Which format suits you?

Busy households looking for a ready-to-go portion

If everyone grabs breakfast before heading out, individual pots save you having to portion out the yoghurt in the morning. Do check the weight of each pot, though: Carrefour lists Danone in 4 × 110 g pots, Auchan lists its plain variety in 4 × 125 g pots, and E.Leclerc lists Délisse in 4 × 150 g pots.

Households who enjoy yoghurt regularly and prefer to portion it themselves

A tub you can serve by the spoonful may be a good fit if the quantity suits your household’s habits. Carrefour lists a 750 g carton of Yoplait Greek-style stirred yoghurt. Before choosing this format, check that it’s available and read the storage instructions for after opening.

Shoppers who pay close attention to ingredients

When choosing between plain and flavoured yoghurt, check the ingredients list, allergens and nutritional information for the specific product. You can’t assume that a vanilla variety has the same ingredients as a plain one, even when they’re sold by the same retailer.

What should you look for before choosing?

First decide whether you want individual portions or a pack to share. Then compare the net weight and ingredients of products that suit the way you’ll use them.

What to consider What to check Who it suits
Ready-to-serve portions Check the weight of each pot and the total pack weight. The four-packs listed by Carrefour, Auchan and E.Leclerc contain 110 g, 125 g or 150 g per pot, depending on the product. When several people grab breakfast before heading out, I want everyone to be able to take a portion without sharing a tub. This would be the top priority for around 42% of consumers.
Quantity to portion out Check the net weight of the larger pack and its storage instructions for after opening. Also check that it’s available before planning your breakfasts around it. If we eat it regularly, I prefer to serve the amount we want by the spoonful, as long as we can use the pack after opening. The amount to portion out would be the top priority for around 33% of consumers.
Ingredients and label Compare the ingredients list, allergens and sugars in the nutritional information for each plain or flavoured variety. To add variety to breakfast, I want to know how a vanilla variety differs from a plain one before choosing. Around 25% of consumers would put ingredients first.

Things to watch out for

  • Assuming every four-pack contains the same amount of yoghurt

Carrefour’s four 110 g Danone pots don’t contain the same amount as the four 150 g Délisse pots listed by E.Leclerc. So the number of pots alone won’t tell you how many breakfasts a pack will cover.

Compare the weight of each pot and the total pack weight with the portions your household usually serves.

  • Assuming flavoured yoghurt is the same as plain

The ingredients list for Auchan’s vanilla Greek-style yoghurt includes sugar at 9.3%, as well as cream and starch. This applies to that particular product, not to every Greek-style yoghurt.

Read the label on each product to compare its ingredients, allergens and nutritional information.

  • Choosing a larger pack without planning how to use it after opening

As Anses points out, the use-by date printed on an unopened product no longer applies in the same way once it has been opened.

Before buying, check the manufacturer’s instructions for the storage temperature and how long the product can be kept after opening. Then choose an amount your household can use within those guidelines.

Any leftovers that can’t be eaten within those guidelines may end up being thrown away.

  • Confusing four pots with a two-litre pack

“Four pots” tells you the number of portions, not the volume. The products mentioned here are labelled by weight in grams, so a four-pack can’t be assumed to contain two litres.

If you need a specific volume, check the product name, type of packaging and net quantity shown on the label.
