Whether you're a parent looking for a creative (and clean!) activity for your child, a budding artist discovering a new medium, or a seasoned illustrator, choosing the right gouache paint can quickly become a daunting task. Between traditional tubes, solid sticks, and all-in-one kits, it's hard to know where to start.
As the Head of Product Recommendations at Joybuy, my role is to guide you. Our mission with this guide is to demystify the different types of gouache and present a curated selection to help you make the right choice for your projects and budget.
Before diving into our selection, here are the key points to consider to guide your choice.
The packaging is arguably the first criterion to consider, as it shapes the entire creative experience.
Gouache is primarily distinguished by its matte, opaque finish. Unlike watercolor, which plays with transparency, gouache completely covers the surface. This opacity allows you to layer light colors over dark backgrounds—a major advantage in illustration and graphic design for achieving perfectly uniform blocks of color.
For parents and educators alike, ease of cleanup is a non-negotiable criterion. A washable gouache is specially formulated to wash off skin effortlessly with a little soap and water. On textiles, it's always best to act quickly, but these special formulas make stain removal much easier compared to classic artist gouaches.

It's all a matter of opacity. Watercolor is transparent, allowing the light of the paper to filter through the pigments. Gouache paint, on the other hand, is opaque: its pigments completely cover the surface, which gives it that characteristic matte, velvety finish.
Yes, but with a few precautions. Gouache performs best on rigid surfaces like thick paper, cardboard, or wood. On a flexible canvas, a thick layer of gouache may crack if the canvas bends. To paint on canvas, apply it in thin layers or opt for a more rigid canvas board.
It all depends on the formula! A washable gouache, like the one in the Jar Melo kit, is designed to be cleaned very easily from skin and most smooth surfaces. However, be aware that "water-soluble" doesn't necessarily mean "fully washable on fabric." Our advice: always protect clothing and clean up spills immediately with soap and water.
