What should you check before buying?
When cooking in quantity for a gluten-free meal, first identify products that suit the menu, then work out how many cubes you’ll need. Check the type of stock and other ingredients on the specific variant you plan to buy.

Who this matters to |
| Gluten-free labelling |
Look for the words “gluten-free” and check the ingredients of the exact product. Carrefour France’s listing for Maggi Kub Or in a box of 32 cubes states that it contains wheat. |
If the whole meal needs to be gluten-free, I can’t choose a stock cube based on pack size alone. Around 36% of consumers put this check first. |
| Quantity and recommended amounts |
Compare the number of cubes with the preparation instructions. Jardin BiO étic recommends one cube per 0.5 L of water for its salt-free, gluten-free vegetable stock, sold in a box of 8 cubes. |
For a large pot, I want to know how many boxes to buy so I don’t run out of stock. Working out quantities is the top priority for around 29% of consumers. |
| Salt and other allergens |
Check the salt content, allergens and any warnings about traces separately. According to information from Carrefour France and Jardin BiO étic, its salt-free, gluten-free product contains celery and may contain traces of egg, milk, soya and mustard. |
If my guests have other dietary requirements, the gluten-free label alone doesn’t answer every question. Around 21% of consumers focus first on salt or other allergens. |
| Type of stock |
Choose a recipe to suit your dish, then check the ingredients and recommended amounts for that particular variant again. |
I’m looking for a base that suits the soup or sauce I’m planning, while also meeting the meal’s requirements. The type of stock comes first for around 14% of consumers. |

Frequently asked questions
What does “gluten-free” mean on a stock cube?
In the European Union, this claim is governed by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 828/2014: food sold to the final consumer must not contain more than 20 mg/kg of gluten. Check that the claim appears on the exact product, rather than assuming it from words such as “plant-based”, “organic” or “vegetable”.
Are plant-based stock cubes always gluten-free?
No. “Plant-based” doesn’t tell you on its own whether a product contains gluten. Carrefour France’s listing for Maggi Kub Or in a box of 32 cubes includes hydrolysed wheat protein in the ingredients.
How many cubes do I need for a large pot?
It depends on the volume you’re making and the recommended amount for the product you’ve bought. For its salt-free, gluten-free vegetable stock, Jardin BiO étic recommends one cube per 0.5 L of boiling water. Start with the number of litres you need, then work out how many boxes of 8 cubes to buy.
Is a gluten-free stock cube suitable for every other dietary restriction?
No. The gluten-free label doesn’t tell you about all other allergens. The Jardin BiO étic product listed by Carrefour France contains celery and may contain traces of egg, milk, soya and mustard. Check the packaging against your guests’ needs.
Can I rely on buying gluten-free stock cubes from Lidl for an event?
Check what your store has available before making it your only option. Lidl France says its gluten-free products are available as part of special buys and aren’t part of its permanent range.
