shoppers that allergenic ingredients must be highlighted on the label.

Are these products suitable for someone with a milk allergy?

No. The Carrefour Extra, Auchan and Delisse products mentioned here contain milk or cream. Always check the allergens on the packaging of the product you actually buy, even if you switch brand or pack size.
