Who are individual pots suitable for?

Families sharing out portions

One pot per person means there’s no need to measure out or decant yoghurt at breakfast time. Carrefour, E.Leclerc and Auchan all offer multipacks of 4 × 150 g, among other options. Other packs contain eight pots or have a different weight per pot. So it’s worth checking the number of portions and the total quantity separately.

People preparing chilled lunch boxes

An individual pot can be taken with you without having to portion yoghurt out of a larger container, as long as it’s kept chilled. Anses stresses the importance of maintaining the cold chain and following the use-by date where one appears on the product.

What should you look for before choosing?

First decide whether you want plain yoghurt or an already-flavoured recipe. Then compare the number of pots and their weight based on the breakfasts you’re planning.

What to consider What to check Who is it for?
Individual portions Count how many pots you need for the people you’re serving or for lunch boxes, and check the weight of each pot. If several people are having breakfast together, I want to be able to give each person a pot without decanting it. Around 36% of consumers would put having separate portions at the top of their list.
Ingredients and sugars Read the ingredients and allergen information for the exact product, and compare the nutritional values per 100 g. When I’m choosing between plain and flavoured, I want to know the ingredients and sugar content first. This would be a priority for around 29% of consumers.
Total quantity Multiply the number of pots by their weight: 8 × 125 g and 8 × 150 g don’t give you the same quantity. For several breakfasts, I mainly need a pack with enough yoghurt, even if the number of pots is already right for me. Around 21% of consumers would prioritise the total quantity.
Ready-to-serve recipe Check the flavour, ingredients and pot size if you’d prefer a recipe that’s already prepared. If I’m not planning to add a topping, I’d rather choose a recipe with a flavour I like. This would be the main deciding factor for around 14% of consumers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a flavoured recipe is the same as plain yoghurt

Ingredient lists published by Auchan and E.Leclerc for some vanilla or honey recipes include added sugar. Ingredients vary depending on the product you choose.

If you want to add your own topping, check that the pack is labelled “plain”. Otherwise, read the ingredients and nutritional values for the ready-to-serve recipe.

  • Choosing a large tub for individual lunch boxes

A 1 kg tub can be served at the table, but it won’t give you sealed individual pots to divide between several lunch boxes.

If you need portions to take with you, compare multipacks of individual pots and make sure you can keep them chilled during transport.

  • Overlooking the date and chilled storage instructions

For products with a use-by date, Anses advises that they must not be eaten after that date. It also highlights the importance of maintaining the cold chain.

Check the date and storage instructions on the packaging, then use a suitable insulated bag or container if you’re taking a pot with you.

  • The two pack sizes let you choose how many pots you want.

Frequently asked questions

How do you compare packs with different numbers of pots?

Compare the number of pots, the weight of each one and the total quantity in the pack. Carrefour and E.Leclerc offer sizes including 4 × 150 g, 4 × 110 g and 8 × 125 g, so eight pots don’t necessarily mean eight portions of the same size.

Is flavoured yoghurt the same as plain Greek-style yoghurt?

No, you need to compare the products themselves. Ingredient lists published by Auchan and E.Leclerc for some flavoured recipes include added sugar. Check their nutritional values too if this matters to you.

Can you take a yoghurt pot in a lunch box?

Yes, as long as you can follow the storage instructions on the packaging while it’s being transported. Anses recommends maintaining the cold chain and not eating a product after its use-by date, where one applies.

What should you check on the label of prepacked yoghurt?

For prepacked yoghurt sold in France, check the product name, ingredients, net quantity, date and nutritional information. The DGCCRF lists these among the details to look for on a label. Nutritional values per 100 g make it easier to compare pots of different sizes.
